Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

I really like him, he's been good for Atalanto too hasn't he?

Honestly I have no clue. I don’t get to watch much Italian football so I had never heard of him prior to this tournament, but I really like him as well.

Seems like England are going with Kane , Sterling , Saka , Rice and Phillips as the front 5 . Interesting selection and I feel England definitely have the edge if the game is tight at the hour mark

That would be so underwhelming knowing you have Rashford, Sancho, Grealish etc.

Do any non-English peeps actually want to see it 'come home"?
I'd prefer England to win tonight because 1) the Germans knocked us out and 2) United players.

I wish the football they play wasn't so joyless though.

I have absolutely no trust in Löw. If Löw played a Bayern-style 4-2-3-1, mainly with Bayern players, I could see a wide open match, which could also be highly entertaining. If I had to go out, I preferred going out with flying colours. Kimmich could accelerate the game in the middle, but instead Löw will keep playing Kroos, the human form of a hand brake.

Ultimately he will play again his f... 3-5-1, which is honestly rather a 3-6-0. Then England only has to shut down the German flanks and I can see England winning 3:0 or higher. Löw's three at the back are a desaster waiting to happen, and Gosen on the left can't stop any of the English wingers. It's gonna be a desaster.

Under another manager this German squad could win it all, but not under Löw who is a manager of another era. He cannot even change his system once the ball is rolling...

He was breath of fresh air in 2006 world cup. He played great attacking foot ball but that was some 15 years ago.

Kroos has been very good dictating from deep. I have been very impressed with how Germany have kept the ball.

That's because teams allow them to keep the ball and don't put any pressure on the ball. They now Germany's weakness is there defense of counter attacks, especially due to Kroos and Gundogan, and therefore happily sit back and try to hit them on the counter.

Yes he is good for them. Chelsea linked with him before opted for chilwell. Leicester too after chelsea got chilwell. But he is more of attacking wingback than solid fullback.

I'd say 2010 was his peak, where he truly seemed ahead of a lot of his peers. Since 2016 at the latest it's just beating a dead horse. The team is severely dysfunctional and he doesn't seem to have any idea how to fix it. Wasted years. Should have given it to Flicksy after 2018.

I know, but did she ever cheer for Germany?

Imagine if the queen openly cheered for Germany, trying to process that would probably be like trying to divide by zero for the Brexit half of the country.

There’s plenty of English people who don’t want it to come home

I think most neutrals don’t care. England maybe have a little more bad will then most nations with the “arrogant” stereotype (which our FA do their best to keep alive)

He was too loyal to players who won him world cup. Then disaster happened in euro 2016 and 2018. Then try to cut them off gave more problem than solution. Now bring three four players back from that. Not decisive enough I have to say.

14 goals in 2 games yesterday was nice & that, but I can’t wait for the resumption of Southgate-ball tonight. Love a good 0-0 with less than 3 total shots.

I do, love English football and its culture. A bit torn though, because I despise Southgate and his brand of football. Also the FA for appointing a dinosaur and yes man like him. The talent in the England squad is very high, even by International standards.

Müller and Hummels aren't the problem. If anything they are one of the few reliable players in that side and given the behavior of the rest of the CBs, thinking any of them could replace Hummels, even with his pace deficit, was a pipe dream.
The problem is that he's sacrificing a ton of defensive stability to play Kroos/Gündogan in midfield to fit his ideals of dominance, but he actually gets nothing to show for it out of that approach. The only way his side create danger is through wingback overloads, which is one of the most basic attacking patterns and thus also very easy to defend, by maintaining defensive width at all times.
I'd expect a coach to either find a way to add some edge to his attack, so he can at least claim to have found some compensation for Kroos' deficits or admit to himself that he can't and switch to an approach that's at least defensively solid. But Löw is the personified "this is fine" meme and just keeps on going the same path.

Well, we won't see the Kroos/Gündogan pairing tonight. I'm fairly optimistic regarding tonight's game. England looks better on paper than on the pitch, and they seem to be lacking leaders.
If we can avoid stupid goals from set pieces, we should have a pretty decent chance.

I don't know. It's just so easy to completely counter die Mannschaft, even Hungary could do it. And Southgate wouldn't even really have to change his approach a lot to play like them. On paper there is no reason to be optimistic. One has to rely on the English history of soiling themselves when it matters..

While I don't think Löw is a tactical genius, I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to get outsmart Southgate on this occasion. Question is if the England players will outperform their German counterparts.

You have nothing to worry about. England will do what England do. The Spurs of international football.

It sounds like we're starting with five defenders and two defensive midfielders. Southgate will have excelled himself if that's the case. Germany aren't even looking like one of the stronger teams, how many defenders would he put out there if we made it to a final against Italy or Belgium?

If it works tonight, of course I will say he did a great job, but if we go out playing negative boring football he should be sacked.

The group of death could have all the teams eliminated by the quarter finals. Worst group ever.

Seems like the XI will be:

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
Trippier Phillips Rice Shaw
Saka Kane Sterling

IMO England will win this. Playing in front of the home crowd will push them, right ? Sterling vs Kimmich is going to be a great battle. I expect Germany to control the midfield; much depends on the first goal. If England use a set piece to score then it will be very hard for Germany to turn this around. Go in front, park a bus, wait for Löw to bring Werner and Sane and kill the Germans with a counter. Will be interesting if Germany somehow manage to go in front.

Hummels is a problem. And it is not his lack of pace that make me afraid every time he steps for Germany on the field.
It is his lack of discipline as a central defender. He is too often hunting for glory tackles and winning balls, while leaving unannounced formation. He is the german version of brazilian Sideshow Bob.
And the other CBs than have to cover his gaps. And you can see it, that the others CBs rightfully don't trust him. Instead of playing in front of him (most central defender), they are in line with him or even a few steps behind him, to have a few steps to cover the open ground he leaves.
It is infuriating how he gets away with it time after time and undermines the essential trust and cohesion of our backline.

Agreed. Just can't see how Germany break England down. Didn't score vs France and struggled to beat Hungary. Portugal game was an anomaly. They just aren't very good.

You're describing Rüdiger actually.
