Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

when you get enough runes for a level up and then die, then again to some bs and lose them all..

I had 90k and was running back to a grace got killed, respawned and accidentally rode my horse off a cliff. Nearly punched the monitor.

Why are you psychopaths running around with so many runes? As soon as I get enough for an upgrade, they're getting spent. Although to be fair, I did learn the hard way from previous From games.

This is the way. And use rune stones if you're close!

I didn't like this game on my first quick play through as a samurai. Everything was so difficult and I struggled to beat even that camp of men right at the start. Was over it. Decided to give it a fresh go with a vagabond character for the bigger shield, and since I knew where the first few things were (horse, bell, etc), I'm enjoying it a bit more, but I rarely try to fight anything big (only really beaten one of those Giants with swords in the first area which actually felt good), right now I'm just farming smaller characters and leveling up (mainly vigor to 20 which helps me last longer, I'll see what to increase going forward). Will this cause me issues going forward as I haven't really played the game as intended (challenging myself vs strong opponents)?

Na what you're doing sounds pretty normal. Just keep exploring. No harm in taking on big fights and dying though. If something's too hard, go explore somewhere else and come back later. The area south of the map is a little easier.

For people who have completed the game, how do you rate it? As a massive fan of the soulsborne series, I think I would give it an 8 or 8.5/10. The open world feels empty in the sense that there is nothing but enemies and bosses. It becomes very predictable. Bosses arent as good or memorable as in Bloodborne or DS3, and many of the bosses are just copies of each other. and the combat isn't better. It's still a good game. With a staggering amount of areas. I feel the graphics could have been better on ps5, but i'm not complaining. As someone else said this basically open world ds2. I feel the difficulty of a lot of the bosses, especially late and end game just takes the piss and aren't fair. I feel open world games get overrated in general including BOTW/GTA etc. but perhaps that's because i'm not a kid or a teenager anymore, so my sense of immersion is less. Still it's a impressive effort from From Software, but I'm not going open world managed to improve the formula. If they are doing it again, they are going to have to throw in some more story and more npc's ala The Witcher to make the world interesting apart from non stop figthing with enemies and bosses. Also I never used about 99% of the items I picked up.

I haven't finished the game yet but I much prefer the specific explorable areas like storm veil or the academy to the open world exploration. I got that feeling almost immediately playing as well.

One of the best things about from games is their level design, and it still shines here, you just have to go through 5 to 10 hours of open world and mini dungeons before you get to the levels now.
Having said that I am really enjoying the game. Some of the areas are brilliant.

Bit random but I really loved the area climbing the cliff up to the plateau through the mines and on the cliff face.

The music and atmosphere were great.

The lumaria of the lakes boss in the library was memorable because of how it made me feel as well, if not the actual fight.

I'm tempted, but I've never played a From game before... The difficulty has always put me off. Would this be a good starter?

Depends how open you are to dying over and over.

It's beatable so far for me and I'm terrible, and much more forgiving in terms of levelling content than previous games.

If you can't take not winning first time in boss fights or dying to trash fights its not for you.

I can take the former (if they're like the God of War Valkyrie battles for example) , but I fear I'm too much of a whingy bitch for the latter :nervous:

It's funny though that your badass character, who is killing all these powerful and twisted monsterous enemies and is a slayer of dragons, will still die to some dogs if they catch you off guard

I think so because, although this is very difficult at times (like REALLY difficult) you're no longer tied to a specific area as in dark souls, and if you're finding things too tough you simply go somewhere else, level up and return later. Coming back later when your armed to the teeth and leveled up to an absurd advantage is quite satisfying; kind of like "I used to be scared of you and now you're an insect to me' :D

You’ll die a lot but if you stick with it eventually your attitude when you die will (mostly) change from ‘this is bullshit’ to ‘I fecked up’and that’s when the series clicks.

There’s that, and the rush you get from finally beating a boss you’ve been struggling on which is a hell of a feeling.

The From series isn’t hard really, they just don’t go out of their way to make things easy like most games.

