Well done Berbatov. He's been on the bench a fair bit lately, but he's shown how important he is with his goal today.

It wasn't a pretty goal by any means, but it went in and that's the main thing. Hopefully it'll give him confidence too.

Even though he's spent time on the bench lately, he's got 21 goals so far this season and is the main reason why we're top of the league.

Why would you disagree with that, he's 29years old and shouldn't need an arm around him when left out.

Hardly a child is he?

There's not really any need to get into this, but Ruud didn't like being dropped and he was no child, Rooney certainly wouldn't take well to being left on the bench - players tend not to like being dropped when they're playing well, age doesn't come into it. But lets move on - he got a full half, he got a goal, we got 3 points, Arsenal got 1, I'm in no mood for arguing!

I think Bolton had done their homework with the Rooney and Hernandez combination and got vital interceptions in a good 4 or 5 times when they tried to play one twos and set each other away. Something that had worked well against the previous teams with this combination.

Berbatov was more willing to hold onto the ball and wait for support to arrive before laying the ball off safer than that quick interplay that Bolton were defending well against

Maybe but the improvement was noticeable within minutes of the re-start. Doubt they got jaded that early.

I agree that he had a bigger effect and impact, but the last thirty was when we really started to put pressure on, and that was primarily down to Bolton being unable to keep pace.

Vidic is arguably the best cb in the world, Rooney isn't even in the top three strikers in the world.

There is a difference between being an important player and being the best one.

Vidic is an important player, but are you really suggesting he is better than Nani or Rooney?

Nani has to be considered our best player overall this season. He has scored goals, created goals and regularly been our biggest threat and game changer, and he proved it again today.

Goal aside, our second half team performance was vastly superior to our first. Coincidence?

Nope.

SAF kick up the ass - we have done this a few times - better in the second hlaf and also Taylor missed a free header.

Nani and valencia swapping wings at the end helped.

Thing is - did we miss SAF on the touchline and his influence at half time was felt?

I agree - our attackers stepped up their performances in the second half. I do think that Berbatov holds on to the ball better than Chicharito. Both players have their unique strengths and weaknesses - I'm sure it's not a selection headache Fergie is particularly worried about.

I don't think its a coincidence we were better in the second half - Berbatov was brought on because he is better at holding it up than Hernandez and was less likely to get bullied off it by Cahill and co - these were important attributes at the time because it became apparent we were going to spend the rest of the game camped in the Bolton half (which we went on to do).

Very happy for him. 20 goals this season has seemed to shut up most of the doubters. I'm sure that if he played in the last few games, and plays a majority of the rest of the season he'd be able to reach 25-30 for the season. Good on him.

Berbatov, people say strikers are judged on goals...in that case, he is improving all the time.

1st season - 9 goals in 31 matches
last season - 12 goals in 33 matches
this season - 20 goals in 27 matches

21 goals overall, his career best is 26 a long long time ago.

...in a galaxy far far away?

First thing he did when he scored was look across at the linesman - despite the fact he was a good yard onside... he didn't have a clue. I rest my case. :)

Berbatov had been called offside about three times prior to that, he had to make sure. And strikers always think they have a clue, don't they.

I always look across to the linesman after every single goal we score ever since the Arsenal/Juventus games from 99!

Naturally, because none of us have a clue what the linesmen are going to flag for nowadays. He's obviously as alert to their inconsistencies as we are.

Nevertheless we scored a well needed goal, thanks to Berba, which has put us clear at the top of the table again. Increased our goals scored and goal difference too.

No wonder Fergie is successful. Apart from the obvious no-how, he also has the knack of throwing everyone into total confusion. When Tevez was (arguably) doing more than Berbatov, it was Tevez on the bench. And now in what might be his best season for us, it's Berbatov on the bench.

*taps nose* You can almost see the wily old fox thinking out his master-plan to confuse and undermine the enemy.

15 games as a Substitute I believe it was, or 16. However, he did score as a Substitute against Chelsea in the Community Shield this season.

Guess it depends how long you're on as sub for. 15 games might actually equate to 180 minutes, might be much more, especially if he's been on at half time a few times. I seem to remember him coming on as sub within a few minutes one game when Tevez went off injured?

Nice to think your subs come on and make an impact though. And there's no bigger impact than scoring a goal. Hopefully if he does spend a bit more time on the bench, he'll carry this threat

I have to admit that I do sometimes think our style of football is too direct to really suit Berbatov's attributes. He should really be playing for a tika taka side, I honestly think he'd slot into Barca's team beautifully.

Think he'd be a bit too static for a Barca side.

Can't help but notice there's someone missing from this thread that usually makes an overnight appearance...

Ibrahimovic is similar in ways to Berbatov in terms of style and he did not exactly set the world alight at Barcelona.

Every Barcelona player works very very hard and closes down and switches roles at will. I honestly cannot see how you have come to that conclusion.

It gave me a bit of a laugh though.

And saying its the way we play that hinders Berbatov at times is ridiculos too. Dont forget he has done very well earlier in the season and suited our system just fine

He held the ball up better than Hernandez, which helped us retain possession better in the opposition half.

Never said Berbatov wasnt better at it but tbh I think in the second half our whole team much more gave it a go than in the first. We have done it in the past as well to make teams tired in the first half and get real going in the second.

Don't get me wrong Berbatov didnt have a good game or made an impact (well of course he had, he scored the winning goal) but it might have been down to tactics or Fergie that we started playing better in the second.
