Television Doctor Who

Well that was shit.

At least Clara is fit. Saves it a bit.

Tbf, nothing typifies "in my day" revisionism like Dr bloody Who. It's always as daft as a brush, and frequently awful, but everyone pretends - very seriously - that it's getting worse and worse, and nowhere near as good as it was when they really liked it. T'was always and T'will continue to be the way for many day to come.

I watched City of Death on US Netflix quite recently. It ends with the companion punching the villan in the face and running away. Daft. As. A. fecking. Brush.

C'mon - are your seriously suggesting that today's pantomime (bar the CGI) is in ANY way better that the Tom Baker era? Daft as a brush it may be but surely Julian Glover's Mona Lisa scam out plots Lesbian and Lizards?

And why I agree that "in my day" revisionism' stinks there is a hell of a lot to be said for yesteryears music and bigger Wagon Wheels.

Was this week rubbish again? Haven't been bothered to watch it yet and I'm thinking about giving up

After 2 previous good episodes. This was another shit one. It was so cringe worthy. Still not worse than the Robin Hood one, that was horrific.

I've enjoyed all the episodes. Feck y'all.

I had given up watching Doctor Who after Season 6, but I jumped back on for this season because of Capaldi. Well, Capaldi has been good. The characters and plot lines are still cringeworthy though, might jump off again until Moffat leaves.

Time Heist as mentioned was good. The rest are bog standard shit. And I don't mind mindless shit, but this is Twilight shit. Can't stand Twilight shit.

Hope Moffat fcks off soon, this show needs a proper nerd. Can't we campaign for that IT Crowd geek who is also a director?

Oh Capaldi is aces. He's a brilliant doctor, shame about the writing he has to work with.

Saturday's episode was crap. I usually quite enjoy the 'sitcom' (for lack of a better term) type episodes for what they are but this was just tragic. Moffat has been a poor showrunner.

Of course it is! And isn't. It depends what you pick out. It's not Howard's End. Dr Who has never been prestige television, it's always been a daft, quirky little show with a remit to do anything. Sometimes it does really good stuff, and sometimes it does this..

And there's nothing inherently wrong with Lesbian Lizards. The companions these days are infinitely better drawn and acted than they ever were in the 'good old days' when their entire remit consisted of "Yes, Doctor. But what does that mean Doctor?" and "LOOK OUT!"...And then there's K-9. I mean, seriously?

You want Panto? How about some Baker era...

Not to mention that Baker took over from a man who drove a little yellow gadget car and wore a fecking cape! It's Panto all the way baby. Sometimes it isn't, but it also very often is.

People will complain about Dr Who not being as good as it was for as long as it's on the air. It's par for the course. Personally I found the Tennant/RTD era far more insufferable/panto/Twiilight than the Moffat run. And that's apparently one of the most popular eras ever.

I can't remember the last time they did a two-part episode. Every single episode seems to be a standalone with quite a bit of time devoted to the companion/s personal lives apart from the Doctor, and several minutes devoted to the season/seasons long story arc Moffat keeps trying to pull off. They don't leave themselves enough time to actually develop a proper story with a decent conclusion within the episode itself. Having a two-parter or two every season would help with that.

Last two parter was in Smith's second to last season. They said they were going to focus on single parters for last season. Seems it's going to continue on.

He has to be the worst doctor since Sylvester mcoy and he was a joke

That episode was worse than the one where David Tennant had the Olympic torch, which took some doing.

I thought it was shit for 10-15 minutes and then it was alright. Capaldi clearly could be a great Doctor, as could Smith have been, but the fecking writing is absolutely crap.

It wasn't just terrible cack handed story telling, it was terrible cack handed allegory that fumbled it's landing dangerously close to Tea Party propaganda.

Completely awful.

Who did the writing in the Tennant era? We need him back.

That was Russell T Davies. He was a decent show runner, and back then Steven Moffat (the current show runner) wrote really good standalone stories. It was only once he took the reins that he began to write drivel consistently.

I was actually wishing I'd been aborted myself half way through it.

The key to good allegorous stories is subtlety and the story working without it. This was so bluntly bashed into you (At one point even having the word ABORTED thumped clumsily on the screen) that it left quite a sour taste, even if you agreed with it's agenda, or thought the farcial moon egg nonsense and non-existent moral dilema was an enjoyable story on it's own mert.

Other than the exchange between Clara & the Doctor, it was a useless episode.

Where did the Doctor disappear?! Was it ever explained or did he just randomly decide to leave them behind?

They're spending far too much time focusing on Clara...
which makes me think they'll kill her off. Or she'll 'die' and go to that heaven place only for Courtney to rescue her whilst the Doctor goes off somewhere.

Didn't he just go on the TARDIS and left them to make the decision?

Yep, but it seems an unnatural thing for him to do. If he's not making the decision, I would expect him to at least stay there, instead he just took the Tardis and ran off. It was a random choice for him to make, imo.

I think it would have been very unnatural for Smith to have done it, not so much with this Doctor though, he's more secretive/manipulative than we've seen for a while.

As you say though:
It looks as though they're building towards a Clara exit motivated by how different the Doctor has become to the Smith version she enjoyed so much. Can't see Moffat killing her off properly, he never does that to main characters.

He doesn't swear anywhere near enough for my liking. You don't rope Malcolm Tucker into a role then have him acting like a flamboyant agony aunt.

Best episode in the series so far. Wasn't childish and had that intensity and grittiness.

For me that was the best EP so far, right until he knew how to stop the mummy, that was just pants.
Beginning to like this Doctor, I can see a sinister side to him.
Same as you, I saw 10mins left and rolled my eyes knowing it was going to be wrapped up. Good episode though.

I think Doctor Who has had that problem for a while now. The whole "figuring out how to win the battle in 0.2 seconds" thing. It's always felt a bit "oh shit, we have to end the episode soon, um...The Doctor wins because...reasons..." to me.

Urghh. Close to giving up on this. Another really good idea just pissed up the wall.

I am starting to really like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but just like with Matt Smith, the scripts he's having to work with are awful.

Enjoyed that episode.

I wonder if he actually managed to save everyone or just Clara? Thought that was Capaldi's best performance of the season, it does help when they have a decent story.
