I actually agree with you Sam, especially in terms of attackers. I think United could get 2 or 3 stars for the price of one. I'm fine with United spending a chunk to get a midfielder like De Rossi though, but he wouldnt be near as much as Ribery or Benzema anyways

De Rossi for me will probably be in SAF's plans regarding next summer. I'd let the current batch of midfielders show what they can do this season, fingers crossed Hargreaves can maintain a decent fitness level and Anderson's consistency improves. But if these fail to materialise and the real possibility both Scholsey and Giggsy will retire (:() someone like De Rossi fits the bill perfectly.

Was he the one that kept shooting wide in that video?

Anyway, he looks good from that video but has anyone seen him play a full game even? Anderson looked like a goal scoring winger from his videos.

Exactly. I'm excited at the signing of a Brazilian prospect, but how can anyone predict he would become a world class player from one youtube video

Looking at Anderson's youtube, you have to not blindly follow these videos.

Anderson has offered a lot of what he shows in teh youtube video pace, power, good passing, can beat his man, NOT shooting obviously, he has just obviosuly been deployed in a different position for United.

at 1.12. He should be let loose at Old Trafford. I'd stick him out on the wings.
I really hope we'll see more of that Anderson next season. We have Fletcher, Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves and Giggs to play in the centre of midfield, so I really expect to see more offensive Anderson in some matches.

There were a couple of games last season where he really turned it on going forwards, i think one was the 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal, and in those games he suddenly the complete attacking midfielder.

If only United played Arsenal every match, Anderson has been great v them
away 07-great
fa cup 08-dominated
home 08- he and tevez changed the face of the match once they came on the winner was already coming
away 08-lost, but had an indirect fk blocked by park which was goal bound and cleared two goal bound chances
cl home 09- brilliant possibly his best match for united
cl away -09- very good
home 09- walked on the pitch and won the league, says it all really

Manchester United are expected to escalate their pursuit of Douglas Costa, with Gremio anticipating an offer this week.

The past four months have been frustrating for Douglas. The 18-year-old suffered fatigue from the South American Under-20 championships in January and he has struggled to break into the Gremio team.

Douglas has a buy out clause of £21 million, but sources close to the English champions believe his limited club appearances in 2009 will give United an advantage in negotiations. The opening offer is expected to be around £9 million.

Earlier this month the players agent, Cesar Bottega, told Radio Gaucha: "They have identified four or five possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo in the world, and Douglas is one of them."

Manchester United's ultramodern scouting network in Brazil is paying dividends and earlier this year Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We have invested in two full-time scouts in Brazil. It is a country you should pay attention to. Historically, it has always been a country that produces fantastic footballers and players who can play in big games all the time. They have ability and enthusiasm."

The flamboyant midfilder, spoke recently of his desire to move to Europe and of his admiration for Manchester United. saying "I would like a big club, such as Manchester United."

Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, is back from holiday tomorrow and finding replacements for Ronaldo and Tevez will be an immediate priority for the club.

What's the source Drifter?

Has he been playing recently? Last week Gremio had 2 matches.. I saw the highlights of both but couldn't quite locate him anywhere..

From what i read, gremio doesn't rate him that highly and he has rarely started for them, make of that what you will...

United in dialogue over Brazilian starlet
by Tom Kell , 22 June 2009

Douglas Costa’s agent says Manchester United have held ‘informal talks’ with Gremio about buying the Brazlian.

United’s interest in the Brazil Under-20 international is believed to stretch back up to two years but is likely to intensify in tandem with the inevitable departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been touted as potential suitors for Douglas, who has previously been dubbed ‘the new Ronaldinho’ by observers in his homeland.

The player’s agent, Cesar Bottega, admits that dialogue is ongoing regarding the £20 million-rated 18-year-old but has hinted that a number of hurdles will first have to be overcome before any deal is completed.

“There have been informal conversations and I believe United would match those values,” Bottega told the Brazilian press.

“At the end of the Brasileirão, Douglas will be worth at least twice that.”

Douglas is thought to have recently signed a new four-year deal with Gremio to tie him to the Brazilian club until 2013.

