Douglas Costa

I don't think that it is practical most of the time as the immigration laws of the UK are prohibitive. If the young fellas are really any good they hardly want to go to Antwerp for three years until they can get a permit (ala Dong).

Another reason why I can't see us spending 21m on him so!

CARLOS TEVEZ FUTURE IN DOUBT
United target 18-year-old wonderkid Douglas Costa

THE OLD TRAFFORD future of Carlos Tevez has been thrown into doubt by Manchester United’s pursuit of Douglas Costa.

United recently claimed there was no hitch in the Tevez deal — even though boss Alex Ferguson had hinted the Argie would have to wait until the end of the season before getting a permanent transfer.

But Sport of the World understands United are deadly serious about capturing 18-year-old attacking midfielder Costa, who is also on the hitlist of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

And after signing a new contract with his club Gremio, Costa’s fee would be around £20million.

Fire
With United set to feel the financial squeeze as much as anybody, it is highly unlikely that a £20m move for Costa would be sanctioned in addition to a £30m deal for 24-year-old Tevez.

That, of course, is the astonishing amount United will have to pay to MSI, the company that owns Tevez’s registration.

United are likely to hang fire over Tevez until they see how the chase for Costa pans out and, of course, until they see if Cristiano Ronaldo reignites his desire to move to Real Madrid.

But United are assembling a strong Brazilian contingent and Costa would be joining compatriots Anderson, Rodrigo Possebon and the Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio.

While Tevez’s future is unclear, Gary Neville and Ben Foster are to be offered new deals.

The injury-plagued England internationals have spent the best part of THREE YEARS between them on the sidelines in recent seasons.

But both players, whose deals expire next summer, will open talks in the next few weeks.

Deal

United captain Neville, 33, has proved he is now back to his best after his prolonged ankle problems which kept him out of action for 18 months.

He signed a four-year extension to his deal in 2004 and United have a policy of not offering long deals to players above the age of 30.

He is expected to follow the lead set recently by Paul Scholes by signing a rolling one-year agreement — along with winger Ryan Giggs, who we recently revealed was in talks. Darren Fletcher also signed a deal to keep him at United until 2012.

Until this season, Neville had hardly played since injuring his ankle against Bolton in March 2007 and has not added to his 85 caps in that time.

But his role this season has convinced Fergie he is worth a contract extension. He made his first league appearance in 18 months against Chelsea last month.

He has also not given up on an international return following the recent omission of Manchester City right-back Micah Richards from Fabio Capello’s squad.

Foster, 25, is currently on the treatment table again after twisting an ankle at the start of last month.

But the keeper will be rewarded with a contract extension until 2012 and improved pay terms of around £40,000 a week.

Why do they bother? We know that isn't the amount that needs to be paid - that's the total including all the loan fees etc for 2 years, yet the papers keep quoting this £30m fee we still have to pony up.

Bloody crap lazy journalism

No we don't.

No we don't.

OK we don't know, but when we signed him all the papers (e.g. Daily Telegraph, The Independent) agreed that we we're paying around £4-8m a year as a loan fee, and then there was an agreed price set (of between £14-20m) to sign him permanently after the 2 years.

Thus the most we still need to splash out is £20m, and it could be a lot less. As David Gill said at the time "The fee is in place. I won't tell you what it is but it is still cheap.". This £30m+ figure being quoted is what it would cost any other club who came in and tried to sign him (i.e. City).

So theoretically, going by your information, we could have to pay MSI a loan fee of £8m and then a transfer fee of £20m. That would add up to £28m, which is close enough to the £30m the papers have been talking about.

Just a bit of sensationalism.

maybe the papers have forgotten that we are selling ronaldo for 85m and signing douglas + silva + tevez and will have money left over for the glazers to pocket

or maybe , just maybe , we might sign ziverloon and palacios with the remaining cash

We've already paid that fee though, just to have him play for us, these last two seasons.

And the figure of 20m is the maximum fee quoted to sign him permanently. With Gill describing the fee as "cheap" chances are we're not expecting to have to pay the highest figure quoted in the rags.

Ferguson said:"There is no question about his long-term future here."

