That's kind of the sad truth isn't it- they offer more physicality and defensive solidity. As more of an attacking midfielder he has to compete with Bruno and Pogba. It's like where do you play this guy? And why the feck was he even bought in the first place?

I hope he does well and proves everyone wrong but i've seen this happen with our fanbase over the years where a player is heralded as a saviour but it's the manager that just can't see it. We've had "free Shinji Kagawa", why doesn't Jose play Mkhitaryan or Andreas Peireira, and now DVB. In hindsight the managers might have been correct on all of those calls.

And then there are players like Fred and Dalot who at first couldn't get a game at all and are now starting for us. Point being there's no need to generalize on a few examples.

To be fair there was never the same amount of fan obsession with either of those as there was with Kagawa, Mkhitaryan or even Perieira at one point but yes, some players do turn it around under different managers. Fair point.

Fred had a thread on here "why did we buy Fred?" and I do think there was some pressure. Not as much as #freeKagawa but still. Dalot to a lesser extent.

If he’s good at Everton or Tony in Spain, not sure it tells us anything we didn’t know. Both are good players but there is a difference playing here than for most teams, the shirt just fits differently and comes with the weight of expectation. I can’t remember many senior players going out on loan and coming back to do well at their respectful club.

I think the main difference is that Tony has had plenty of chances whereas Donny hasn’t.

He def didn’t and should have got more, that is no doubt. Still an absolute mystery why he didn’t and I could only put it down to his competition was Bruno and not Fred or Scott.

We must understand why Ole and Ralf refused to give Donny a proper chance: United simply have too much quality in midfield already.

"In the end, it’s a question of competition," explained Rangnick when asked about the Dutchman's omission.

"Like Paul Pogba, I see him in the centre of midfield as one of the 6 or 8 positions and we have quite a few other good players in those positions, therefore he didn’t get much game-time.

Just 30 minutes tonight, once he's finished with this loan spell it's probably best for United and the player to let him go back to Ajax.

Mind boggling that Ole and Ralf refused to give Donny a proper chance. Maybe he is shit in training, but in competitive play he’s vastly superior to McTominay. Putting in a great shift under Frank right now.

Nice to see him starting and doing well. The energy from that Everton team is something.

DvB has been brilliant so far. His technique and football brain are so far ahead of everyone else.

He's had a good half. Good involvement for the first goal. Other than that been fairly quiet, but he has done what's been asked of him. Seems to be playing very deep though, not that much involved in the final third.

What does this say about Ole and now ,arguably more importantly, Ralf if Beek is a success in midfield for Everton ?

stop it mate, stop; this hurts. we know he is good, we just don’t understand why he wasn’t given a fair chance when it was only Fred or Mctominay who we would’ve dropped.

Played well, faded a bit in the second half, put that down to match fitness but a good solid performance, with lots of composed play. He doesn't have an expansive passing range but he is good at the short stuff and when around the box he takes up good positions, and the willingness to get his foot in will be appreciated by their fans.

The thing with Van de Beek is that Everton is probably his level. Will be nice to see him play as an 8 properly and not be asked to be a 10... But for United's needs, he's not the sort of player we need as our 8. Regardless how he does. He can be a good player but the wrong player stylistically for our needs.

I see your point, but don’t we need players like Donny right now who can pass and now while we rebuild the squad to the level we expect?

Stylistically, we’re pretty shit this season.

He's a player who is always moving and looking for the forward pass. Surely he fits us a lot more than some of the static and clumsy players we've got in the team?

I reckon he came in and scoffed at the way we played under Ole, he seems to demand to play the he wants/has learnt to play. That got the coaches backs up and they refused to play him. By the time Ralf came in, his not match fit, and fighting behind pogba, mct and Fred.
