Premier League - United target told to stay

Eurosport - Wed, 15 Oct 12:07:00 2008

Teenage Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa had been advised to shun interest from Manchester United and continue his career in his homeland.

Gremio attacking midfielder Douglas has emerged as a transfer target for the Red Devils, who have a very strong scouting network in South America.

Over the past year, United have already plundered top Brazilian talents like Rodrigo Possebon, and twins Rafael and Fabio, and Douglas looks to be the latest on Sir Alex Ferguson's agenda.

Jaap Stam, recently added to United's scouting staff by Ferguson, watched 18-year-old Douglas in action earlier this month and is reported to have issued a glowing report.

However, the player's agent Cesar Bottega has advised his charge to wait before making a move to Europe, having just made his senior debut with the Porto Alegre club.

"Douglas still has to grow up," Bottega told Terra Brazil.

"I wouldn't like him to be transferred to a European team yet because when you start to negotiate with teams from the European market like the Italian, English or Spanish, it is not always possible to make your wishes come true and that puts pressure on."

Douglas was linked with United for as much as £20 million and he admitted that sort of money would be hard for Gremio to turn down.

"I think that it is too early to transfer to a team like Manchester United, but if they have offered 80 million Reais to Gremio then that is important."

Despite playing down the interest, Bottega confirmed that both United and Real Madrid - represented by sporting director Predrag Mijatovic - had watched the teenager.

"The Europeans already knew Douglas as they have seen him play in the Brazilian youth national teams but they needed to see him in action for a senior side," added Bottega.

"Against Santos and Botafogo, Douglas showed that he can play among professional players but that doesn't mean that he has to be transferred to a European team now.

"We know about the interest of some teams and that the offers are important but I have the same opinion as that of his mother, in that it isn't the moment yet to be playing in Europe."

Gremio were quick to deny receiving any offers for Douglas.

"The story about Manchester and Real Madrid is pure speculation," said director of football Andre Krieger.

"If we want to win the Copa Libetadores, we need Douglas to stay."

However, Brazilian businessman Fernando Cesar - who claims to be an intermediary working with United - says their interest is genuine.

"I actually asked him [Stam] to see all the players, among them Douglas Costa - I said he was an interesting player and he could see that for himself, but the interest of Manchester in Douglas is a natural thing," he told the Brazilian media.

Just read this on a blog, not too detailed but at least it gives us an idea of what he's like:

To those who want to know about Douglas Costa
i have been locked up watching matches of los tricoles (gremio) and i have come to a conclusion:

Douglas costa, a nifty lil fella who is carlos tevez in everything except colour and nationality, and in brasil those are two big things, if there is one thing that amazes me about the guy, his free kicks, and his work horse mentality, he just never stops running he is exactly like tevez. he’s a bit thin and only about 5′6″ max but he may grow a bit more and he will gain weight the older he gets as the lad is only 18 but he has a bright future ahead of him, he has decent technique, is pretty fast, never stops running and takes a great free kick, is two footed and may have a a high ceiling.
on top of it all he is coming from a great farm system (im my opinion the best in brasil, ronaldino lucas and anderson anyone?)

now for the negatives, he is really small, and i mean small, he will get murdered by premier league defenders, he is selfish, makes all those 17 year old ronaldo like mistakes of doing too much at once, but that will change with experience

in conclusion, i would say only buy the player if Alex teixeria and lulinha are gone, and tevez costs too much.
He is alot like tevez too much if i have to say.
A work in progress with a lot of skill(not ronaldinho like, but has a great first touch), best of all he is brasilian.
Tevez is already proven in the league, whether he will be as good or better only the future can tell

Fergie is after new Ronaldinho

Published: Today

MANCHESTER UNITED have made an £8million bid for Brazilian whizkid Douglas Costa, 18.
Boss Alex Ferguson is desperate to snap up the “new Ronaldinho” and see off competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Costa is the star of Brazil’s Under-19 team and plays for Gremio.

Fergie wants the deal sorted next week and is willing to let him stay in Brazil until next summer.

£8 million? That's some wishful thinking there. Chances are he might turn out a little bit better than Lucas Leiva and his fee is sure to reflect that.

Lucas is the hottest youth prospect in the whole world though...or according to Liverpool fans he is.

Costa interview in Marca. Does it seem familiar?

Costa: I Want To Play For Real Madrid

Manchester United have been dealt a blow after Douglas Costa announced that he wants to play for Real Madrid and dreams of appearing in the Bernabéu one day.

The highly-rated Brazilian midfielder is being tracked by both the Red Devils and Los Merengues, but the Spanish club have gained an advantage after the player stated that he wants to join them.

Costa, 18, caught the eye of several major clubs in January when he starred in the junior Copa Santiago tournament which led Gremio to tie him to a contract until 2013.

