Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

Most likely Germany will keep their 3-4-2-1 formation, that is expected to look like:
----------------------- Gnabry ------------------------------
----------- Havertz ----------- Müller-------------------
Gosens -- Kroos ----- Goretzka ---- Kimmich
----- Rüdiger --- Hummels ----------- Ginter -----
------------------------ Neuer --------------------------------

So more or less back to the formation of the first two group games, just replacing Gündogan (who was not very good and also seems to have a small injury) with Goretzka, who will add some much needed physicality into the center of the pitch. Werner seems to be just a sub for Löw (and so far there is not much reason to prefer him, as the attacking power from the left wing comes mostly from Gosens, who does that quite well).

There is also a small chance that Goretzka and Kimmich could change their positions in that formation, but I don't think that's very likely

Werner starts instead of Gnabry, huge call from Low there.

Don't know why you are hating on the england line up. Germany can't break any massed, disciplined defense (unless they miraculously got that ability since the hungary game) and our defenders are slow and a bit shite in general. Looks like a decent way to set up against us.

disappointing negative line up..... would have played mount ahead of phillips at very least.

All that attacking talent & he’s predictably defensive.

Exactly my thoughts. Given the opponent and occasion, it's a good lineup

This lineup actually worries me quite a lot. I get the feeling that we'll rund our head against the defense for 25 minutes, then concede twice quickly before half from bang average counters that we can't deal with. A no holds barred offensive slug fest would have suited us so much better.

Kane has got to step up tonight, no two ways about it. His chances will be few and far between given that the lineup is so defensive, but we're talking about one of the most prolific strikers in world football. If he's on ir tonight, we'll pull it off.

Also, it's gonna be a horrible game of football for the neutrals. Steer clear unless you have a vested interest.

You know it's not a terrible team given how Germany line up, but only one of Trippier and Saka should be playing. Grealish has to be in the attack, it's like not playing De Bruyne. There's just very little creativity in attack now aside from Saka.

Also really one one of Phillips and Rice really need to be there. Henderson in there if fit would've been good.

I beg you Werner, please perform just once, just fecking once.

A back five and two defensive midfielders. In a strange way it's quite brave to be so defensive. He'll be slaughtered if it doesn't work out.

The English annoy so many people with their coming home stuff that I've started to greatly appreciate it.

Also doubt more than 10% of the people saying it actually mean or believe it.
It's no different from the French saying 'Allez les bleus' or the Italians saying 'Chi non salta' or the Icelanders doing their claps.

Or any club team singing 'Now you're gonna believe us, we're gonna win the league'.

It's exactly the thing everyone has been crying out for at football stadiums since March 2020. I think the difference is that English is better understood in foreign countries, so the words themselves seem to be taken more literally and seriously.

If the rumoured line up on Twitter is true, considering how poorly SOuthgate has used the bench so far, I will say it now.....he should be sacked after the game tonight (more than happy if got this totally wrong obviously, but I think just as much as he did so well in getting us to the semis withe the help of the draw at hte world cup with is man management.....his poor team management selection and tactically wise is one of the biggest reasons we have failed in our best chance for a veyr lon gtime of winning a major tournament, awful line up of pure negativity to try and stop the other side rather than beat them)

Confirmed now.

Best possible team for us I think.
Goretzkas work rate and interceptions will be important today. I also like Werner because Gnabry was quite bad until now.

I'm just wondering if Werner is the 9 or if Löw goes for Tuchels approach with Havertz as a false 9.

Englands line up is certainly... Well, interesting. While the formation is the same as ours I think our wingbacks and also our CMs are more attacking.
And we also don't have the options in attack you guys have.

Kane, Foden, Sancho, Mount could be one hell of an attack but 3/4 are on the bench, insane

Wow a back 5, 2 DM's and 1 attacker who's been know to play at FB

Ridiculous starting XI when you see the talent on the bench

The best of the lot, Grealish, not playing either.

This England team is mediocre individually. And as a team they haven’t impressed so far. Germany were terrific against Portugal but lackluster for a while. Rashford should start, and Greenwood should have been called up as a wild card. I see Germany winning this 3-1.

Thought England might beat Germany but looking at the teams I think it might be a draw, at least after 90.

It is not an entirely negative selection as long as Trippier and Shaw get forward and Saka and Sterling help push Gosens and Kimmich back. The lack of a playmaker could cost though. Looks like being a cagey game.

Quite glad Gnabry isn't starting.
