Reading through this forum, it seems like a lot of posters are confused as to why we bought him. I believe we bought vdb to be a squad player to fill in for both Pogba and Bruno but the make up of the squad has changed since summer 2020.

We ended 19/20 season with Pogba and Matic playing behind Bruno; not McFred playing behind Bruno. I believe Ole bought him to play Pogba's position in cm or Bruno's cam position if either we're unavailable or needed resting. Unfortunately, after the spurs 6-1 horror show, Ole realised that he couldn't play Pogba as cm and reverted to McFred. Personally I think Donny can't play cm for same reasons as Pogba and I think Ole feels the same.

I also think during the summer we signed vdb, Ole may not have expected Bruno to maintain his form from the previous year and be the undisputed starter that he's become. As a result of Bruno's status, vdb hasn't been able to get games in that position either.

I think he was brought in for the right reasons with the intention to be played semi regularly but ultimately it hasn't worked out. Best for all parties if he's sold imo.

How can you judge the Donny can't play cm when he has had so few chances to play there with the first team.

That's what makes me laugh about Donny theories and people making excuses for Ole. The kid hasn't been given a chance.

McFred have been awful, give the guy a run of 3 league games in CM and see how he does. The treatment of Donny is criminal and boarders on unprofessional.

If this was the chance he was going to get it was 100% wrong to keep him in the summer.

You’ve nailed it for me. He was signed to fulfill the role that Pereira was filling. This came after Pogba was injured for most of the season so seemed more necessary. He’s also been more crap than expected. If Ole wants to sacrifice one of Fred or McTominay then VDB still needs to get ahead of a superior player in Pogba.

"The kid" isn't any better than the once we got. It isn't his position either. He has had time an minutes already to show what he can do. We ain't in a position to play a guy to see if he gets better than the others.

It's quite simple, he ain't rated by the manager and the staff. And rightly so

You'd think we would have sold him

Given our midfield i think we're exactly in that position. Sticking with midfield options who are regularly putting in poor performances because the unknown might also be poor is a terrible reason.

CM is his position of you watched him at Ajax.

How can you claim he isn't better than Fred and Mctominay who have been awful by all accounts. He hasn't had game time.

When were the time and minutes you speak he has had to show what he is about. Players can do much with 5 or 10 minutes here and there. Everytime he has started (which is very few) it has been with the B team essentially.

Playing McFred continually and expecting something different is the definition of futile. It has to be mixed up and can hardly be worse.

That's a solid theory, but how do we explain Ole not using Donny when Pogba was out last season for six to weeks with injury? Pogba can and does in fact play CM quite well, but but McFred crap their pants at the sight of a football and thus we rarely can ever play through the thirds with those two and thus Pogba is hung out to dry.

Van De Beek was also injured for four of those weeks.

Im not making excuses for Ole. I don't think he can play in a 2 because like Pogba, he's an attacking midfielder. Just saying how I see it.

The fact that VDB has been so measured in expressing his frustration (barring the chewing gum throwing episode) makes us look all the more worse at player management.

Based on what though, you have hardly seen him play. Your just basing your opinion on sound bites from Ole and pundits...

I'm not saying you wouldn't be proven right, I just think it is BS to make such absolute statements "saying it how it is", backed up by nothing but unfounded opinion.

I didn't say "that's how it is," I said "that's how I see it." Also in my post I used terms such as "I believe." I never made "absolute statements," I merely shared my opinion.

I regards to backing up my opinion, I've only seen him in a handful of Ajax games prior to his arrival here, all of which he played as an attacking mid/second striker. A very small sample size, obviously. Once again, I have never claimed to be correct. I shared an opinion on an online forum.

I apologise for the absolute part, I'm my haste to reply I did misread the end of your post, sorry for that.

We obviously have different opinions which is fine. I just get extremely frustrated that we have a player who has played in semi-finals of the CL and proven himself of the highest stage who can't get a chance in a position we are really poor in. If Fred and Mctominay did the business this wouldn't be a conversation.

VDB played in the pivot in his last season at Ajax after De Jong left. He also played there together with De Jong behind Ziyech as a no 10 in the previous season for a few games.

Playing in the pivot on paper, it was more box to box similair to the way McTominay usually plays for us, and not how Matic plays.

Thought I should clarify this. It's not like he only played deeper in the youth teams, which has been implied by some.

No worries mate. I too, would like to see him given a chance in the cm position but from the little that I've of him don't think he really suits our system.

Thanks for clearing this up for me as I've not seen a lot of him.

Out of interest, who would you pair him with for us if you were picking the team?

It really looks as though he will be at the club longer than Ole now, so maybe he will get some games under a new manager. I hope so.

Fecking hell - what should he do to get games ? You have a dreadful midfield currently and what exactly is he going to lose by starting Donny.

He must dislike Ole by now. Watching so many shit performances and players like lingard and Mctominay are subbed in instead

We should let him go for free in January.

He played really good against West Ham in the League Cup and since then 0 minutes.

We were 1-2 down against Leicester and Solskjaer brings on McTominay instead of him :wenger:

Even worse, McTominay failed on the defensive side after the equaliser, so bringing on a more "defensive" midfielder instead of an offensive one even backfired

I'm getting more and more convinced Ole gets the boot and whoever comes in gives VDB some minutes and he puts in some decent performances and people question wtf Ole was doing. I don''t see him setting the world on fire but he deserves more than 5 minutes in the PL 8 games in.

Hard to work out, we have the worst midfield in the league and DVB cant get a game. Beyond a joke.

Well if there's a new manager this season than he this could change in his case. Otherwise, he's 100% leaving, probably in January.

Imagine being Donny. You stay the whole international break and train and on a match day sit on the bench and see the likes of Scott and Jessie coming on

Donny if you're reading this just hold on a little longer, Ole will be sacked by Christmas and you'll get your chance.

Ole should be fired just for his awful handling of Donny. I am not thinking of Donny as some world beater but he has done lots of hard work evidently but sees Fred and McT getting chances ahead of him despite them being out of depth. Ole comes out with some bullshit when questioned about Donny and continues not giving him chances.

Remember in the west Ham game people were claiming Donnie a defensive liability as the reason he cant play

I don't care if he is shit or if just Ole consider him shit. He had one year to asses him. He decided that he does not like him. DvB asked to leave but Ole didn't let him in case we had a crisis with everyone injured. If you want a 35 million player just for a crisis then you are truly an awful manager.
