what? i can't stand him, i hate watching a United game when he's involved. not my cup of tea. i prefer more direct strikers.

Plain and simple - in the new season and any match Berba plays in, just don't watch it then. It's a sad state of affairs when your dislike for a player resorts you to hate watching the team you support.

When he's on song, he's a brilliant player to watch. Flambuoyant, creative, unselfish and intelligent. I stress 'when he's on song' and that's the problem really.

I was reading Jonathan Wilson on the Guardian about Germany and he said though they scored lots of goals they were essentially a defensive unit. When they scored the first goal early teams would push forward too much leaving Germany to hit them on quick counters which they excelled. Yet when the other team scored early they did not have the game plan or setup to deal with that.

It's why I think susbcribing to any one way of playing can be dangerous and perhaps SAF has realised that and changes things around?

Agreed. They walloped some teams because they got the opportunity to play on the counter but looked pretty average otherwise. They never looked like breaking Spain and in the 3rd place playoff they looked lost once the score went level, it was only very poor goalkeeping that got them back in it.

As for Berbatov, yes he does provide a good option to play differently and is quite useful for certain games. He simply can't be relied upon when Rooney is out, which is what really disappointed during the run-in. It was very frustrating to watch, but I guess the problem is not him but the lack of a realistic alternative when losing Wayne.

I completely agree.

I am readuy to give him another chance, if from his performance vs Celtic he can kick off, I think he could come more than good next season.

Hopefully.

Although he's not done as well as I'd hoped, I still like Berbatov and am very happy to have him at United. He's got so much in his locker that you just can't write him off like so many have done. But I am slightly worried about the goodwill he's created with a good performance in a pre-season friendly against a poor Celtic. I'd rather he continued to be an underdog than everyone suddenly expecting him to become a great player for us this upcoming season. Build up, tear down. Tiresome stuff. Optimism isn't for everyone, not all have the mental characteristics to handle disappointment.

Yeah even as a person that supports Berbatov - taking that as a one off game and just put out there - lets hope that is signs of things to come this season.

Most curious for me was the team setup - it's almost like they went in with the plan to look at different way to play when Rooney is out and Berbatov is his replacement. Not the 2 traditional wingers but, 3 forward players interchaning with Diouf or Berbatov taking up central positions and the winger showing up on either flank.

Instead of trying to push Berbatov into Rooney's role and play the same system when Rooney is out the team, go with a system that is suited more to the personnel we have. It's actually a system that Rooney would excel at as well - similar to the 3 pronged attack of Rooney/Ronaldo/that other guy.

Could just be something to do with the fact that Nani (injured), Valencia (injured) and Park (holiday) were absent from the team. That left only Giggs as a recognised winger.

omg

1 good preseason game against the weakest Celtic team in years and people get their knickers twisted again.

i wish other players (like Nani some 12 months ago) were shown this sort of trust

Obertan and Cleverly are and when Welbeck has played first team, that's where he has played.

Anyway, it's an observation of just playing differently - could be reading into wh and it just being a personnel thing.

Time to bump this up, I think.

Had a decent few matches. Scored goals, good performances. His class was apparent in last few matches. It was especially pleasing to see posters acknowledge that he worked hard against the Wizards. A bit of a break from the usual "Lazy" comments.

It would definitely be a boost to our chances if he continues to impress this sseason.

We all know that it's only pre-season, but he has done well and deserves credit for that. Hopefully he can keep this form up, beginning against Newcastle. As always, i have faith.

He was poor I felt last nite - against Celtic he looked very good - lively and in the middle of all things good - last nite he went missing a lot though - it's typical of him i suppose - we need a lot more from him next season if we are to succeed

:(

Seein that the entire team was shit and he was one of the better peformers in an overall crappy match....

The entire team didn't shine really. I thought that the service from midfield to the forwards in general was lacking. Anyway, it is a preaseason game, with the goal to give all players a chance to play and iron out all the kinks.

Well, I am done getting my hopes up (it is only preseason). I will just wait, come the start of the season and hope (& pray) that he starts performing more consistently (especially agianst the big teams) - for his sake and more importantly, for the good of our team.

Come on Dimitar!

thats fair enough

we did look much better with welbeck on towards the end and oberton looked dangerous - thought scholes was decent - giggs not too bad

i expect more from berbatov though - as much as i'd love it to happen i think we are kidding ourselves if we think he is going to change dramatically over the summer into a different player

Only the people that want Berbatov to be someone he isn't want a dramatic change.

His first season people complained he didn't put enough effort in and was lazy. Last season he showed an improvement for effort and desire on the pitch and even played more in the box but, his finishing was off for whatever reason.

The main criticism people leveled at him then was he can't finish or doesn't take enough shots at goal as a striker. Well so far in pre-season we've seen him do just that.

His critics say he is not much better than some of the youngsters, if we are in a transitional period, then bed the youngsters and sell off Berbatov but, again the games so far have shown that Berbatov is in a completely different class and that our phenoms are not quite there yet to play day in and day out for us.

