Doesn't seem big enough for the league. Will need to be stronger coming to get the ball but doesn't have the height of De Gea, De Gea was young so we nurtured him, how much more can you teach Valdes. Barcelona kept the ball so well he was almost a passenger every game we don't possess such qualities, but he could be our no 1 if we had a a stronger defence and wasn't relied upon almost every game like De Gea was this season.
Had an ACL surgery and barely played in a year... Like Falcao, you never know how they'll recover.
I know de gea is a fantastic keeper but how much of his rise is due to frans hoek ??
He is rarely mentioned on this forum and could get valdes back up to his pre acl op condition !

He just came off of a major injury, also, have you ever seen him play? He isn't nearly as good as de Gea and he's prone to Ben Foster levels of momentary lapse of reason.

Of course I've seem him play otherwise I wouldn't of said it the first place you clown

Pre-injury Valdes probably still isn't too good a fit for the Premier League, unless he can significantly improve on his handling of crosses and high balls into the box. We saw a major improvement in de Gea's command and presence over the years, not just from Hoek's coaching. I fear Valdes is at a stage in his career now that he won't improve as a player.

Fair point !
I still think he will get first shot at it when big dave goes !

Valdes will be dodgy as feck against the highballs. Doubt he'd experienced much of that when playing for Barca in La Liga. I'd be more comfortable with Lloris and then Cech.

Based on what, One game against Hull?

I would love us to sign a formidable keeper who could command the area and claim crosses instead of leaving the defenders to compete aerially. Seeing as we have to deal with a huge amount of aerial balls from some of the less creative teams in the Premiership, that should be our number one priority.

Look here, I wasn't calling you names. What I was doing was pointing out that not everyone sees what you see in Valdes, and not everyone is comfortable with him being named our new No.1 keeper if/when de Gea leaves.

With inevitable changes at the back, the need to start next season well both because of the CL qualifying and the possibility of challenging for the league, we need as few question marks as possible. No signing is a guaranteed success, but there are obvious doubts over Valdes and at the very least he'll need time to adjust, settle in and be able to handle the physical nature of the Premier League and the crosses.

Can we afford that? Do we want that? That's why I'm against making him first choice and also against going for another project like Leno. I'll happily settle for a safe pair of PL experienced hands like Cech or Lloris.

Do everything possible to make him stay, knowing that valdes can take the no.1 if he does leave.

The irony if we end up buying Lloris for 30m and we only get 17m for DDG.

Cech is probably much cheaper but he is older and Lloris is better in the sweeper role.

While I get your point our possession stats last season were very impressive and wouldn't be far off barcelonas in most games .

Oh for a 6' 4" unit who could clean out everyone in claiming a cross...a young schmeichel would be amazing...(not Kasper, obviously)

Why is that people are rating Lloris? He did a poor job of his own a number of times at Spurs, including many goalkeeping howlers that cost goals. Even the majority of French Manchester United fans are not very keen on seeing him as our goalkeeper.

I wouldn't want him either. For me Leno is the obvious choice.

What's the point? If he wants to go to Real, let him go. He's done fantastic for us in his short time here and hasn't behaved badly or anything. You don't know the ins and outs of our contract negotiations so I wouldn't use that as a stick to beat him with. It doesn't seem to be a money thing, so no point keeping a player who really wants to play and live elsewhere.

I think there's plenty of points Ainu. The main one - us being pussy-whipped by a club that is a law onto itself. We're not a small club, with a small-club mentality & we shouldnt be gettin bitch-slapped by those Real pricks yet again.

We dont get the same bargains Real get (they got Kroos last summer for €20m ffs), so why should we allow them to get a bargain off us?!

They're lookin to pay around the same money for DDG, that we paid 4/5 years ago & DDG is 10 times the keeper he was then & would easily be worth upwards of £50m, maybe more..

We bought RvP at 29, for well over £20m - f*ck giving Real DDG for less than that.

"A player has all the power" (as LvG said, which done my head in) is just complete bollocks too. He contracted to us for another year - we have all the power. We can afford to take a hit next season, but who knows what will happen in that time either?!

So f*ck Real - make a stand & make him see out his contract!

The height talk wrt Valdes is kind of a cliche to be honest. 183 cm is a decent height for a goalkeeper, and more than enough to handle corners or set pieces once he gets more comfortable with the physical nature of the game. Shay Given for one, was what 2cm taller than Valdes ? And he was consistently one of the better keepers in the league. David Ospina is a similar 183 cm, and he has been one of the best in the league through the latter half of the season.

Plus Valdes is an excellent athlete, with a real spring in his leap :

Hoek can help refine his cross-collection technique a bit, once he brushes off the rust and gets accustomed to opposition players ramming into him on every occasion, he'll be just fine. Sure, he'll be tested to his limits through the first couple of months of regular playing time (if it comes to that), but Valdes has always been a very scrappy and driven player mentally, so he won't exactly shirk from a new challenge.

