Paying this type of money for a player from the Dutch League seems quite risky right now. Very few in recent years have been able to cope with the step up, especially when done in the middle of their development.

Spurs finally loosen the purse strings! In this market 40 mill is almost the going rate for a young player with high potential.

Yeah it's great to see and gives me hope that we can make that next step.

This is definitely the step I think you needed to take, that I think I've mentioned to you a few time - although I would have thought it would be an attacker! Be very interested to see if that's the only one though.

I confused his age with De Ligt then I think. Still that's very young for a defender, he has 7-8 years go before his peak and plenty of time to win a place in first team. Being rotated with Alderweireld and Verthonghen is not the end of the world either.

Spurs have been playing various forms 3 at the back off and on for Poch's entire tenure (yes, BEFORE Conte re-invented the formation in England) and he clearly wasn't happy with the CB depth. Sanchez will cover for Alderweireld, play on as RCB when Spurs go 3 at the back and get plenty of matches. He's also cover against Alderweireld leaving in a year, which Spurs absolutely had to have. Cameron Carter-Vickers hasn't progressed as hoped to this point, and Wimmer is a good player but not on the level of Alderweireld/Vertonghen. Dier also struggled a bit playing as RCB and prefers to be in the midfield. That means Spurs had a big hole to fill, and seems we were willing to throw a good chunk of money at it to fill it.

Also, he's a right fecking bastard - physical and dominant in the air and cocky. Pochettino seems to love that type of player, he's built a team full of hard bastards and seems intent on adding to that mentality. Spurs are one of the most physical and aggressive teams in Europe, and Sanchez is going to add to that.

He looks light years ahead of Lindelof (albeit early days), Smalling and blind. I don't often think wow, 'he looks some player' but I did with him and at such a young age.

You're basing that on Sanchez in the EL final and Lindelof in pre-season. None of us really have any idea how Lindelof will turn out. Give him a chance.

Sanchez has all the physical attributes and he does look monstrous, but if we bought him, he would be the poorest of all out centre backs with the ball at his feet, Smalling included. At Ajax, De Ligt was the far more accomplished centre back, whilst being 4 years younger. If there's anyone we should go for, it is him. What Sanchez brings, I think we already have covered with Bailly, Smalling and arguably Jones as well. I personally see Bailly as the better prospect.

Sanchez was Ajax player of the season and Ruud Gullit called him the best Ajax defender since Jaap Stam (i.e - better than Vertonghen or Alderweireld). There's no situation where De Ligt was the more accomplished player of the two. Not to say De Ligt isn't a monster prospect (he is), but Sanchez was the rock that team was built on last year.

I'm happy with Lindelof, he hasn't adjusted as fast as some of you may like, but he's obviously a very talented CB as can be seen by his exploits in a much better league. They're also of a similar age and Lindelof was cheaper. Don't see what the fuss is about, if he's a great buy for Spurs then so be it.

Think this will prove to be a bargain purchase in a few years. Rarely seen a CB impress me so much in just a few games.

I only saw Ajax in the knockout stages, and a handful of league games last season. De Ligt looked better to me in that small sample, especially so in the Europa League where they faced tougher opposition. Sanchez was poor in the two legs against Lyon, especially in the 2nd leg when Lyon mounted a comeback, and De Ligt was significantly better in the EL final. Sanchez made some impressive looking recoveries in the final, but in general he was all over the place. With the ball, he looked very uncomfortable and Mourinho sounded him out as not being a threat with it, and he was right. Even when Sanchez marauded in to our half with the ball as he was allowed to do, his attempts to play the ball were often wayward. I've said it before, I think he's a very good pure defender, with the potential to be monstrous if he can sort out his positioning, but unless he makes an enormous transformation, he is incredibly raw as a footballer.

I've not heard the Gullit quote. Stam was 36 when he played for Ajax and retired at the end of one season, so it's a bit of a weird quote. I'd hope that most defenders are better than a 36 year old on the brink of retirement.

If Daniel Levy wasn't a tosser - yet again going out of his way to strengthen Spurs when the season has
already started - this lad could have signed weeks ago. Instead, he's coming in for a vastly inflated fee, having had no time to bed in during pre season. Typically horrendous squad management from Spurs for what must be the umpteenth summer in a row. I await their annual deadline day duffer...

Can't say I've seen enough of him to have an educated opinion of how good he is compared to the money spent, but from what I've seen I think he definitely can be a very good signing for us.

And for those saying we're paying a club record for a squad player, with the market being what it is it's hard not to so I wouldn't worry too much about that. The goalposts have been moved.

First one down and if Poch is to be believed, 2 more to go.

Looked a beast against us in the EL final although very raw. Like Smalling and Jones rolled into one.

Spurs need to start off his signing video with Danny Rose googling him.

Is this a thing that all clubs do now? Signing videos? Its very strange imo.

I'll wait for the official site confirmation before I believe this!

Sanchez is 18. He has plenty of time to break through and will have plenty of games to feature in considering Spurs are likely to play more than 50 this season.
Doesn't answer the question really. If they are playing 2 at the back he still needs to play better than both Verthongen and Alderweireld which is doubtful.

Why does he have to play better than both? If he is second best center half at the club (so better than just one of them), he will start on a regular basis. If he is third best defender there, he still gets to play a lot.

He's a decent play. I don't expect to see much of him too soon, but in a couple of years time he could be a top player for Spurs.

He doesn't get to play a lot as a third defender. He'll hardly start any league or CL games with 2 at the back.

We will play 3 at the back.
Makes sense considering the transfers but why change a formula that works?

We played 3 at the back a lot last season, it's the way we will play from now on and has been our preferred tactic for some time.

Do Spurs really need more potential though?

Surely an investment or two in serious quality is what elevates them a level.

Perhaps but this is a great start to the window for us and Poch said today he wants 4 players in so hopefully more to come.

The thing i remember most is how Pogba just pushed him off a ball without even trying. It was like a man against a boy.

Looks like it was a fairly close battle if you watch this - in fact Sanchez overpowered Pogba on occasion (check out from about 40 seconds in).

You played it a lot less than 4-2-3-1 is what I'm saying. What does some time mean? Pre-season?

Dier played quite a lot in a back 3 for us last season and we only moved to a 4-2-3-1 when Toby and/or Wanyama/Dembele were injured. 3-4-3 is our preferred tactic when we have the players.

OK, if he is better than one but worse than the other, who plays?

Besides, Verthonghen and Alderweireld won't start 50 odd games.
