England Cricket 2016/17 - Bangladesh, India & West Indies (ODI's only)

1st session tomorrow will be vital. If we can come out of that relatively unscathed then I think we will have done well.

Haven't watched a ball so I could be wrong but a load of pundits were predicting ball to turn square in the first 3 tests as well but it never really happened.
It's not really a prediction, this time. It's happening.

Ah. In that case I'd say England have a pretty good score already. Add another 80-100 tomorrow (which they should given the batting left) and they're in a strong position.

Another thing pundits have got wrong is the deterioration of the pitch over the course of the match. Does this look like it will hold up?

I don't think a ton of turn is something the Indian batsmen will necessarily fear - a ton of turn with bounce and inconsistent bounce at that...will worry them a lot more than sheer turn.

Well done Jennings. Good to see that England have unearthed another great South African prospect. ;) The future of England's top order suddenly looks far more brighter!
England now really do have the makings of a future great test side, especially on more bouncier quicker wickets than those on the sub continent.

Still need to add 150 for me. If the big spin is happening, then I'm more fearful of our 2nd innings than confident in our ability to bowl out India in theirs, as they've the much better spin options for the conditions.

Even at 450, I'd say the match is still anyones.

Still, the kid Jennings, though  Awesomely done. To show that composure after being dropped on 0 is amazing for a debutant, nevermind a teenager. Perhaps in a few years time he & Hameed will be opening together... Say Cook retires in 5 years time, they'll both be 24.

Good read on the kid.

Jennings is already 24

Why did I think he was 19? My bad, but still.

Hameed is 19

Yeah, must be that. Reading two articles back to back confused me or something :D

But still, to make your debut in India and perform as well as they've done so far is, at the very least, encouraging.

Decent recovery after losing the early wickets. Scoring at a decent rate, and 420-450 is looking likely.

It might be enough, but it's all gonna come down to our 2nd innings with the bat.

Cook missed a trick with the 4 seamers selection. Should have stuck with 3 and 3.

Rahul's technique looks awful.

Looks a completely different player to the one that debuted in Australia.

Why is rahane dropped anyway? We don't really need Rahul right now. Patel was fine.

Rahane is injured. Rahul will likely grow out of this phase soon enough like Vijay did a while back. He's the best bet as an opener as things stand. Patel is fine at #6. You can't have your keeper opening the batting.

Also, I wonder what we do in between games. So many players getting injured in the last 12 months. No continuity whatsoever.

Vijay played like an idiot for most of the morning. Nair looks like a fish out of water. Doesn't like he'll last too long if he keeps this up.

Vijay didn't want to play after he got his century. Either he was tired or doesn't give a crap.

Pretty much.

India have batted terrifically all series with one or two batsmen short I felt. Maybe today's the day it catches up.

Karun, Parthiv, Ashwin at 5, 6, 7 is.. heavily reliant on top order performances.

Need to get 100 more here to be in the game.

I think with Kohli still there and Ashwin Jayant and Jadeja still to come, a lead is quite possible.

Parthiv's thinking he went to the press conference and mouthed off a day too early..

Karun got out already. After Vijay's wicket Rashid has bowled well. That's what happens when you throw your wicket like that.

@zing to be fair Ashwin has bailed us out more than once in this series. He's a good batsman. Top order has failed too much and needs to be fixed. You've got to get at least 100 runs before losing your first wicket. The other problem with this team is over reliance on Kohli.

I think Ashwin is an excellent batsman but it doesn't make tactical sense to stick your best bowler at #6/#7 and ask him to make runs every game.

Kallis was a good bowler, but SA never went into games expecting him to take wickets to get results. That is how it should be with Ashwin.

Disagree with reliance on Kohli.. think we've had runs from everywhere all over the world -- Rahane, Pujara, Vijay all made important contributions about same as Kohli. Pujara's made 385 including this innings and Kohli 485(and counting) this series. Not a massive difference. Batting order is reliant on 2 or 3 and that's the problem with fronting up with 4 batsmen and a bit.

Has Ashwin bailed us out or is it time time to consider him a proper all rounder who's expected to contribute with the bat? I'd like to see him in Australia but right now I don't see why he shouldn't play as an all rounder. He's has the technique and the temperament to do it and would he really be any worse than Rohit?

Top shot..

Kohli can decide this game. This is the toughest situation I've seen him play in, I think.

So far they have just one fifty stand among openers. Pujara and Kohli are under too much pressure to score. It's a good thing these guys can handle it but before and after those two others need to step up.

1-2 and 5-6 batsmen aren't performing well enough.

Oh dear.

Only positive is I have tickets for all 5 days of the Chennai test..

Game still far from decided of course.

Kohli looks like he has lost his concentration here. Need to get 350 at least here