Despite that, the interest from both United and Madrid has filtered through to the player and he has admitted that he is flattered by the interest from the current Spanish champions.

"Of course, I would like to play for Real Madrid. Despite the fact that I owe everything to Gremio it would be fantastic and a great honour to be able to play in the Santiago Bernabéu," he told Marca.

"I am delighted that a club the size of Real Madrid have shown an interest in me. I am proud and it proves that I am doing things the right way.

"It is not normal that a club like that is watching a player like me, with so little experience at the top level.

"I hope to repay their interest one day by playing in the white shirt."

United already have one former Gremio starlet in their ranks in Anderson, while Ronaldinho is arguably the club's most famous export in recent years.

Reading between the lines, this whole saga is nothing more than the usual tedious machinations between the player, his agent and Real Madrid. No doubt our interest is entirely fabricated but by making it seem as though we're chasing him Calderon will gain kudos from their fans, for supposedly bloodying our nose and teaching us a lesson for blocking the Ronaldo deal last summer.

fecking Real Madrid. Is there a more loathsome club in world football?

Have a Gremio supporting friend. Last I heard he'd still only played 6 matches for the first team and he's already got a bit arrogant, thinking he's a rapper and stuff.

You seem to have a friend who supports every club in the world. How many friends can a man who spends at least 5 hours on redcafe a day possible have?

Are you friends with Jesus? Thought I'd just throw that one out there.

18 years Old played 10 games for Gremio scored just the once.

Small kid, bags of pace and skill and an absolute wand of a left foot, equally adept on his right hand peg as well.

Sounds promisimng then Stobzila.
Personaly i'd rather go for a lad such as this than an established player like Valencia. It is more exciting to see a player learn and develop than get an almost finished article.

Wouldn't see why we can't grab both, we'd need cover anyway as I think SAF would inch him along.

Or not, might just throw him straight in, I still think we'd be safer with both Valencia and another.

Good point,i think Valencia is a cert but i can't help but think it may be a smokescreen for a big signing that will blow us all away (ok i may be wishfull thinking now)

...we will get a player we dont expect.....SAF is a crafty man....

my only concern is this constant noise about Vidic leaving...

Yes it is mentioned too much for it to be total bullshit, does not mean he is off but there may be some truth in it.

Thing is teams have seen we have the best defence in world football and will try to take them from us,lets hope there are no more depatures that we don't want.

I've mentioned the same Gremio supporting friend about 4 times. If Gremio are the only club in the world, then I sure do have a friend who supports every club in the world.

I'm sure that Tim Vickery answered questions about this lad in his BBC blog at one point and said that he is no where near ready to leave Brazil for a European club yet.

Also he isn't the only young Brazilian we have been linked to in the past Dodo, and also Alex Teixeira of Vasco da Gama. Whom said they'd turned down a bid.

Cracking little talent, but still a raw one.

Only seen him play about 4 games, mind, as he hasn't played an awful lot. Always caught my eye, though. He's very quick and very skillful.

21M is a joke though. No way a team will pay that much for him at this stage. He has alot of potential but he's got a long way to go.

Man Utd approach Brazilian sensation

Douglas Costa has been contacted by Manchester United, with a view to filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots, his agent has claimed.

The Brazilian’s representative, Cesar Bottega, has affirmed that The Red Devils, who are searching for a replacement for Ronaldo, are keeping a close watch on Gremio star Costa.

A host of clubs are fighting to secure the flying winger’s services, with United on the list of potential suitors, Bottega has claimed.

The spectacular Brazilian league starlet is seen as Ronaldinho’s successor in his homeland, and the promising attacker could seal a move to Old Trafford this summer according to Bottega.

“They [Manchester United] have identified four or five possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo in the world, and Douglas is one of them,” Bottega told Radio Gaucha.

“We have been contacted by several clubs some time ago, including Manchester [United], but by South American ones as well.”

Manchester United could be ready to make a swoop for Brazilian sensation Douglas Costa, his agent has confirmed.

The Red Devils have been tracking Costa for nearly two years after their South American scouring network highlighted his potential.

Now 18, the Gremio starlet is again under consideration by United, who feel he could help fill the void soon to be left by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure to Real Madrid.

Costa has also been tracked by the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan over the past 18 months, and Gremio managed to tie him to a big four-year deal.

But they are unlikely to stand in his way and the young forward's agent has confirmed that United have rekindled their interest in the wake of Ronaldo's transfer.

"They [Manchester United] have identified four or five possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo in the world, and Douglas is one of them," agent Cesar Bottega told Radio Gaucha.

"We have been contacted by several clubs some time ago, including Manchester [United], but by South American ones as well."
