Television Doctor Who

Just coming to the end of my marathon Dr Who rewatch, while I do like Matt Smith as the Doctor and he does have some very good EP's, I have to say that he also has some of the poorest ones, some I just hated.

Going to have a rewatch of the spin-off Torchwood after his, I have this thing for Gwen.

Just started watching this myself, its all right I suppose. Currently coming to the end of season 1.

This week's episode was terrible.

Next week looks like it might be good.

Haven't watched it since Peter Davidson, watched about 20 mins of tonight, and it's absolute horse shire to put it politely.

Today's episode was the best so far, but that's not really saying much since the other episodes have been quite poor.

Tonight's episode summed up everything that lets Doctor Who down now. Start off with a really good idea, build it up slowly, reach a point about 35 minutes in and realise that there is only 10 minutes left, and rush an ending. Its constantly happening.

The first half an hour or so was really good today, but then they just had a really crap ending that let the whole thing down, and blew a really potentially fantastic episode. I wish they'd either stop having these deep, complex episodes that can't be crammed into 45 minute shows, and just keep it simple. Or just make each episode an hour long so that they don't have to keep rushing the endings. Rant over/

Or go back to the cliff hanger ending that each episode used to have prior to 2005.

A single story used to last for at least two episodes back in the sylvester McCoy era (back when I was a young boy).

By tonight's episode, do you mean the Robin Hood one? That was rather unimaginative.
Capaldi is underused. He's the star so give him more lines and scenes.

From the little I saw of last night's, I weirdly wasn't impressed with Capaldi. He does angy and shouty and comic assides well, but he hasn't got a lot of charm for the more straight or dramatic stuff. I think he's probably slightly overrated as an actor. His age grants him gravitas, but for a man near 60 to be mostly famous for a sitcom role, and relatiely recent one, doesn't say alot for his chops. I genuinely felt Smith would've been better in some of the scenes.

Though I did like Capadli in some of the earlier stuff. This was the first time where I felt he was a bit weak. The actual ep bored me a bit. But then I was only half paying attention.

Not only that but once again, the episode was resolved with a paradox. It's just beyond lazy.

The writing for this show has been below-par since Matt Smith became The Doctor. Too many cheesey lines and stuff, as well as the overall writing. Still entertaining but not as good as it could be.

If you missed Ecclestone's series (the only one he did) then you won't understand or enjoy Dr Who anymore. The Time War is the new Dr.

But I agree with you on some horseshire bits. The previous doctors' assistants did nothing more than offer easy hostage material or eye candy. Nowadays we have to watch each and every one's f*cking love interest in great detail (mostly with the Doctor) and its painful Twilight-esque viewing. Wish they would just concentrate on the timewimey stuff.

Yeah, Moffat's reign has been crap. I don't if it's because it's coincided with me becoming somewhat grown up, but I find it very childish.

I was being literal, I hadn't watched it since Peter Davidson days, and didn't catch the Ecclestone series. Explains a lot pal.

Yep. They have what, 12 episodes per series? They could have 3 or 4 double episodes for the complex plots, then 4 or 5 more simple episodes that don't need the extra time. Right now, cramming everything into 45 minutes just doesn't work.

Aye. No one saw that one coming :wenger:

Yep, my thoughts too.

Same here. I like the Capaldi as the Doctor and Clara is very likeable IMO but I'm just not getting into the stories as much as I used to. Maybe I've been spoilt watching the darker, gritty and intense episodes such as the weeping angels and the library episode but the new ones do seem to hit a younger audience.

Had a marathon Tom Baker weekend - Genesis of the Daleks, City of Death, Brain of Morbius and Talons of Weing Chiang.

Watch any of the above, and you'll realise what a joke the franchise has become.

I cant watch any of the old one, I think they are just terrible.
I did watch them when I was a kid but IMHO they have not dated very well.

Now that was a proper episode! Best of the series by far.

Defiantly reminded me of Hustle too  @Scrumpet

I just watched the Magic School Bus Inside A Dalek episode and I'm ready to give up on this season. Also, the "Missy" snippets don't intrigue me at all.

Really did not enjoy that. This season has been a real bore so far, Capaldi isn't as impressive as I had expected and the stories have been crap.

I've enjoyed his portrayal in the first couple of episodes, but he hasn't been helped by the writing so far. Which is I felt about Matt Smith in his final season and a half, I was just hoping things would change.

Tbf, nothing typifies "in my day" revisionism like Dr bloody Who. It's always as daft as a brush, and frequently awful, but everyone pretends - very seriously - that it's getting worse and worse, and nowhere near as good as it was when they really liked it. T'was always and T'will continue to be the way for many day to come.

I watched City of Death on US Netflix quite recently. It ends with the companion punching the villan in the face and running away. Daft. As. A. fecking. Brush.

Am I the only one who likes this series then? I really enjoyed the Dalek episode and this one was good too.
Mind you, I've always been a fan of escapism in tv shows. I tend to like Supernatural, Arrow, Doctor Who etc more than shows that would relate to real life, like crime shows or dramas.

I dont hate it, but for me it has been very weak so far.

Another disappointing episode. I didn't care much for the robot thing and I'm not sure if the Doctor remembered the boyfriend was the same guy from the earlier future episode or not. I find Clara's boyfriend annoying.