I found an amazing rune farming spot. Just murder the group of weirdo women in Windmill village. 4000 runes in 30 seconds over and over and over.

I didn't even bother with them! I just beat the boss because I wanted the weapon.

That twin blade is amazing with blood slash on it.

The bird that runs off the cliff after you hit it with one arrow farming spot is the one you want if you're a scrub like me.

11k souls every 20 seconds.

Interesting, where's this?

I agree with the part about open world not being a clear improvement. It's different, it makes the world feel vast but I think you also lose some of the magic of the way FromSoftware so cleverly integrated areas within Dark Souls. The labyrinth quality had a sense of magic that made you feel smart. Every new area had an ability to inspire awe.

Somehow I find that having that extra freedom actually takes away from my sense of adventure even though in theory it's supposed to increase it. I guess they've done it to take their games into a new era on more powerful hardware. It's certainly a success but I definitely would not say that this is their best game.

The lore is also not of the quality of previous games but that might just be my preference.

It's certainly a good foray into the new style, no doubt about that, and it's a good technical achievement. But I do miss a "normal" Dark Souls experience.

Go for it.

The thing about these games is if you're struggling, you could always just use a broken build/weapon that trivialises the game for you. This game has more ways to make it easier than other souls game, you also have the option to use various "summons" that makes most boss fights a doozie.

New game + should be fun think I’ve wasted enough time here.

Finished the game last night, great game dungeons improve the more you go on even the optional ones. The locations near the end of the game are a different level to anything previous throughout.

Mimic Tear is the most broken thing in the game and makes every boss a walk over so avoid if your looking for a big challenge

I got to a place called Altus last night, have to say I'm a bit directionless at the moment after swerving Radahn for the time being... I'm almost level 70, wondering if I'm meant to be there.

I am finding I much prefer the dungeons and castles etc to the open world but it has still been interesting enough.

Git gud nubs

Any % looks like a pretty boring category. Basically 15 minutes of running followed by a boss rush, some of which are glitched/AI broken.

I think the All Remembrances (ie all the big bosses) category is going to the the most interesting one. No records yet, but Elijjaz has it down in about 2 1/2 hours.

I've seen people planning 100% runs on Twitch ie every item, mini boss, quest, ending, etc. Feck that.

I think you need to experience their previous titles, I know I should have.

And I'm not going to lie, I fecking loathed this in the end.

Im in two minds on this - if you get stuck on a boss, there's way more places to go than the other games while you level up. So unlike, say, Bloodborne, where loads of people give up after the first mandatory boss, it isn't all or nothing. You could just run around the open areas for probably 10 or 20 hours without tackling a boss, checking out the views and finding equipment.

However the game doesn't actually have much to do apart from building up your character to fight the many bosses, so you're committed to tackling them eventually, and I think the boss battles are more BS than other From games. More irritating unavoidable deaths, lots of spammy combos and AOEs, plus the new randomness element they've introduced add up to bosses I've found more frustrating than other games, even though they're not harder overall.

Nah, this is easily the most accessible of the games so far. Bloodborne for example, arguably the hardest part of the game is trying to get through the first area, it's a much more difficult hurdle to get over to get into the game.

You're supposed to do Caelid first I think. Level 70 should be ok for Radahn btw, I was around that level when I beat him.

I'll have another pop at him tonight. I've switched my Twinblade to the Uchigatana so looking to get that to a decent level and will try using that against him.

I am level 90 and am at the point where you are looking for the eternal city.

Did a lot of grinding!

My arcane turtle build is coming together.

If you want to have an easier time of him ...

He's weak to scarlet rot. If you have the faith, there's an incantation called rotten breath, if you apply it on him twice he's dead. Just need to focus on dodging him at that point.

I may resort to that if he carries on smashing me but I do try to stay away from shitbag tactics like this  although this boss seems unfairly designed, you can't get out of the way a lot of the time!

Nah, its not really a cheese tactic, lore wise its a weakness of his, so it makes sense to use it.