I think him and Diouf have shown the most promise as a pairing. Welbeck has as well but, not played with anyone but, Macheda as strike partner. It will be interesting to see if perhaps Berbatov/Hernandez play together either in Houston or Mexico - that could be a good partnership. However, the good thing is with as lively as Berbatov has looked so far - when he partners with Rooney - they'll be even more effective if he keeps up these kinds of performances/energy levels.

Lastly - a change that I noticed from the Celtic game to Philly/1st half of Wizards game (haven't watched second half yet) - is that Berbatov wasn't as quick to moan. He even was doing the clap thing appreciating the effort of some of the passes. Thought it was interesting.

Encouraging perhaps, but that's hardly a rousing defence of a player who's been at the club two full seasons now

Always beware putting too much stock in pre season

Thing is had he been utter crap in pre-season, some would have easily taken license to say that a player that has been here 2 years is 29 years old shouldn't be having poor pre-seasons. That it would be okay for a younger player to have a bad pre-season.

You take pre-season with a grain of salt but, at the same time you can take some things from it.

I don't know if any of the comments about him looking slimmer and fitter are based on fact or it's just a matter of him looking more into things so far. Irregardless - that he is looking more up for it is a positive to take into the season. That is unless you prefer to go into the season with negative thoughts and hope to be surprised.

Dimitar Berbatov's brother kidnapped by gangsters over gambling debts?

Badfellas

Thu, 29/07/2010 - 10:08 By Ollie Irish

Dimitar Berbatov's younger brother Asen, who lives in his native Bulgaria, has disappeared. If you've seen him, drop us a line. He looks a bit like Dimitar but with a goatee and crewcut.

By many accounts, Asen labours under the illusion that he's some sort of gangster - it's alleged he's well into cocaine and gambling, and he likes to wear black leather jackets. Dangerous.

According to the Sun, "Asen, 23, is believed to have run up business debts at a boutique he runs with wife Mimi. Three months ago armed police stormed his home and seized computers and documents in connection with an alleged credit card and ATM fraud linked to the fashion store."

Asen's family has yet to report him missing, even though he hasn't been seen for more than a month. Putting some numbers together, it's possible that he's been snatched by angry gangster types over non-payment of gambling debts. In which case it could be up to wealthy Dimitar to bail him out.

They love kidnapping in Bulgaria.. wasn't it Kaladze that never sin his brother for like 6 years?!!

I'll tell you Berba is no conformist. Good ammo for his detractors but, when the team went for the trophy pic - he was the only one not down to his Red United shirt - was still wearing white warm up.

Well Brown had a MLS shirt on with whoever he exchanged and Sheasy was in his underarmour shirt because he had exchanged with a MLS player as well.

Just funny considering that Philly team pic at top of Rocky steps he wasn't wearing the team "uniform" and doing his own thing

Sorry just watched the game again (was hoping to catch self on tv - guess not) and then noticed the rebel.

If Hernandez can deliver for the remainder of pre season then I feel its adios Dimitar.

5 strikers is a considerable amount and if our two reserves in Owen and Hernendez can deliver as well if not better then Berbatov, then whats the point??? You don't pay a player 100k a week to be outshone by a "crocked has been" and a 21 year old.

If you read the Hernandez thread - you might have seen the comments by SAF that he thinks Rooney and Hernandez are very similar so will be difficult to play them together unless they change some things.

Same thing was said about Owen last season, so Owen didn't find him play instead of Berbatov.

With Rooney scoring like he did last season, unlikely he'll be moved back in the hole and he is pretty much the only one that can take the hole striker role from Berbatov.

Berbatov is not going anywhere for a while regardless of how well Chichartio does. If anyone might find himself out of a job, it may be Owen.

For a player that is suppose to play in the hole, Berbatov does a very shite job at it. He was purchased to be a goal poacher, not to play in the hole. I'd rather have Park who play's quite well in that position then Berbatov at the moment given his performance during the world cup and previous games in that position. Anderson is another that would arguably be better in that position then Berbatov. The former doesn't have a great long pass but his ball control movement and short to medium passing is every bit as good, if not better then Berbatovs.

Was he?

And if so why would SAF not play him right up top?

I see marchi91 is on another crusade against Berbatov, despite the man having a very good pre-season thus far. Better than Chicarito in any case.

Sorry, has someone been "outshone" without any of the rest of us realising?

Or are you sharing your strange fantasy world with the caf? Please don't.

I'm not sure Berbatov has been conclusively better than Hernandez (feck it, both Hernandez and Chicharito are a lot of typing, we need a new nickname) tbh. The Mexican lad has only played 45 minutes and was very very good. Berbatov has been good in spells but has been off the pace at times too (like most of our squad)

They're both completely different anyway. I don't really see them competing for places. It's Owen who will be most affected by the new arrival.
