Van de Beek would be extremely dangerous in a double pivot.

The guy is constantly running in to free positions which leaves the other midfielder by himself.

I can see why he isn't picked as a CM in a double pivot. I find him more suited to a 3 man midfield.
Would that be offset by the ability to find space and create open passing lanes when we have the ball? That's our biggest issue right now.

Shaw even said it. We have no one to pass to.

Matic plays as a 3rd cb when we get the ball and mct marks himself out of the game alot of the time.

Fred is the only good one at showing for the ball.

I just want to see him given a proper chance. If he isn't good enough, then fine. But he hasn't even been given a shot. Not even a little bit. If McFred were lighting it up it I would kind of understand, but obviously they haven't. So what is going on that VdB doesn't even get a little bit of a shot? Hopefully he gets to start in midfield against Villa

Better for both parties if we get rid of him, it’s painfully obvious he isn’t cut for the pressure that comes with a big club. The whole «take care of him»-nonsense from Ajax was a huge red flag in retrospect. Very limited player, especially in England where everything is faster, more physical and where room is limited. Not his type of football, would thrive in Germany one would think.

Then play him?

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

"That's some catch, that Catch-22," he observed.

"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

Then play him?

I think he’ll get more games, though I’ve been saying this for a while. But clearly to look at us now, what would be the harm in giving him minutes. I think he’ll start the cup game against Villa next week.

Donny is paid handsomely to train week after week and sit on the bench every matchday, but on some cosmic level it really is criminal what this club is doing to him.

It is a world cup year so I imagine Donny isn't too concerned with pay at the moment but rather minutes on the pitch to get into the world cup squad.

It's really ridiculous to keep him in another window when he's not getting used.

Whether he's good enough or not isn't relevant anymore as far as I'm concerned. The way we've treated him, essentially wasting one and a half seasons of his career, is a really poor way to behave. Solskjaer is fully to blame for that. The lad should've been allowed to leave, or at least go on loan.

I've read in recent articles about the divide in the players camp at the club, that VdB is seen by the coaches as a player who's technique is pristine but in training he struggles to cover the ground during training sessions, hence why RR is not selecting him for PL games since his arrival.

And this is an example of why we will always struggle in the modern day.

We put running first over technique. United don't care about looking after the ball, that's why everything is always so sloppy in possession.

It's all about get the ball forward quickly, into the box ASAP and hope for the best. % football that big Sam would be proud of.

Compare that to Liverpool that have amazing technique combined with speed, we just look like a poor imitation.

Now i'm not saying DVB IS the answer to all our problems, but if we aimed to have a proper footballing midfield that relied on looking after the ball, he'd be our best choice of current midfielders.

He quite clearly thinks and passes faster than any of our midfielders. 1 or 2 touches at max.

That makes no sense at all. Not sure which match it was, but VDB had covered the most distance of the whole match, by a long shot. Would be weird that he can do that, but not on the training ground, while also being drilled at Ajax to cover a lot of ground.

So if the coaching team decided tha VDB cant run and is ill-suited for the league, why we havent sold him since last summer?

I don't think he has been given a fair chance to prove what he is capable off. He either needs a run of 4 or 5 games or allowed to leave.

Just to back up my earlier comment.

Tactical Analysis: Ajax's midfield sensation Donny van de Beek (totalfootballanalysis.com)

As mentioned before, the Ajax system stretches the opposition horizontally, creating space vertically for late runners to the edge of the box. Van de Beek takes full advantage of that. He has covered 10.1km per 90 minutes this season, an Ajax high. This illustrates his relentless running and willingness to keep getting in the box to affect the game.

So he was able to cover the most distance per 90 minutes in the Ajax 2019 team over a whole season. But he can't make runs on the training ground? I call bullshit

He's barely even featured. How is it "painfully obvious" he isn't cut for the pressure of a big club?

Exactly, sounds a bit like bullshit. His work rate was always one of the things he was praised for, and he's clearly not slower than Matic and Scott.

This is a bs leak.
Besides the obvious bullshit argument. Why is running even a thing? If the whole team presses correctly, an individual player doesn't even need to run that much.

Mctominay has put in several displays over the past 3 years that are miles below the worst we have seen from Donny. That said it's time for VDB to go, it's not going to work for him here.

I still think there's a brief from the board to play the likes of Scott, Maguire, AWB where possible. Their performances do not warrant regular starts.
The second paragraph you wrote is the one that scares me the most. The reason it scares me is because i cannot disagree, this board has an agenda. All three of them, id happily get rid of for free.

It's not a case of "running over technique", but you have to be able to cover a certain amount of ground and have a certain amount of movement. Otherwise players with pristine technique would be playing at the highest level until they literally drop dead.

Whenever he's played in CM I don't remember him ever looking more gassed than any other player.

He does struggle further up the pitch though where speed is more important.

That's strange if true about his fitness. If it is true, then why the hell did we sign him? We seem to have a hell of a lot of other stragglers in the squad too who can barely run. Just such a weird situation, surely only by playing him can he get up to match fitness?

Stats have shown that he's a player that has a high distance coverage per 90 mins/match. So it doesn't seem true or something is lost in translation and they mean a completely different thing
