E3 2011

That new Nintendo system looks great, might be the first system ever that I will get on the release day. Anyway, have they announced when approximately it will be out?

A year from now xbox360 and ps3 could be even cheaper and this new Wii will cost a fair bit of money.
What this gen proved is graphics and gimmicks are nice but the most important thing is the price. Wii and DS won because they were cheap, above all else.

Sony and Microsoft should just lower prices, sit and watch the new nintendo console struggle.

When will you people learn that arguing with Weaste over anything that isn't Sony is pointless? He is like a child repeating the same nonsense (yeah, Sony design everything first don't ya know?). Even after only seeing pictures of the new machine with no details it was turd and couldn't possibly have any power...gonna be expensive...yap yap yap waaaaah.

In reality a new generation of machine should always be of interest to gamers! What does it matter which machine you get if you enjoy the games on it? The pathetic fanboy nonsense that goes on over systems you have feck all to do with, just spend your hard earned money on, is a complete waste of time.

As for the WiiU (shocking name btw) it could go either way, but at least once again it's something that tries to be different.

A) The controller is way too big and too expensive. It also seems that you'll only ever be able to connect 1 to the console.

B) It is basically remote play and will be laggy when the screen is used on its own - you can't get around that. It's not doing anything new or innovative, it's simply doing the same as last time - making it a standard feature.

C) The size of the console suggests that there is little active cooling in there, meaning that it's again highly underpowered to what it could be. Instead of relying on a process shrink to get the costs down over time and thus change the design, they are sticking with it. This means that the console is unlikely to have a life of more than 6 years.

D) Online is likely to be weak.

E) It's a 3rd party portbox.

I see no compelling reason why a 360 or PS3 owner would have any interest in moving to this other than to play Nintendo 1st party games, and I also see no reason why a significant number of the Wii userbase would move to this either.

You'll come up with a guesswork point list about anything that doesn't have sony written on the front. I honestly don't understand why, since you often make good points - even if your bias often clouds your judgement.

Oh and it always amusrd me whem you bang on about sony doing move first

See, you doing your usual. The fact remains that Sony were actively playing with motion controls when Nintendo were still selling the N64. They have been doing what this new controller does since 2005. The only difference is that they were never confident enough with either to make them standard features, and I don't think they still are.

As for 360, I've never called it a turd other than for its reliability and the fact that its CPU is a turd, but so is the PPE in Cell - PPEs are turds of processors.

It's you that's the fanboy because you can't accept basic facts, and when your beloved machines or parts of them are called turds for factual reasons you get upset about it.

We don't have any confirmation of the hardware specs other than AMD is the GPU supplier, and IBM is the CPU supplier (they quote it's on 45nm and has EDRAM). So, it doesn't take a clairvoyant to guess that the GPU is likely to be around 4x more capable than Xenos, and that the CPU is a POWER7 derivative probably clocked around 2Ghz or less - simply due to the size of the box and the cooling required. It's 2008 stuff released in 2012. They are doing it again!

Oh and it always amusrd me whem you bang on about sony doing move first

Well, it's true, the facts are there in front of your very eyes, you simply refuse to accept them.

3rd party portbox  Funny that since you always slag nintendo off for being weak in that area. Funny that.

Wii wasn't capable of taking PC/XB360/PS3 ports, this thing will be. However, it's going up against a HD console install base of over 100m units and growing, consoles that have established gaming networks. Nobody in their right mind is going to make this thing the lead development SKU.

You actually have no idea if Sony were doing it before nintendo! Stop pretending like you do.

I know that Richard Marks was working on it since 2000, and made a presentation on it at SIGGRAPH around 2001. I've even provided you with a video.

Oh and if that is the case, sony must be shit and the race to get things to the market then

They are shit in exploiting the technology that they have, that's undeniable.

As for the WiiU (shocking name btw)

This is another thing that I don't understand, they even use the same logo and typeface. Unless they kill the Wii dead on the day of launch, it's going to do nothing but confuse people. The 3DS is doing the same, many people simply think that it's a revision, not a new system. You'll get people buying Wii U games and trying to run them on a Wii.

Well as much as I'd love to play this game right now weastie, I'm busy. In the meantime why don't you tell us all yet again with facts and figures about how the Ps3 and Cell are superior to everything else, despite not even being able to outdo the shit xbox360 or a mid level pc

But then when I sit down later to play my ps3, I won't be worrying about any of that. I play games on it, as it's primarily designed to do.

The trouble is that you are playing the game, because you know the answers to the above, and you also know that what you've said is totally misleading in a great many ways.

This is what lumbered on my mind too.

It's a shocking move by the marketing department, and the fact that accessories and peripheries are cross-compatible for both platforms doesn't ease the confusion either.

Says the man who tries to go all technical when he's losing a point, because you know full well this isn't a technology forum and only a few of us understand? But nice one on suckering me back in

Oh and going by your definitions, surely the ps3 has been a 'port box' for most of it's life?

Nobody said any different, it's not the case now however, and for good reason.

You know very well what you are doing, and how to twist things, it's the troll's key tool in his toolbox and you've got a big toolbox, I didn't suck you anywhere, you were hovering over the thread repeatedly pressing F5.

 you crack me up. Still you do realise this will now go on to sell shitloads based purely on the fact that you go through all this crap when a non sony machine is announced, only to be a reverse jinx!

