 D'oh

well they don't usually refer to him as just Owen, my bad

All newspaper bollox anyway, I reckon, as as it stands at the moment, there is no need to omit anyone from the 25-man squad, as we only have 25 players older than 21.

I see marchi91 is on another crusade against Berbatov, despite the man having a very good pre-season thus far. Better than Chicarito in any case.

Eh?

Hernandez has played one game and scored. How is it you arrive at this conclusion that Berbatov is having a better pre-season?

For a player that is suppose to play in the hole, Berbatov does a very shite job at it. He was purchased to be a goal poacher, not to play in the hole. I'd rather have Park who play's quite well in that position then Berbatov at the moment given his performance during the world cup and previous games in that position. Anderson is another that would arguably be better in that position then Berbatov. The former doesn't have a great long pass but his ball control movement and short to medium passing is every bit as good, if not better then Berbatovs.

Rightey-Ho.

I love posters who only see what they want to see.

do you think Hargrevs will play any decent number of matches this season though?

I've never seen a case quite like his, I'd actually be pondering releasing him at this point

Berbatov had a better game v Celtic, scoring a brilliant goal and assisting the other two. Then he played against Kansas where he scored again. Despite us losing that match he was one of our better players.

It's not a put down on Hernandez, he took his goal very well and could have had a couple more. He had an excellent half hour but that was it.

We're all getting a little bit ahead of ourselves.

No, I think Hargreaves is finished.

No point releasing him though, better to keep him for the season in the hope that he will recover and manage to contribute.

Half an hour. That's the point. Unfair to judge them against one another given his limited involvement, which makes you sound like a Berbatov apologist.

this may sound like a dumb question, but we have been paying his wages every week these last few years, correct?

Well, unless the accounts department are doing something wrong, I would guess so.

No, march-91 said if Chicharito continued the way he is then it's adios Berba. Which is nonsense, considering he only played half an hour in a game we were very comfortable in.

Nonsense it may well be, but so is proclaiming Berbatov's pre-season much better than Hernandez's.

It has been!

Although if you took off sick tomorrow in a real job, your employer would cut your wages in half within a few weeks and rarely end up paying you anything after 6 months or more out.

Company sick pay rights : Directgov - Employment

I would assume that players with long-term injuries have a reduction in wages the longer the injury goes on? Paying them their full wage seems a silly waste of money, surely clubs would protect themselves.

Footballers are different though, seeing as the injuries comes from doing the job.

And I am sure it's something in the contracts that protects the players in terms of injuries.

Absolutely. I was just being pedantic about Elvis' analogy.

Like the link says, employers can define their own sick pay arrangements and I doubt any player would sign for a club that docks wages if they get a long-term injury. Which is fair enough, seeing as their earnings take place over a much shorter space of time than us "civilians".

well there's nothing he can do about that Right Now

It's pre-season so let us focus on that, and he's done a good job so far, give credit where it is due

I agree he's had a good pre season, but that doesn't cut the mustard. He isn't like Nani and Anderson who are still growing into themselves. He is a player in the prime of his career. My bet is he'll probably stay for atleast the first half of the season, but if he fails, then he'll be off in January.

I'll take that bet

No chance. When has Sir Alex ever sold a first team player in the middle of the season?

Lay off him. He is a quality forward who deserves a little bit more support from us. You do realize that the fact he has struggled may not be entirely down to him alone. Take a long and hard look at his style of play and the ball retention capabilities of our midfield.

You are probably the first person I've read that has described Berba's purchase as being motivated as a goal poacher. But, okay.

Nothing wrong with thinking Park might be a better option as hole player but, Park isn't a striker. Plainly put, when SAF wants to play 2 strikers - his option right now is to play Berbatov along side any of Rooney/Chichartio/Owen/Macheda.

Unless as he said he finds some way of doing things different - it doesn't look like Berbatov's position is in any danger from him yet.

In the event Rooney is out for a big game where we go with our one striker formation - Berbatov is probably the striker that SAF will learn towards. Hernandez has shown that he plays well in an open game but, we've not really seen him play when he is playing lone striker battling 2 PL or even CL level center backs. Closest we saw was him trying to do it against England and he really was being man handled.

Obviously that could all change if SAF finds a way to play Rooney and Hernandez.

Understand the desperation of finding a reason to think finally there may be enough where they'll sell the flop off and move on but, if looking at Hernandez and thinking he is going to force that to happen - that's all it is - desperation.
