Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

I have it comfortably ahead of the DS trilogy, and behind BB. Never played Sekiro.

Sekiro is phenomenal. Different gameplay to DS, but I highly recommend it.

But yeah, I agree with your ranking there. BB is still one of the best games ever. But Elden Ring is much, much better than any of the Souls

Back in the day we had to import from America if we wanted our souls games. Funny to see how massive it got after Sony told them their game was shit

Defeated Godrick, about 4th try. Didn’t find him easy at all but it’s done.

Now considering whether it’s better to go back and tackle some of the side bosses or keep moving forwards.

Im feeling a bit limited without points in Arcane or faith. Seems almost all weapons need some of it at least...

Them’s fightin’ words. I shall not abide DS1 being treated with such opprobrium.

I actually think I'm done with it already. It's boring, archaic and a backwards step. I know people will love it, and that's cool, but for me it's blatant for what it is and that's just not where I'm finding enjoyment I guess.

I don't mind that it's pandered to the open world crowd, I was even looking forward to that and yet it's added nothing to the genre, and that's both creatively and in the actual world. The saddest part is it's dragged the actual gameplay backwards, the bosses especially. Nope it's not for me, it's a reskin of 2 with tacked on features.

I don't mind the kind of people who love open worlds games thinking it's amazing. What makes me actually laugh is the souls crowd who shit on 2, yet somehow love this game that has ALL the same problems and yet somehow it's 10/10! Yeah right

Wow, harsh words.

maybe it’s cause I haven’t played the Souls games but I still love it despite all its flaws and the open world being a bit of a bore at times. Bloodborne was much more fun andIt sounds like I’ll prefer Sekiro too when I get to it but I do still can’t stop playing it.

it’s so overrated though, 10/10 my hole.

Yeah, Sony fecked up there. Made up for it with Bloodborne though.

It's a reskin of DS2.

I could be a lot harsher mate, I really could. I could point out the intricacies of the locking, collision, staggering, poise, i-roll systems...all the shit that made the games fun and yet 2 gets shit on for changing. Yet in this it's magically ok, just because it's open world. Not to mention the lack of cohesion with bosses, the infinite stamina/poise and aimbot mechanics that 2 gets derided for. It's all in here. This game is a massive backwards step for the type of game it is. I'm actually bored of it already, even the dungeons that are supposed to be "souls" levels are just lacklustre without any real motivation nor interesting fights to make them rewarding.

The reviews were clearly paid for and crib-sheeted. No one in any right mind compares this to BOTW as an open world, and nobody who plays and loves the souls game so much could miss the blatantly obvious problems with what they've done. I mean, even half the animations are from 2 and not 3/BB

I fecked up by giving my PS4 to my brother after I upgraded by PC years ago so I didn't get to play that one.

Enjoyed the youtube lore videos a lot though!

It's a great game and far superior to this.

Maybe they'll wake up, drop this pandering to the OW crowd nonsense, and give us a remastered BB whilst doing BB2! Doubtful now everyone is creaming over this though :(

I do agree with the reviews regarding the combat though. It is its own thing, while of course borrowing a bit from Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Got a little bit of Sekiro in there as well, being able to jump attack. Feels good though

As someone who only saw the lore/story it seemed pretty self contained

I get what you are saying about this game, they do seem to be cheesing the difficulty at times with multiple enemies or non-stop aggression etc. rather than creating more interesting fights.

I am actually enjoying having more area to explore and take my time with the world rather than being funnelled through more linier paths like in Demon's & Dark Souls. That said, some of the mini- dungeons are almost Oblivion level for being copy / pasted.

Its a fun game, seems to have a lot of build diversity and it scratches the right itches. I'm still early on but if feels like an 8.5 to 9 out of 10.

Jump attacking is very satisfying when you time it right.

In what world is the combat "it's own thing"?

It's DS 2 with jumping, that's literally it. The weapons being mostly pointless apart from faith/bleed, the magic being the same kind of thing and worst, the collision on everything being back to simple boxes with extended (invisible) weapon hits from the enemies. Even the i-roll system is the same.

It's the same jacking the enemies with the poise/stamina, the same terrible targetting, the same aimbot, the same tactics of big weapon or range otherwise it's tedious, it's literally the exact same combat loop. BB changed it up, DS3 used a mixture and Sekiro did a completely different take. ER is basically 2 with jump attacks and even then, I would prefer the kick back and that jump thing is just cheese.

