England Cricket 2016/17 - Bangladesh, India & West Indies (ODI's only)

Bangladesh haven't played a test before this for 18 months. This new side at home will be a match for any of the top test playing nations.
And I'm saying this is the first time B'desh performed well throughout a series while they previously had good performances sporadically (two innings out of four or one test in a series or coming close to a win in a test but losing to monumental innings like Inzamam in Multan, Ponting and Vettori in B'desh rather than coming close throughout series like they did vs Eng this time). Hence this test series can be called a beginning of their possible good run imo. Looks like we both agree?

B'desh tour NZ in Dec/Jan and play a one-off test for the first time in India some time in Feb. Not sure when they host a test series next - Ind, Pak, SA, Eng, Zim toured B'desh in last two years and they travel to NZ in couple of months. Maybe SL/WI/Aus will tour there next year?

That all rounder off spinner Bangladesh had a dodgy action mark. Mehedi and Mustafizur will ensure that Bangladesh will have a great bowling attack in future.

there are 6 or 7 equally rated 17-19 year old bowlers who will be given debut in the 18 months. A few of those will stick too.

Plus the appointment of Courtney Walsh will have a massive impact on the ability of fast paced bowlers.

True. It's looking rosey on the future player front for us.

Personally I'd like to see the bangers build separate sides for the 3 formats (this may have been detrimental to Mominuls progress but hopefully we'll see an increase in tests played).

Given the number of lefties in English squad, I really want to see Kuldeep Yadav given a go. He'll be deadly against them.

I think they will struggle away from home however will be a match for most teams at home.

I think England should bulk up the batting for the tests and just play the 5 bowlers rather than the six. I would go for:

Cook (c)
Hameed
Root
Duckett
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler (wk)
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Batty

It really is a toss up between Batty and Rashid (personally I would have preferred Leach but he's not in the sqaud). Rashid just bowls too many bad balls, if he can improve on his consistency, would pick him over Batty.

31 on debut for a test opener against India IN India is a bloody decent way to get going in international cricket.

7th 50 in 7 tests for Root vs India

It is Rajkot. I didn't read pitch report but that pitch is often like a road to bat on, at least on first couple of days. Not any judgement on England's new opener this mind, I have never seen him play. Just that this pitch is not as bad as those which were given to South Africans.

And his innings was a tad shaky tbf, but still, it's better than I hoped for score-wise.

Good to see Hameed open although makes the decision not to play him against Bangladesh a poor one.

So we prepare square turners against Aus, SA and NZ. England, who are probably better than any of them and just to lost to fecking Bangladesh, turn up and we make flat wickets? Makes sense.

I share your confusion.

Don't think that should have been given as out.

If he's just throwing the ball in the air in celebration why does he try to catch it again?

And I don't know why they went to the third umpire.

England 311/4 overnight with Moeen 99* and on strike first ball tomorrow! I think that has to be considered a very good day for England.

I guess the thinking is maybe that a rank turner makes it a bit of a lottery?

Like in the SA series someone as shit as Dean Elgar looked a threat whereas only your spinners are good enough to take wickets on a road.

Don't think we'll take 20 wickets if the pitch is flat enough for us to score upwards of 400+

Our bowlers are crap. The only reason Ashwin has amassed a feck load of wickets is down to the wickets he's bowled on which have been extremely bowler friendly.

We're also only playing 5 batsmen so 20 wickets might not be that big a stretch.

I feel every time we go to India the talk is suggesting we have no chance. Then India hugely underwhelm. I know it's very early but it's looking a bit like that.

We'll lose this one and start preparing turners.

1) England have better spinners than any of Aus, SA, NZ. Nobody as good as Swann but decent to good.
2) The "fecking Bangladesh" are very strong at home and would have beaten Aus, SA or NZ on current state of teams so England's 1-1 draw wasn't bad. If India prepare a rank turner vs Bangladesh for the one-off test early next year, lose the toss and they will be in for a surprise too even if test is at home.
3) Given Indian batsmen also struggled against any random spin bowler in test, England would have stood chance and it would have all come down to toss.
4) It is 5 test series. Preparing 3 day rank turner pitches would have meant absolutely no interest in last 2 tests.

Very true. Many people don't give credit to the progress Bangladesh have made in recent years, the fact England drew 1-1 with the bangers isn't an indication of Bangladesh's rise but rather that England did very very well.

1. Highly debatable. They're probably at the same level at best.
2. They're really not and given they've literally never even got to close to beating any of the teams you mentioned so the idea that they 'would' have beaten them is nonsense.
3. We have struggled against spin bowling for a long long time. It's nothing new. NZ, Aus, SA all troubled us with their spin options. But it gives us a chance to win games as well as has been proven over the last year or so.
4. Who cares? Not that we'd win the the first 3 tests anyway

1) They are not. SA and Aus spinners are worse than England's. NZ with Santner can be good with some more exp.
2) Recent years and home the keywords. Bangladesh in recent years at home have not played all the big teams. India drew their last year. SA drew 2 test series 0-0 and since then Bangladesh have found new spinner and strengthened in bowling in pace too. Australia are not touring there currently but given how Australians bat vs spinners, as they showed in Sri Lanka, it is not hard to imagine them losing. NZ toured few years back when Bangladesh weren't as good but still couldn't win test series and got whitewashed in ODIs iirc.
3) They will have it at some venue down the line if needed.
4) BCCI does.

1. Both of NZ spinners were very good, Santner and Sodhi. Tahir as well for SA.
2. Not very key. The series' were drawn because of rain.
3. It is needed. We do shit on batting pitches.

Tahir hasn't been selected for Australia series and a new player got the nod. Sodhi too is hardly good already. Rashid has lot better control in leg spinner category than both.
Yes rain played part but that series, especially with Mustafizur debut performance showed the improvement and ability Bangladesh have. Now they have got a talented spinner added. Bangladesh do have mental block though where they screw up from good positions but irrespective of that, they have developed into very strong home side. Other than that, NZ previously did no good and even with new spinners if they tour again, won't find easy at all. Australia are too bad vs spin to put any money on them currently. In tests Bangla haven't seen many victories with teams either refusing to tour or having short series but in next couple of years, I am expecting them to get test wins at home.

Santner's the only decent one of that list. I do think Nathan Lyon is miles better than Mooen mind.

It was harder not to take wickets on the pitches he got to bowl on

Hoping this pitch cracks up and deteriorates heavily as the game goes on.
