Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

I can honestly say now that it’s so close I’ve got no confidence in us getting it done  It’ll be fun though, these tragic England nights are just a part of life aren’t they, something special about them.
I am not English but I've always thought this movie (An Evening with Gary Lineker) was a classic.

Personally very happy with the rumoured line-up. People saying Grealish should be in for Foden are understandable.

I can see England snatching this but Germany are still favourites in my eyes. This would be a great time for Kane to switch back to world class mode.

I watch english sports channels quite a lot and what you're saying is so far of the truth that not even the opposite is correct.

I don’t know where you get the impression from that we just say it’s coming home when we play Germany, it has nothing at all to do with Germany

English people and their weird obsession with Germans part 2000

We're two sides of the same coin. It's weird being in Germany. All that beer, pork and love of football is the same as us.

Even the Queen isn't really a Windsor, that would be Saxcoburg... Queen Victoria reportedly spoke with a German accent and it was her first language. Then there's the correspondence with the Kaiser...

The world could have been a very different place if we'd all just got along in 1914. Shame Bismarck and Queen Viccy didn't live long enough to stop it.

In football UK way more capitalist, though as we've seen with the super League, the German model has much to be admired. Just Bayern's dominance ruins the Bundesliga a bit.

It's a deeply culturally engrained rivalry.

If we going to be playing 343 to match Germany then under normal circumstances he really should be playing the 3 Chelsea lads who know the formation inside out. If only some bonkers tick box bureaucrat didn't insist that Mount and Chillwell have to isolate for 10 days. I would still play them both, but I doubt Gareth will risk it with them being out of training for so long.

I don't think it'll be too bad, everyone in that rumoured team has spent plenty of time in a similar system except Phillips and Foden.

Very nervous about this. I just can't see us getting through, but i'm incredibly pessimistic.

Hopefully i'm wrong. Start well and score early and it might ease the nerves and allow us to pick them off.

I'm fully expecting England to hit the post in the first 5-10 minutes as it appears to be written into our Euro 2020 contract that we must do that in every game.

England v Germany, Wemberly, Euro knockout and what to make this even more of a significant event...?

That's right

THE ENGLAND BAND ARE BACK

Foden isn't in the rumoured line up.

Their talisman nearly died. They STILL had to finish the game against Finland (a game they were dominating until the big incident).

Based on their level as a group of players minus their best player, a game against Czech and one of Eng/Ger/Ukr/Swe in the next round isn't easy on my opinion.

It's the absolutely easiest anyone could've got, and remember that they finished second in their group. Objectively, it's a really, really easy knockout opponent. Don't really think you can argue with it. Dunno what Eriksen has to do with any luck Denmark has with opponents though. Remember, they finished second in their group and got Wales. England won their group and got Germany, and the post I quoted said that England is lucky, which I responded to.

I guess your looking at the luck as in the draw whereas im looking at things beyond the draw.

In terms of draw, yes, Denmark have it easy. It's essentially like England in the last world cup.

In terms of other factors, Denmark have been unlucky (losing their best player and also having to finish that game when in reality, it should have been postponed).

I woke up this morning fairly pessimistic, bit I'm feeling a bit better now kick off is approaching.

Of course.

Question: do Germany and Argentina obsess over their rivalries with England as much as England do about these two teams?

I know Germany and Dutch have a big rivalry as do Argentina and Brazil.

Out in Whitby and there’s still some feckers marching round the harbour yelling “Ing-gur-land” amongst all the pensioners. No wonder we’re fecking hated everywhere

Sancho Grealish Saka

Bellingham Phillips

Shaw Maguire Stones James

Easy win

The Dutch? That's over, we are not in the seventies any more, there just were no important matches for decades now between Germany and the Netherlands.

Do we obsess about England? Nope, not at all. There is the ritual to mention the legendary "Wembley Goal" 1966 where it just is common German belief that it wasn't a goal and that Germany should have won the world cup, but apart from that there is just a vague feeling "yeah there is a lot of history" in regard to England, but frankly it's not like that was crucial history for Germany, England appears usually as a "also were beaten during the run to the final" in German football history, so there are just very few important moments for us.

We do care and sometimes obsess about Brazil and Italy I would say. Italy more as someone we fear, Brazil more as someone we admire for their beautiful game. But admittedly also that is not really true any longer... I don't remember my peers celebrating a semi final win as little as that tragic 7-1 in 2014, just should not have happened that way.

Argentina - absolutely, when we play them. Falklands sentiment is still a big driver there.

Germany - I think their total domination over England in any meaningful game since 1966 makes them find the rivalry a little bemusing. But my German friends are very much up for this one.

Argentina is more a political rivalry. It’s also less one sided.

The England Germany rivalry feels a lot like the United Leeds rivalry, it means a lot more to one than the other. They are still up for it though.

The predicted lineup is just depressing, given our attacking options. Screams of keep the shape and hold tight with a back 7 and hope to nick something on the counter or a set piece.

Even if we want to match them with a back 3/5, no need for it to be so negative...

I feel like England have a high chance of winning it in extra time simply because of their bench.

At least we will have options to change it if we need to chase the game. I can see where Southgate is coming from. It's not what I would choose but it's understandable, if a little dull and cowardly.

The English annoy so many people with their coming home stuff that I've started to greatly appreciate it.

Also doubt more than 10% of the people saying it actually mean or believe it.
You'd be surprised!

No. The only time we have a meltdown like you guys, is probably against Italy though.

Italy is basically for us what we are for you.

Interesting also that the English just say "Football is coming home" when the Germans come over. We are coming home, so what?
Eh? We say it every second of every day when a major tournament is going on, it's largely a jokey thing. No idea why you think it's only when the Germans are involved

I would have gone with Grealish and Sancho next to Kane. Rice and Bellingham in midfield. James as RWB and Walker as CB with Harry and Stones. Shaw LWB

Then from the bench you would still have Saka, Foden, Mount, Sterling, Rashford and DCL to change the game.

Southgate is far too negative and not making the most out of it. He is literally begging to lose.

Germany have won plenty of stuff.

I'm 46 years old and I've never seen my country win anything. For this reason, if Germany can just lay down for us tonight that'd be splendid. Thanks in advance

You're right there, when you're used to losing against the same team, naturally it becomes much bigger for the perennial losers.

It’s been a while since they did that.

Well, mainly because you've basically always been in our shadows.

Ooof, that's sexy. Would love to see that. You could even swap Mount in for Bellingham or Sancho/Grealish if you wanted a bit more stability.

Thats the closest thing we have to that kind of rivalry, yeah.

In general we don´t have that big lasting rivalry with a single country. It fluctates with the eras, ranging from the Dutch, the Argentinian or recently the Italians. Usually the nations that present the largest thorns in our sides and hurdles for success.

Funnily enough, I think we always had a pretty positive relationship with Brazil.

It's fine for the Germans to act all high and mighty and self righteous when it comes to the England rivalry. If we'd put them through what they have put us through over the years they'd soon change their tune. They normally need penalties to dispose of us anyway so hopefully we don't give them that opportunity tonight.

England has no real rivalry for Germany - won enough to not really bother and I‘d say bar Wembley there is a lack of iconic matches.
italy to me is the arc nemesis by far. England does not come close.

Maybe so! Its coming home, its your year!
