Lloris isn't that good - especially when you consider we'll probably pay more for him than we sell DDG for.
Considering we made more backpasses to the goalie than any other team in the league, its clear LVG wants a ball-playing keeper and regrettably Cech isn't that, but Valdes is. We will have Valdes as #1 next season - definitely. I don't think it will be that disastrous, certainly a downgrade, but you don't play for Barca for however many years and be a complete clown.......

Based on what, One game against Hull?

That and because I doubt he's experienced that style of football on a consistent basis? I'm sure he will be able to adapt sooner than later though but are we in a position for "later?'

Lloris is prone to brainfarts too, especially when he decides to play sweeper. Cech would probably end up at Arsenal. I would go for Leno, the guy is a beast

I haven't seen any of Leno, what are his strengths? Think we can go one season with him understudying Valdes or would he want to play immediately?

Yeah I think so too.

Cech will stay in London I feel and aside from Spurs wanting too much for Lloris I don't think he's that much better than Valdez.

Id say he would expect to play straight away - that said I thought Ter Stengen would have more of a fuss about not being the outright No1 at Barca

Is Cech that bad with playing the ball?

On the contrary, I believe Valdes will be a disaster on long balls when the teams using them as a primary tactic make up for 65%-70% of our opponents in the Premier League. In Barcelona, he could sleep in goal with the way the players in front of him controlled the ball and considering how they don't play long balls in Spain. But even then, he made a number of goalkeeping howlers when called into action.

Why is valdes so poorly rated ? He must be decent if he's played for Barcelona and won a bucket load of trophys???
Is there something I'm missing here ?

Yes the fact he was rated as the poorest player from that team by their own fans nonetheless.

The general opinion on Barca always has been that they have a magnificent team but with a rather poor defence (which they don't really need because usually they have 70% ball possession on the other half of the pitch). Valdes especially was rated as a poor player by many, good reflexes and good feet but very prone to having colossal brainfarts that end up costing goals. Also he is not a youngster anymore, he won't improve on this area of his game as he is already 30+. Considering we are not Barca and how many times we have needed secure hands in the goal to prevent feck-ups from our defenders going in the goal many feel that Valdes in the goal is going to be an accident waiting to happen.

30+ is still very young for a professional GK.

I just think that spending a buttload of money for a new GK is silly when the club has Valdes. Just my 2 cents.
Valdes needs competition.

It would be unhealthy to sell de Gea and give the number 1 jersey to him. We don't have any goalkeepers who would be good enough to compete with him.

Cech
Valdes
Lloris

But I guess we will see how Valdes handles the pre season..

O I agree he can continue to playing till his late thirties so atleast another good 7-8 years left in him if he wants to.

But at this stage he is not going to change anymore as a goalkeeper. He has always been very prone for making stupid errors that you just can't explain and he'll continue doing that for the rest of his career. That for me is the most important reason I don't see Valdes being a success in the PL as a number 1 goalkeeper.

If he were 20 I'd say it is a working point for him and that it can be trained out (bit like how DDG was in his first few seasons at us) but for a 30 year old player I say that ship has sailed, left the harbor and is never coming back.

I don't think Petr Cech would cost a buttload of money.

But I agree spending a lot for the GK is silly and it is the primary reason I'am not a big fan of the other options out there like Lloris etc.

Think we'll get Lloris. Have seen a lot of him live and not convinced. Would have been under greater scrutiny if at a bigger club. My only hope is, if it is him, move to a bigger club makes him up his game and liven up.

Is Cech that bad with playing the ball?

He has always looked very gangly and uncomfortable using his feet whenever I've seen him. LVG seems to use the keeper as an 11th outfield player at times and I worry that Cech will not be up to it.
I don't particularly like the tactic and would rather the main criteria for choosing a keeper would be that he could, you know, stop the ball going in his net........

Cech for me is top dog. Plenty of years left at that age as a keeper.
And no doubt available, just will take a bit of pressure from Cech, and an above value fee from us.

I suspect Mourinho would prefer to sell to us than Wenger!

I'm sure someone influential has already said he WON'T be the 1st choice. Can't for the life of me remember who that was though.

Time will tell though.

I wouldn't be overly surprised to see us go for Begovic. I think it's reasonably assumed he won't sign a new contract at Stoke with only a year left (thus available at cut-price) and that they started preparing for life without him by going with Butland for a couple of games at the end of last season.

Won't be overly excited about it, but it does make sense.

1) Cheap
2) Premier league proven
3) Right age
4) Despite being good, he will probably never become world class, and will be happy to stay at United as long as we want
5) Has been living in England for a long time, and seems content

A name like Leno, Navas or Summer sounds more exciting, but right now I'd rather just get someone decent who can do a good job for us.

Number 4 is a damn shame for a big club

Not exactly, look at Valdes.

In the sense of a big team being afraid to lose its world class/best players. Valdes gave Barca many years of service so im not sure we can place him in this category.

Valdes was loyal and consistent, not exactly World class but not average either, wasn't necessarily in the top 3 conversation, that's the kind of keeper we should aim to sign imo.

Can't think of any mistake de Gea's made that approach those. Worst off the top of my head are the Dzeko goal in his first match and the collision with Vidic. Some nerves at other times but am I forgetting any outright clangers?

Sunderland Capital one cup semi final, I was disgusted.

West Brom on his competitive debut was poor.

Wasn't there
Ah yes, good call. I could only follow the text for that one, fortunately.

Wasn't there one v Southampton too at old Trafford in their first season back in PL? He came out for a clearance and basically bottled it and they scored?

And you expect us to challenge for the European Cup with him in goal even if he has better defenders ahead of him? It took us Schmeichel and Van der Sar in goal, arguably the best goalkeepers of their respective times, to win the Champions League, you know. So I'm not really sure about our chances if we have a goalkeeper who is not top class.

Cech is our best option. The GK coach Frank Hoek will make him awesome.

I would go with that.

Real Madrid won it last year with Casillas in goal...
Barcelona will probably win it this year with Ter Stergen (who is good but certainly not top 3)
Bayern and Chelsea did have Neuer + Cech (but Dortmund did make it with Weidenfeller)
But 2011 ( :( ) Barcelona had... yes you called it.. Victor Valdes.

So what? Is there something wrong in looking for someone with enough talent/potential to become Top 3? What's the disadvantage?

After we saw what Schmeichel and Van der Sar did for us, I was expecting more United fans to give a lot more importance about the goalkeeper as part of the difference between success and nowhere.