"David Gill (the club's chief executive) has spoken to his agent and told him we are very happy with him.

"The fee is in place. I won't tell you what it is but it is still cheap.

United are understood to have agreed to pay £6 million over the next two years for the 23-year-old and wages of £90,000-a-week, with an option to buy the player outright for £20 million in 2009.

20m for him isnt bad at all

a whole 38 seconds of highlights which reminded me of the Anderson clips, and we all know how that turned out. Half the country thought we were signing Ronaldinho, what we got was Nicky Butt with dreadlocks

In fairness that seems to be down to the fact Fergie has insisted such. Firstly, he's obviously a lot more skillfull than Nicky Butt anyway, and secondly, he'd never played the sort of role he does for us before he joined us.

I think there isn't much room for that attacking midfielder nowadays, they must play either in the central two, or as a wide player. Anderson has learned to play in the middle i guess. To be honest, still not sure we've worked out how best to use him.

Except it is not just Fergie, he plays a similar role for Brazil as well.

Anderson is an excellent player and nothing like Nicky Butt who was about average.

Know one genetically modified Anderson's compilation!! Believe it or not the things he actually done in those clips, he can actually do!! And he doesn't have dreadlocks you dweeb!!

Very harsh. Anderson is a far more talented midfielder than Nicky Butt ever was. There is still a lot more to come from him, namely goals.

Nicky Butt was not average, and GB is right even though he might be exaggerating things a bit. We thought we were getting Ronaldinho and we ended up getting a Fletcher who could dribble would be closer to the truth.

It may seem a bit extreme but the idea behind it is right.

crappy, he was placed deeper by Dunga after they saw him play there for us, not before. he wasn't even capped for the senior squad before he came to us.

a better indication would be his position in the U17 and youth tournament squads and there he played in a much more advanced role.

it is clear the boy is still learning the position. his movement is still not quite there, and you can see that. on occasion, he does make forward runs, but not that often. once he matures, you'll see a different player.

Nicky Butt was a bit average. Stating that I agree with the Fletcher's part. Anyone linking Anderson with Ronaldinho was definetely on coke.

I liked Nicky Butt, never really dominated midfields and lacked the attacking ability to ever stand out in our team, but I thought he was a very accomplished passer, a great tackler and he was always in the right positions when he needed to be.

Exactly!! But to compare him to Fletcher is also dumb!! Considering he finds it hard to last a full match, and his main attributes being Pace, Strength and Running at opponents. Hardly Darren Fletcher.

His main attributes for us so far have been to put in 100% effort, the ability to step it up against the big teams and a very good presser of the ball.

i knew a bird once who looked like nicky butt with dreads ... poor bitch

You're talking about Fletcher there, right?

And Anderson. Those are the three attributes that consistently stood out last season. The rest of the time were flashes of brilliance which obviously shown he has more in his locker, but he's the complete opposite of what he was hyped up to be. Not that it matters.

Dunno about that. He was hyped up as a skilful speedster, with a great eye for a pass. And he showed all these attributes last season.

Unfortunately, we've only seen these skills in glimpses, usually in the first half, before he fades away. And we've also been surprised by attributes we didn't even know he had.

But I still think he might turn out just as good as he was hyped up to be. But we need to be patient.

It isn't. Anderson is being played at United in a role that is not his natural role at all. His natural role is the one in which he destroyed Arsenal in the FA cup.

Excellent Post.

What I even find even more hilarious is some of the cretins claiming people were on crack when they said Anderson was a Ronaldinho in the making, don't seem to recall that at Anderson's age Ronaldinho wasn't as good as Anderson is now. Neither was he constantly played out of position.

How can a 19 year old be played out of position?

He's played more games, as a pro, for United than the rest of his career put together. The position he plays for us is his best position, obviously.

Does my head in when people think kids pop out of the womb with "AM" or "DM" running through their DNA.

Maybe he just can't play in his 'natural role' in the Premier League though, or else he would have been played there more often last season. Maybe our team doesn't suit playing that system with the current players. Or maybe we have better players for that position and SAF has found the best position for Anderson in this team.