Imagine, another amazing youngster with '7'

what is Uniteds scouting presence at youth games in Brazil like? According to wikipedia he has only made 17 senior starts in his career - at sums of 20million I would want more than 17 appearances. If he is asgood as suggested, surely he should have made more appearances by the age of 18 (nearly 19).

I read something about him being fatigued and as struggled to get into the team since then.

I'm sure Utd have watched more than 17 times though.

fatigued from what though (remember reading something about that but can't remember if reasons were given).

At 18 he shouldn't really be struggling with fatigue imo, and that he has seemingly continued to struggle since then is a further worry imo.

Another change for Rooney?

Don't be silly.
I thought the first change made less sense. Can't see anyone coming in appropriate for no. 7 anyway. Rooney has claimed he wants to sign a lifetime contract and he'll no doubt become a legend. He's still got 10-13 years wearing number seven. I wouldn't want Costa or Valencia getting it which might seem likely seeing as Carrick is using 16 and seven might be up for grabs. Giving another latino number seven after our recent mishaps with them doesn't seem right to me.

You really need not worry about that.. Scouts generally get to watch players in training.. Anyway other than that here is something for you to get your head around.. Dodo who we have allegedly signed has played 0 times for his senior side Corinthians..

Its weird to sign players with such little exposure at senior level when we are spending big amounts on them.

From an international tournament with earlier this year, the Under 19 perhaps.

I wouldn't imagine its something to worry about, it might be mental fatigue for instance. Coaches are always worried about things like this, and it was from this year too so I don't think it'll be an ongoing problem. He's still very very young, lets not forget that.

It looks like our South American scouts have done their job concerning Fabio and Rafael... they've never played a senior game and still made an impact beyond anything I could've expected in their first season (well, at least Rafael, Fabio looked quality as well whenever he wasn't out injured).

Costa - "I Dream Of Manchester United transfer"

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=656135&cc=5739

£25 million rated Brazilian sensation, Douglas Costa, has finally spoke out in regards to his antipated transfer to Premiership champions, Manchester United. It was previously thought that Costa was intent on persuing a move to Barcelona, but it can be confirmed that his heart is now set on playing at Old Trafford next year.

"How could anyone say no to Manchester United? Of course, I have a current contract at Gremio, but I'm sure they'd respect my wishes should an offer be tabled. I, like many other youngsters of my age, dream of playing for a team like Manchester United, just as Da Silva and Anderson did. I, too, would like to fulfil my dream."

Sir Alex Ferguson is sure to be alerted by the Gremio prodigy's latest quotes yet, despite having £80 million to spend as a result of Ronaldo's expected move to La Liga runners up, Real Madrid, he is unsure as to whether Gremio's valuation is realistic. Costa has been touted as the "New Ronaldinho" by many corners of the South American press, having illuminated the Brazilian First Division with his explosive pace, trickery and movement. Any potential deal is unlikely to be concluded, however, until the United boss returns from his holiday in France.

Sounds like a possibility, to be honest. I've not seen anything of him other than that Youtube video, where he predictably looks to be a bit of a footballing demon. Any Brazilian football viewers here?

From the U-20 competition.. Although I am sure that is just a cover-up.. He may have some fitness issues or may not in his managers opinion be ready for the 1st team yet.. or its further possible that they may be protecting him..

I was Infact trying to sway you in the other direction.. We will never sign a player without much insight into it.. I am quite certain after a scout locates a talent he watches him on and off the pitch (for a fair amount of time) and it goes beyond that scout too.. If he is deemed good enough other scouts (probably some more experienced ones) too have a look at him either through Video tapes or detailed written scout reports or even by going to the location of the player and having a look in person..

Nearly 300 posts on a guy no-one's actually seen play more than a couple of times?

Hmmm.

I'd have the same type of reservations. If this guy is this good, why has he only played 17 games just before he reaches 19? You would expect him to play a lot more.

Aye - a lot of hype alright, but how many times had any of us seen Ronaldo when he was signed ?

Oh I know, I'm not doubting the lad's ability - I've got no reason to - but I'm just not sure what there is to talk about that's worthwhile spending time on.

Was there a lot of hype when Ronaldo signed?

Even more I guess, especially after his game against us (Even the players were talking about him on their way back to Manchester)
