Please anyone defend this, as the tweet says what are we actually supposed to do, anytime the ball goes back to him it's virtually guaranteed opposite team posession, you could argue the first goal was a freak goal but the second one bounces twice and rolls in and he still can't save it ffs

Not arguing against most of your point, but I think, the players that passed to him shouldn't be absolved from criticism. I mean a) they know his kicking is a known weakness and b) they were just as uncomfortable on the ball in 9 out of 10 situations. Goalkeeper is an issue for us for sure. Using this game against him, making him the scapegoat feels a bit shortsighted to me.

Kicking was poor but thought people were being overly harsh criticising him for the second goal given how unsighted he was. If there wasn't the pre-existing narrative around De Gea it would have passed with far less comment.

But in big picture terms that pre-existing narrative is there and for good reason.
Yeah my thoughts completely. There is just one or two levels between City and us. They are so comfortable on the ball, we mostly aren't even attempting playing the game. Thats not completely on the keeper even though he certainly is a "we have to do something"-level of issue.

Very very surprised. Adjusted for possession it still only probably comes out even.

My actual point still stands. We go back to him so needlessly when we know we'll lose it it anyway. We massively massively need to improve in midfield regardless if we have ederson or ddg in there.

Well, you're right in that. Eriksen was our worst player today alongside De Gea, we do need an upgrade on both.

Not even sure hes at fault for either but if we can get anyone to replace him we just need to at this stage.

First one I don't see how you can blame him. Second one he could probably do better for but if people weren't inclined to criticise him they'd be more generous given he was clearly unsighted.

That said, we know he's very weak in other regards, today most notably in terms of his kicking which was really poor. And if you're that dependent on shot-stopping to justify your place in the team, "could have done better" on the winning goal in a cup final probably isn't good enough.

It’s not binary, but this is De Gea in a nutshell at this point. His shot stopping is below PSxG over the last five seasons. He’s not a good shot stopper any longer, and he’s diabolical at everything else.
His kicking was worse than diabolical today.

What grinds me even further is we don't pack the midfield to win the 2nd ball then from his longer kicks either. What is the plan when we pass back to him? Clueless all over.

I’m out of this thread. It’s not even worth debating anymore, if you can’t see how much this fraud costs us, then go watch tennis or F1 because football isn’t your sport.
Ah yes, the old, checkmate argument: 'if you can't see X then football isn't for you.' How original.

Please please let us buy a new keeper this summer. You've been a reasonable servant Dave but the time has come a long time ago

Yeah, feck it. GK is more important than striker, we just cant play when we have a keeper that gives the ball away every time.

Horrific with his kicking again, but did nothing wrong with the goals, saved a 1v1 with De Bruyne as well.

Fact of the matter is Gundogan should never have been allowed to shoot uncontested from those positions, the CMs went to sleep on those.
It's a volley from outside the box. Shots from there will happen. The 2nd goal bounced fecking twice before it went in. That's 100% on de Gea just being slow as feck to react. 1st is a screamer fair, but a top goalkeeper who is sharp and on it does have a chance of saving it. De Gea hasn't been a top goalkeeper for 5 years.

But the point is the players should feel confident enough to be able to pass back to him when they have no other choice, I don't think they're passing to him on purpose knowing that it will help us lose the ball. They should be able to pass it back when they want safe in the knowledge our keeper isn't going to pass it to the other team nine times out of ten, what else can they do with a keeper like that behind them? I agree maybe they don't always have to pass it back but at times there really is no other option and then that's that, we can't play with a keeper of this level of distribution against a team like Manchester City, we just can't.

Good thing ETH has much more football knowledge than Davehate Cafe and will extend his contract. I guess he should also go manage Tennis? Haters are out in full force!
Haters

ETH isn't God. Not everything he does is right. De Gea has been shit since 2018. This club will not improve with him in goal.

My point in a nutshell. Our outfielders are uncomfortable with the ball and would rather go back to him and see him lump it forward.

For the second goal his positioning is awful. Too far to the left which reduced his chances of saving it.

If he was in the centre as he should have been, it's an easy save.

He should've saved the second goal. I can understand those who say he saw it late but he got a hand to it and should've kept it out. If he can't pull off those game deciding saves, he should not be our keeper. Because his distribution was poor again, even City's second choice keeper can pass better than him. In a game that has shifted towards pressing and playing around the press, having him is a liability. It's a shame we have so many holes in the team already that we can't replace him with our limited budget.

Time to move him on

At this level you can’t continuously hoof the ball upfield like that and give away cheap possession. Clubs spend hundreds of millions on players just to help them keep the ball better and we have this clown smashing long balls to Sancho and Bruno

Feck right off

Needs to go, and don't give me who else can play. I would rather Henderson or even Kovar than this guy.

Yes, haters. There are tons of posts in here saying they hate and despise him, calling him a clown etc. It is embarrassing.

And you don't have to be a god to do the obvious thing and extend his contract.

Agree. I vote automatic demotion to the newbies for any posters who trots out the "good shotstopper" line.

He is an abomination of a goalkeeper and I genuinely believe he costs us 20+ goals a season with his pitifully passive style and his constant mistakes
Good thing your hypothetical vote has no bearing.

Can only think those that still somehow rate him are more concerned with their favourites playing rather than what's best for the club moving forward

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why xG shouldn't be quoted out of context by people that don't understand it.
City played better than us. But not significantly. The first goal I have no qualms about- it happens. The second is a terrible mistake. Let's ignore both of them - every time we got the ball back and needed to play out from the back he lost us the ball. City's 2nd choice goalkeeper was far superior to ours today. Is that acceptable?

Do you have faith in DDG to be a starter or extend to be a back up?

It helps when you get a penalty from nothing. I’m still struggling to work out how we got over 1 without the pen.

There is no chance that ETH is happy with this, if fans can pick this shit up, then so can the manager.

Wonder why the new contract has not been signed if ETH is happy with this keeper.

No doubt his new contract will still be the best paid keeper in the league too.

I cant believe people still think this guy is an elite shot stopper. Every season he concedes the softest goals that I could have saved. We were so in the game at that point, Fred giving the free kick away in the first place was beyond stupid, and then our keeper watches the ball trickle into his net.

1st was a top bin volley at the goal corner when Lindelof was kind enough to head the ball perfectly to Gundogan.

2nd went through the legs of AWB and Varane got out of the way when both of them blocked his view, that’s why he dove late.

Midfielders will have a pop from those positions yes, but they should be contested to close down the angles or stop the shooter from generating power on the ball, look at how many times City cleared the same ball when we tried to have the same pot shots, that’s what being alert and actually doing your job defensively looks like.

I’m not even defending him, his kicking was horrific again and felt like anytime he went long we lost the ball, but it’s churlish to blame the GK for 2 fortuitous/wonder goals and the loss when our only shot on target was the pen and he saved a 1v1.

His shot stopping has gone downhill. He is a completely average goalkeeper now; time to move him on and bring in another.

He should have saved the second.