Anyway that's enough from me. I'm really glad people like it and all that, I was really looking forward to it and want to love it myself. But I can't look past what it actually is and for me, ultimately, it's just so very boring. And that's the worst bit, I'm bored of it already :(

Is there not a danger that you're at a stage with gaming where you're just a bit too judgmental? Playing devil's advocate here, but you seem like your expectations for games are so high that you almost set them up to disappoint you. Almost as if your biggest gripe isn't the game but rather the review scores. If it had got 8/10 across the board then you'd possibly like it more.

If I went off reviews you might have a point. The part about paid for reviews has always been a gripe of mine and I've always spoke about that and said that's exactly why you don't do that.

But I love the souls games and play them all including all the knock-offs. And keeping that in mind if you re-read my posts and what I've said, it's about this one has gone backwards for the actual gameplay. Besides I've listed a number of issues and could list more. If I was just being dismissive for the sake of it then there would be logical answers to those points, no?

No, what you are seeing is disappointment and sadness in this game and what it is. Again I get why people on here, for example, are enjoying it and all that and I'm jealous of that. But for me, it's just not that great a game in terms of what it is and tries to do. What it's seemingly gained in the massive open world, it's lost in focus and the essence of what I love about these games.

And that's fine, just as it's fine to feel the opposite.

Going back to Stormveil Castle at level 50 and going in the front gate and just mercilessly slaughtering the entire castle makes me feel like Anakin butchering the younglings

I think Dark Souls 1 and BB might still take the top spots for me but 40 hours in and i'm still really enjoying this. Said it before but the world just feels so unpredictable. I've been despising open world games for a while now but this one just seems a lot more pure and made with love rather than soulless fetch quests and pointless time wasting missions. Everything just feels streamlined into pure exploration which is refreshing, although maybe some people might find that empty and threadbare like some people found Shadow of the Colossus.

So far it's a 9 out 10 for me. The button mapping is horrible though in my opinion and some of the hit boxes of the bosses are ridiculous (although i'm thinking my pad might be faulty/unresponsive).

The single greatest argument against level scaling.

See, now I get this. And I do feel the same about the world in that way.

I just have no idea why they didn't just go with the more fluid combat of DS3/BB and made a lot less more focused boss fights. It would have been perfect then.

The person that decided L3 makes you jump of your horse should be mauled by that bear that shagged Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant.

Its overrated, but its not DS2 levels of bad tbh. For starters it doesn't have that godawful adaptability system they thankfully binned from DS3 onwards. They've definitely taken a leaf out of DS2 with the bullshit cheap difficulty mechanics though, whoever thought it was a good idea to make bosses essentially two original bosses with a half a dozen minions in a small room with an unforgiving camera needs a slapping. The catacombs are pretty shit in general too.

I am disappointed, but I still can't shake off wanting to play it all the time, largely owing to the combat system. But I hold that down to its novelty, if I played DS3 again I'll probably feel easier shelfing this.

did anyone trade with the thief or just outright kill him? I was trying to play as a noble 'good' character but he did steal it and was pretty mean towards me so...it's a tough old world. Hoping it doesn't have any negative consequences

I killed the fecker too, he only asks for 1000 runes but it was the principle of it  . I don't think it matters regardless, the ball bearing thing you loot off of him you can just hand over to the creepy twins at roundtable hold and then you'll have access to his shop.

Finally got the Meteorite Staff and also found the Rock Sling spell. Starting to do a little damage now. Although Godrick just fecked me up

Picked this up and played a couple of hours this evening. Not a clue what is going on or what stats help me etc, but its enjoyable enough so far. Do people just grind the soldiers etc to level up? I feel incredibly underpowered tackling most enemies so far, let alone bosses.

Really? Double tree sentinel? :(
I unashamedly cheesed them because feck that.

If you go past the door behind them, there's a grace. From there, you can pull them separately - they eventually reset if they come too far inside but their health doesn't regenerate.

Doing this as we speak

I have mixed feelings…I’ve played for 25 hours and I love Dark Souls, so it’s familiar and I like playing it but there are so many things wrong with it.

The bosses have been a big disappointment and the mooted open world is just boring with essentially the same hub worlds of DS1 but a 5 min ride with nothing in between each one.
