Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

The Dutch? That's over, we are not in the seventies any more, there just were no important matches for decades now between Germany and the Netherlands.

Do we obsess about England? Nope, not at all. There is the ritual to mention the legendary "Wembley Goal" 1966 where it just is common German belief that it wasn't a goal and that Germany should have won the world cup, but apart from that there is just a vague feeling "yeah there is a lot of history" in regard to England, but frankly it's not like that was crucial history for Germany, England appears usually as a "also were beaten during the run to the final" in German football history, so there are just very few important moments for us.

We do care and sometimes obsess about Brazil and Italy I would say. Italy more as someone we fear, Brazil more as someone we admire for their beautiful game. But admittedly also that is not really true any longer... I don't remember my peers celebrating a semi final win as little as that tragic 7-1 in 2014, just should not have happened that way.
I thought this too but Klinsman said Netherlands when asked who are Germany's biggest rivals in the tournament... So I assumed something is still there for these two.

Maybe so! Its coming home, its your year!
I've never said it's our year or it's coming home. You can mock all you like, it's what I expect from a German with a superiority complex. Hope for your sake your confidence is well placed and your German warriors can beat the pathetic feeble English.

Question: do Germany and Argentina obsess over their rivalries with England as much as England do about these two teams?

I know Germany and Dutch have a big rivalry as do Argentina and Brazil.

No, it's seen as a classic here, but not a rivalry. The only true rivalry we have is the one with the Netherlands. It's only nation we like to sing about. "Ohne Holland fahrn wir zur WM" or "Orange trägt nur die Müllabfuhr" are true evergreens. Italy gets mentioned here by a few, but they are to us what we are to you, the nemesis.

You're not making any sense.
It actually does. Would have to do sth. with inferiority and would require a little bit of thinking.
Well, I admit my trolling attempt was to ambitious though ;)

So England are going with a back 7 ?

Pretty adventurous for Southgate ...

Your going to get humped badly due to having a gutless manager.

Also not nervous because I've already accepted the loss.

Anything above that is a bonus.

I've not reached that level of pessimism just yet

I know what you mean though. There is a limit to how confident one can be with Southgate in charge. I'm nowhere near confident today, but Germany do not exactly put the fear of god in me either.

Considering how much Germany struggled against a parked bus and is hilariously open on the counter, I actually think this lineup gives England a good chance. It's reactive, yeah, but so what?

we will be praising the tactical masterclass of Southgate in short time.

The English annoy so many people with their coming home stuff that I've started to greatly appreciate it.

Also doubt more than 10% of the people saying it actually mean or believe it.

If you came to England and stopped 100 people in the streets and asked them if they were serious about it's coming home, I can almost guarantee you that close to 100% of them would tell you it's just a bit of a laugh and it's not meant to be taken seriously. It's taken on a life of it's own though and the fact that it boils the piss of so many outside of England is enough of a reason to shout it from the rooftops everywhere.

I think many fans say it ironically but with a hint of hope. Well, that's how my England supporting friends put it.

That'll be the big talking point. If it works, amazing. If not it'll be 'we should've gone attacking'. The only thing that matters is the result. If England get through, then it's the correct team.

I assume that Klinsmann is older than most german posters on here. In his generation, the iconic matches of 1974, 1988 and 1990 are still preserved in memory. I honestly can't recall any great match against the netherlands that I watched live, so for me, jabs against the dutch are pretty much a part of history and tradition, but it's not a proper rivalry. Italy is where it's at for me.

Fergie did the same to Barcelona in 08 even though United was the best team in Europe that year. Like you said, if it works, it works. No extra points for beautiful football.

Of course, we do actually have a pretty decent team so it's not completely unthinkable that football could truly come home

Sexy football generally doesn't win international tournaments, not recently anyway. That said, I really don't like the forward line I've seen floating about.

I still remember musical highlights, such as "only the bin men wear orange" and "were going to the WC [or what it an EC?] without Holland" but that was about 10 years ago and seems to have spelled the end of it.

How have we managed to field a team that shit from a squad that was pretty good?

"Ohne Holland fahr'n wir zur WM" was a thing in 2002. Time flies, eh?
