Downing to Liverpool?

We're getting Mata if one of Nasri of Cesc leaves. Downing is fecking shite and is right up Liverpool's street with regards to recent transfer policy.

Wenger must think hell will freeze over if he spends more than £15m on one individual, which is why Mata(and Benzema for that matter) are placed firmly in my 'unlikely' file.

I am surprised Arsenal are still linked with another winger when they need to replace at least one or maybe even two central midfielders.

Can someone tell me what Downing has actually done at Villa?

That's part of it. The other part is the Stuart Downing part. I'm of the view-point that if we want to sign a top quality winger, let's go for it. It's not going to hurt. But Downing? That would lead me to self harm.

It's complete rubbish - no top team in England plays 442. Fabregas would be superb in a 442 alongside Vieira if you could play it any more.

Woeful article - if anyone really believes we could go into a season playing a flat 4-4-2 with two out and out wingers and two centre-forwards, they're completely deluded.

Why because you have been so sucessful with the system you have been using? Plus the player who made that system tick will be gone, it is reasonble to think you will at least be looking for a plan b.

Indeed, but not that. If Cesc leaves, I'm still pretty sure it'll be a semblance of 3 in the centre of midfield, if only because it's a tall order to ask Wilshere at 19 to play in a 2.

We do. And we're the best team in England.
You don't - you play sophisticated variants of 4231. Watch those 2 CMs in any game - they're much deeper than in the old Beckham, Scholes, Keane & Giggs days.

You tried it in the CL final and are still recovering.

We also won the League by 9 points and finished 12 points ahead of your lot.

Nice try though. File under the section 'Must try harder' ;)

I never denied that. The point is that you play 4-4-2 very rarely, and when you have played it, it hasn't worked. Which is why you use it sparingly.

If we played 442 in the final then we played 442 pretty much the entire season.

Like when we played it 3 times in a row vs Chelsea and won every single time? Or when we won a CL Semi Final using it?

I'm not saying we use it every single game, we clearly don't. But we do on occasion, and despite your claims, it has quite clearly worked.

I really don't want to get into a discussion which I know I shall 'lose' because you'll post some stats and chalkboards of player footprints to prove that it was a 4-2-3-1 as opposed to 4-4-2.

That's why I didn't take issue with the fact you called it a 442, if that's what you interpret as a 442 then fair enough...but it's the same formation we've played all season?

Focusing on the 442 aspect of that article is missing the point. You may lose two of your best ball players now, with them you have won nothing playing the way you have been. Any players you bring in will likely be a step down in the passing department (for the moment, Wenger will likely bring in some future stars who could blossom) so you might want to bring in somebody who can cross the ball. It works for us.

Pete, does the acquisition of Downing fit into the 10 year plan?
It's complete bollox mate, probably put about by Downing's agent to get Liverpool to up their £15M bid (which is frankly £5M OTT already).

Not really since it gives you an early clue to the stupidity of the writer. I can't be bothered to slag the rest of it when it starts off on such a clueless premise.
