Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

So no creativity whatsoever in midfield or is he expecting Kane to do that job?
I think he wants Kane to replicate his pseudo playmaker role he does at Spurs, with Sterling playing the role of Son & Saka playing the role of Moura/Bale/Bergwijn. The biggest issue for me is Sterling & Saka are nowhere near as composed in front of goal as Son is.

Italy won't play this badly against a big team. Bigger teams won't sit back and defend this deep like Austria. This is similar to how Hungary played against Germany.. people underestimate how these smaller teams make up for their lack of quality with their high work rate.
Agreed. Just can't see how Germany break England down. Didn't score vs France and struggled to beat Hungary. Portugal game was an anomaly. They just aren't very good.
England - Scotland? If you cant score in that game...

I'm really not that nervous today, which is weird because I was bricking it before the Croatia game. We're going to have to beat Germany at tournament eventually. This is the best chance we've had in a long time.

Hummels is a problem. And it is not his lack of pace that make me afraid every time he steps for Germany on the field.
It is his lack of discipline as a central defender. He is too often hunting for glory tackles and winning balls, while leaving unannounced formation. He is the german version of brazilian Sideshow Bob.
And the other CBs than have to cover his gaps. And you can see it, that the others CBs rightfully don't trust him. Instead of playing in front of him (most central defender), they are in line with him or even a few steps behind him, to have a few steps to cover the open ground he leaves.
It is infuriating how he gets away with it time after time and undermines the essential trust and cohesion of our backline.

What you describe as glory hunting is actually called forward defending, which he does a lot and has always done a lot. It is part of his style. This style is not without risks as it does create the need to cover space behind him (and the reason why he should ideally always be partnered with fast defenders), but if used correctly it can have a ton of merit. Hummels has the necessary timing and anticipation to prevent a lot of attacking plays in its creation far away from the box and at the same time start transition plays for his team.

In short, it is the CBs version of a Sweeper Keeper, which is a risky play style as well but if it works out nearly all the time has a lot of advantages.

There is usually only place for one of this type of defender in a defensive system, though, and if you have two players going for the same style (as is the case with Germany as Rüdiger uses this a lot aswell just with a lesser success rate), you are left with a fragile defense, especially if the defensive midfield can not compensate for that.

The one thing you could find infuriating about Hummels are his occasional deep dribblings, which more often than not produce nothing of substance and just leave him massively out of position.

If you didn’t have Southgate picking the team yeah.

Holds the team back massively.

Also not nervous because I've already accepted the loss.

Anything above that is a bonus.

The teams we'll likely play after Germany aren't much if at all of a drop off in quality.

So nothing to get too excited about today. Even if we win. It's a 50 50 game. How we handle the pressure is as important as the quality of our players.

Also luck, crucially if a game goes to pens, need hope get lucky win the toss and make sure we go first!

Englands best chance for a in against Germany in quiet some time. They've been building a good youth team for years while Germany is a level behind.

On the other hand, Germany has this X-factor feeling to it. They are like the tumbling but steadfest giant that can destroy any team on a given day or go out in dread style. They are the bad playing team everyone fears :P

Not confident with that rumoured team

How we can leave Foden, Mount, Grealish, Sancho etc out of the 11 is still beyond me.

Faces huge questions if we go out tonight.

Southgate was always going to just match up the system and hope the fact we've got better front players and bench take over later in the game.

Think he's mental not to start Sancho and Bellingham though when they will have played against the majority of this side and shone.

On the bench we will have Grealish, Mount, Foden, Rashford, Sancho and Bellingham. That's a hell of a bench.

Denmark, and they aren't even top-seeded. An easy group where they finished second on three (!) points, still managed to get a last 16 against the worst team, Wales, and will now face the Cech Republic in the quarter-final. Incredibly. England won their relative tough group and then meet Germany in the last 16, and even if they are lucky in an eventual quarter-final, it's not that easy so far.
Their talisman nearly died. They STILL had to finish the game against Finland (a game they were dominating until the big incident).

Based on their level as a group of players minus their best player, a game against Czech and one of Eng/Ger/Ukr/Swe in the next round isn't easy on my opinion.

The concern I have is England will go out on a whimper. If they play like they have so far this tournament, I can't see us really creating anything.

For me, going out isn't the problem, it is the manner of going out. I hope I am proven wrong and we don't sit too deep.

I think Croatia v Spain actually shows what happens when you sit too deep. Spain were looking imperious, but as soon as Croatia started actually getting up the pitch, Spain looked nowhere near as comfortable. For me, Croatia's initial phase of sitting back cost them. I think they could have possibly beaten Spain in 90 minutes if they started the game as positive as they ended the 90, but they made it far more difficult for themselves.

Haven't looked in the thread but what's the predicted german 11 out of interest?

Feels like a front 3 of Werner, Muller and Gnabry would cause all sort of issues for England with their movement if not always the finishing then have Havertz as number 10 and then Goretzka in midfield to give some mobility. Kimmich could be in there aswell but probably need out wide to try to nulify Saka.

I hope if england have to chase bring all the attackers and Bellingham in one go. Who ever on the pitch played not well should be hooked.Go for win at all cost before penalties.

I can honestly say now that it’s so close I’ve got no confidence in us getting it done  It’ll be fun though, these tragic England nights are just a part of life aren’t they, something special about them.

English people and their weird obsession with Germans part 2000

Wow I never realized the record was this bad. They've only one a knockout game one time and it was on penalties.

Interesting also that the English just say "Football is coming home" when the Germans come over. We are coming home, so what?

We say footballs coming home 365 days a year, kids in school say it every morning in front of a picture of Gazza like American kids say the pledge of allegiance

Most likely Germany will keep their 3-4-2-1 formation, that is expected to look like:
----------------------- Gnabry ------------------------------
----------- Havertz ----------- Müller-------------------
Gosens -- Kroos ----- Goretzka ---- Kimmich
----- Rüdiger --- Hummels ----------- Ginter -----
------------------------ Neuer --------------------------------

So more or less back to the formation of the first two group games, just replacing Gündogan (who was not very good and also seems to have a small injury) with Goretzka, who will add some much needed physicality into the center of the pitch. Werner seems to be just a sub for Löw (and so far there is not much reason to prefer him, as the attacking power from the left wing comes mostly from Gosens, who does that quite well).

There is also a small chance that Goretzka and Kimmich could change their positions in that formation, but I don't think that's very likely

I watch english sports channels quite a lot and what you're saying is so far of the truth that not even the opposite is correct.

The English annoy so many people with their coming home stuff that I've started to greatly appreciate it.

Also doubt more than 10% of the people saying it actually mean or believe it.

If we going to be playing 343 to match Germany then under normal circumstances he really should be playing the 3 Chelsea lads who know the formation inside out. If only some bonkers tick box bureaucrat didn't insist that Mount and Chillwell have to isolate for 10 days. I would still play them both, but I doubt Gareth will risk it with them being out of training for so long.