But yeah, it'll never work. Well not until Sony realise they are behind the curve again and rip it off ;)

Did you see Skyrim? Oblivion had me hooked but this....THIS! Game of the year material surely?

Oh and I'm getting a Wii. Kirby is going back to it's roots!

GOTY will be between 3 games imo:

- Battlefield 3
- Skyrim
- Uncharted 3

These are the only games i'm going to buy this year, nothing else has looked overly good imo.

I'm back to playing Oblivion right now and it's unputdownable. I've spent 136 hours playing it and have only discovered 1/3 of the locations. It's more massive than Man City.

What fecking marketing genius decided that Wii U was a good idea? I'm doing fecking intro to marketing and can see that it's a shit idea. Playstation 1, 2 and 3. Clear concept of newer console. Xbox, Xbox 360. Clear concept of new console.

fecking Wii U. Great, until mummy and daddies go to the store and go, oh, I could buy that super expensive Wii U for $600 and only get one of the $150 controllers with it, or buy that cheap normal Wii for $200....

Idiots, fecking idiots!

What this gen proved is graphics and gimmicks are nice but the most important thing is the price. Wii and DS won because they were cheap, above all else.

Is that even true though? I remember them being expensive...

Somewhat fixed...

See, there you go again, saying things that are not factually correct.

Anyway, the controller is bigger than the console. There is no way that you are going to get up to date modern hardware @ 45nm in that box!

'kinnel that controller looks massive, didn't look that massive yesterday...

I think the thing I find puzzling Weaste is that you are predicting already that it is doomed to fail and simply will not work right and will be too dear.

I know you are a smart fellow. But surely all the tech nerds and marketing chaps who work for Nintendo have looked into all possible obstacles?

they need to rename it, people are going to think the Wii U is a new controller for the Wii a bit like how the Plus add on for the remotes was

I've not said that it's destined to fail, that's an unknown. I'm calling it a turd for several reasons.

The first of those reasons is that by looking at the size of the box, I can't see that it will be that much more powerful than the current two HD consoles available that have a user base of over 100m. Also, we have seen from this generation, 3rd party exclusives basically no longer exist. So, unless you want the Nintendo 1st party stuff, which the COD crowd couldn't care less about, there is not going to be any compelling reason for them to go for this, as it will be running the same games as the XB60 and the PS3 that they already own. A major reason that many don't move from XB360 to PS3 or vice-versa is that by doing so, they are losing their friends off the network, and dumping their entire game collections in the bin. It's why the likes of Biscuit has 7 XB360s for example, because every time they break, he has to get a new one, because the software he has, and the achievements he has are probably worth more than the 7 consoles themselves.

The second reason is all of those people that got on the Wii bandwagon for what it did. If granny is happy with her Wii Sports bowling and her Wii Fit balance board, why on earth would granny want to spunk christ knows how much cash on this? She won't, she'll carry on using her Wii and carry on using her DS in bed to play brain training before going to sleep. These people were never interested in HD graphics and dual analogue controllers in the first place, and I'm quite sure that they still won't be interested in them now.

The thing is also going to cost a fortune.

Got to say I'm with Weaste on this one. Can't see the Wii U being a success. That said, I couldn't with the previous Wii, so perhaps once again Nintendo will find a new market with this. Doubt it mind.

Fair points weaste... must admit, they surprised me. Would I go out and buy it though? I already have a Pc/PS3/Xbox so no, I doubt it...

That looks retarded.

Its pretty clever actually.

I think its a novel idea, split screen gaming suddenly becomes more enjoyable because you can see whats going on a little better as your corner of the screen is only displayed on your controller. Hence you'd be looking at your controller rather than the tv.

Its one of those ideas that you'll need to play before you 'get it'.

They have ballsed up though. They should have made the controller a better version of the 3ds. So it becomes a controller for the new wii but also a seperate gaming platform.

Well that's the theory, but in practice I don't see how you would stream video between 2+ screens aswell as your tv (wirelessly I might add) with no lag?

I personally think they will have lots of tricks up their sleeves when it comes to retaining that "granny" crowd. Most casual gamers are tired of Wii Sports and are open to something different. The dual and touch screen technology can open up loads of interesting avenues with regards to casual gaming. At the end of the day its something new, just like with the Wii, which the granny crowd will be eager to try out. Did you see those demos? Most of them would make a great mini game collections. That's the casual Wii audience taken care of.

Capturing Sony or Microsoft users will be the hard part, something I feel is next to impossible. Same way Sony isn't going to get many Microsoft users to switch over. What Nintendo should worry about is retaining those hardcore gamers who went with the Wii and ended up terribly disappointed. Third party support and HD gaming will do that. If done right, the unique controller will make sure third party games offer something different when compared to the other console versions.

No point talking price at this stage since its all speculation.

I don't see what else could Nintendo have done?

I've not looked at it much yet, but the power thing gets me. The machine isn't focused enough to aim for the flashy graphics gamers. Weaste and I often agree that the next generation doesn't need a huge graphics leap, but more to be able to handle 1080p at constant 60fps and handle everything. However even in this machine can, it won't be enough for most.

As for the controller, yes it looks likely to be expensive, but until I've seen it and used it, I won't be writing it off like too many appear to be doing.

That name though

I don't see the need of capturing Sony and MS gamers. Nintendo has a massive player base and as long as they keep mixing simplicity with new content they will be on top of the casual gaming scene for years to come.