The only worrying part is the state of his body, has he recovered fully ? And how he'll hold up (especially his knee) through the course of a rigorous 50+ match season including the Champions League, and the odd domestic cup appearance. A lot of really good keepers have regressed prematurely towards their early to mid 30s in recent seasons because of fitness related issues (Casillas, Cech, even Buffon when compared with their prime) so that's a bit of a concern.

If we don't sign a top replacement for De Gea and pen Valdes down as a starter, it'd be wise to target a quality young understudy who can develop slowly and step up into starting XI as and when required.

Lloris is prone to brainfarts too, especially when he decides to play sweeper. Cech would probably end up at Arsenal. I would go for Leno, the guy is a beast

Was Ospina that bad? Anyway, I'm not sure it would fit anybody to have a ménage à trois of goalkeepers in a team.

Cech or Leno for me. Would not be opposed to giving a chance to Lindegaard either. I know he has been backup all this time, but he played very well when he was given chances.

The lack of chances given to Lindegaard would seem to indicate that LVG does not rate him. I can't see why Valdes would have come to United to spend so much time on the bench, unless he had been lead to believe that he would become first choice if DDG left.

Cech is a no brainer and surely available for less than 20 million given his squad status and age

We've done well when you consider over the last 25 years we've had big Pete, Edwin and DDG who were the best or in a small group of the best keepers in the World - 2000-2006 aside we've brought in the right keeper so here's hoping we keep that tradition

Leno would be great, highly talented and could learn a lot under Valdes. Cech would be a safe, immediate solution for the next 2-3 years though

Ter Stegen is a clown

Because he's made big mistakes in the past? He's probably the most talented goalkeeper next to De Gea and Courtois. Schmeichel's start to his United career wasn't glorious either.

The confusion of him staying or not is affecting our search for the new GK. If it is confirmed that he's leaving, then Utd have to have a list ready of long term and short term options. And the replacements will not come cheap. The clubs will know the desperate situation we are in and extract their pound of flesh.

Cech is a good keeper but has not played very often. I like Lloris but last season he was not at his best. And I have no clue if there are any up-coming keepers who may be future greats (la Courtoius/De Gea).

It'll be a long summer.

Tbh I think internally it's clearly already done. The refusal to publicise things may well be on our part as goalkeeping targets will see their price increase upon the news of DDG's departure officially breaking.

Hoek has already coached Valdes under Van Gaal at Barcelona.

De Gea's rise to be a dominant keeper aerially is more to do with Eric Steele and Chris Woods.

Hoek's role has been more into transforming De Gea into more of a sweeper keeper and getting him off his line quicker. Valdes was already excellent at these things.

We won't buy a new keeper.

Valdes is and always was De Geas replacement. Why can't people see that?

We don't want to see that because it's too terrifying a prospect. We really need to sort out all other areas of the pitch then if we want to get away with having Victor Valdes as our number one.

If that's the case, then we are SOOOO fecked. :wenger::mad:

Don't disagree with either of you.

One thing i would say, we've been so reliant on ddg this year (and last) simply because our defence had been so poor.

Sort the defence out, that's the main thing. Valdes will be ok and will bring some experience in cl games which is invaluable.

We should spend the next 12 months finding the next ddg. If we go seaching for a new number 1 now, we will get screwed by everyone who thinks we are desperate for a keeper, when we actually aren't.

*rocks back and forth*

*'its ok, valdes will be fine, we don't need a new number 1 yet'*

I must remind you and several others that we need a top class goalkeeper if we want to challenge on the European front. There is a reason why our best seasons in Europe were the ones when we had either Schmikes or Edwin in goal and regardless of who were the defenders in front of them. A top class goalkeeper is often the one who makes a huge difference in games where the score is tight, especially in Europe.

Even if we sort out our defensive woes, then what? That doesn't solve our problems of short number 1 goalkeeper. I have no trust whatsoever in Victor Valdes to survive in the Premier League if the play comes down to him. His short stature will destroy his short career in England as much as it destroyed Barthez's.

If Madrid are desperate to find a new number 1 in plain open sight, then I don't see why we wouldn't.

I must remind you

Oh, thanks.

Oh dear...

No, no, don't, ...you're losing it....

Ah! Damn, you were doing so well!

Well, you weren't. ;) but I get what you were trying to say. You may be right about Valdes, but at the end of the day he was definately bought a DDG's replacement. Were stuck with him

Right now, the only guy I want as DDG's replacement is Cech. Among long-term projects, the best shout in mind would be Leno. Otherwise, Lloris, Valdes, Begovic or anybody else is just another Taibi/Carroll in waiting.

He's completely changed his approach to the high ball this season. Radically different to 2013/14. Which can only be down to Hoek.
