Downing to Liverpool?

Anderson has good pace, good technique and a nice passing range but has always struck me as suffering from a mild case of the Babels. Ie, he lacks semblance of a proper footballing brain. Which is a bit criminal for a central midfielder.

Which is complete rubbish. You've seen very little of Anderson.

I remember Anderson's first season with us, very well of course. I remember he came up against both Cesc and Gerrard in the respective matches against Arsenal and Liverpool, and he was more than a match for both of them.
You don't remember very well at all. Against Arsenal he had an OK 30 mins playing very deep with Hargreaves, then he ran out of steam after 60 mins and was hauled off. You lost the game with Fabregas making the winner for Nasri. Against Liverpool Gerrard played behind the striker not in midfield and wasn't in the same space as Anderson. ManUmythmaking at its best.

Isn't it often a criticism of Anderson that he starts feeling it after an hour or so?

That was a common criticism and one that was also picked up on by the United players too but he didn't seem to struggle with that last season.

You under rate his performances in those games as much as some on here over rate them Pete. Particularly the performance against Liverpool. Whilst he and Gerrard were not in direct competition positionally they had quite a few 50:50s and tustles. Anderson won some of them with sliding tackles and body strength which got the crowd on their feet. Hence the myth.

We didn't lose, it finished 2-2 in that game Anderson-Hargreaves played.

I rememeber Anderson going on a run that ended up in nothing.

coming out the best in 50:50 tussels is not evidence of a good performance.

Vs Arsenal in 07/08 I remember Fabregas barely touching him and Anderson rolling around on the floor.

Our fans overrate his performance in those games and in the long run it hasn't helped with the expectations of the lad.

So do I. In fact I think it was Gerrard that stopped him with a slide tackle.

I know. I never suggested that it was....

In Anderson's first season, we didn't lose a league game to Arsenal. At the Emirates, it was 2-2 and at Old Trafford it was 2-1.

It seems you're the one who doesn't remember very well.

Anyway, onto Downing. He'll give them something down the wings as they haven't had much there recently. He's a good buy, nothing more.

good singing, decent left foot, price a bit inflated but still, they have a better option on the wings for next season.

Riverpoor!!!!!:lol::lol::lol:

He's not a bad player at all, he's a good winger and Liverpool desperately need wingers, but whilst he can 'play' in some of the positions you've mentioned, he's pretty ineffective in them....
That is just it. He isn't inefftcive in those positions. That is a typical cafe myth that keeps gathering steam. Last season he and Young were Villa's best players regardless of what role they played for the team. That doesn't come about by being ineffective.

He is not so one footed. He is similar to Giggs in that respect. And last season he was pretty good for Villa as a central midfielder.

He´s pretty versatile - played wide right, wide left and through the middle for Villa last season while picking up the player of the year.

He´s a lot better than he gets credit for and he´ll provide some serious ammunition for Andy Carroll who should get a good few goals.

You have got yourself a decent player. A Villa/Everton/Bolton kind of decent player. For 20m.

I don't think any of us are under any illusions that Downing is overpriced, much in the same way that Carroll & Henderson were. We could have paid less for foreign players, but with that comes a greater degree of risk, & a possible settling-in period may have been required. The new signings have all done it at Premiership level. So this is their chance, under a better manager, & with better players, to show they're up to taking the next step-up. So if we're able to force our way into regular CL football again. The price we've paid for those English lads will be pretty irrelevant over the medium to long-term.

I agree, if you reach your targets, then the price paid is somewhat irrellevant. But that is a big if. I just notice that you have paid 70m+ for three players worth around 30-35m.

It was possible to get Suarez for a market price I don't see why that couldn't have been done for a centreforward and winger too.

Looks like operation, kick the ball at Andy is in full swing. I expect a crouch return soon

If they click it'll be a very useful asset for Liverpool.

I expect Carroll to get more than a few and Suarez to get on the end of some knock downs as well.

The fees for Carroll and Downing basically just baffles me.

ENglish players always cost more.

United paid the same for Young who (I think) is a similar age and appears to be of similar ability if last season is anything to go on.

Carroll was a transfer driven by circumstance at the time, Liverpool being cahs rich and desperate for a striker, and seemingly keen to fend of any interest which might have materialised this summer for him had he had a decent end to the season.

certainly shows that the board mean business. I suspect if they get into the CL this year they'll back Kenny again.
