Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

I can't believe we were this daft to sell them a striker on the brink of becoming top class. We are going to regret this big time.

Our spending power means we wont really ever regret this but this situation will hurt in a couple of years when we need to.buy strikers again and he's genuinely top drawer at Arsenal. Genuinely gutted to lose him, i'v always been sure he'd be a top player and his development under LVG was one of the things i was looking forward to the most.

It has been coming for a while though, been saying it for a couple of years, a player like him needs to play games and it was never going to happen here. Totally understandable but I wish it was out of the country, seeing him at Arsenal will suck.

Dont think we had a choice. This situation has been coming for a while now. He was never going to.be happy continuing in his present role, far too much of a talent for that.

Jeeesus, some of you really are cringeworthy. No player is bigger than the club, be thankful for the overhaul we've had, nobody expected anything like it. I bet Welbeck will be all forgotten as soon as the results go our way.

How can I be thankful when I don't like it at all? I can take that bet because that will not happen for me.

For me this sale is less about Welbeck specifically and more about United selling its soul/identity. Since Busby the club has been founded upon youth development and bringing youth through and for us to sell one of our young players, to allow room for an established older player, seems the opposite of I know and perceive the club to be.

Granted, in the past perhaps Fergie went too far in the other direction. However I now think the balance has shifted in that respect and it is far more negative than having misguided faith in youth.

Good lord. You honestly can't think of when we've done this before? If we hadn't bought Tevez we could've given Rossi a chance. He's one of many young players that have been forced to move on because of big money signings.

I still don't get selling him. Loaning him to someone like Spurs/Everton would have made so much more sense. They play excellent football and are vying for European places. He could have got regular games there and we would have seen how he does as the centre man over the course of the season. Was he in the last year of his contract?

Hope he does shit there.

It's very big of people to wish him well but he's gone to a direct rival so feck him and feck Arsenal.

Unfortunate decision. I suppose it's probably how Arsenal fans felt when the club sold RvP to United. It will be interesting to check out what Pete has said about Welbeck in the past on this forum.

This one upset me. Local lad, been with United since he was 8, had the club in his veins.

What if Falcao doesn't work out? Wish it had been a loan - I read that he rejected that idea.

Guess he has to do what's best for himself if he'd been told he wouldn't feature much.

Don't even want to think about this transfer anymore. Time to put it behind.

Oh they never rated him much. things will change from their point of view.

I honestly don't harbor ill feelings towards him, but as I mentioned earlier, I cannot be that magnanimous so as to hope he does well for them. Do Arsenal fans hope Fabregas does well for Chelsea?

Must have been really hard for him to leave the club, but he made the right decision. I hate that he went to Arsenal, but it's a really good opportunity for him and let's be honest, with our striking options he wasn't gonna play much here.

I wish him all the best and I'm sure he will do great for Arsenal.

What about all this LvG giving youth a chance too? He obviously didn't want to give Danny much of one :(

Disappointed to see him go he's a young talented player that came through the ranks would have liked to see him given more of a chance under LVG. His pace and work rate will be missed would have preffered it to be a loan deal. Whilst the signings we have made are incredibly exciting sad to see local talent leave the club.

Really sinking in now. Still remember how he scored that screamer on his debut. He was still an 18 year old kid then. :(

I know people hate this. But SAF would never have sold him to Arsenal. He would have kicked Gills arse if he even entertained anything like this. Would have made Welbeck see out the contract he signed. SAF wouldn't sell Heinze who was past it to Liverpool.

Giroud out injured and he's better than Sanago. He'll be first choice for a while if he's fit, can't say the same thing if he stayed with us.

No cause he wasn't good enough full stop. Whether he started or came of the bench. Nice player and won't look out of place in a Arsenal shirt but never score enough goals. LVG I trust implicitly, and we've replaced Danny with a truly world class footballer. IMO in Wilson if he continues to develop, he have a future star in the making that does score goals.

I think there's an element of sentimentality getting involved in people's reactions here, and also the fear of change.

The thing is, we need change.

As I said earlier in a genuine question - how would you feel if we kept Welbeck and Arsenal signed Falcao? How would fancy our chances of finishing above them? How would you feel about their chances of winning the league if they signed Falcao?

I'm also sad to see Danny go, but I'm glad that we're giving him a decent move, same with Hernandez - it will factor well for us when enticing other young prospects. It shows that we're not bitter and we won't prevent our players from moving on when they're surplus to requirements.

This also sends an important message to our youngsters - take your chances and fight to get into the team or your off.

Whilst I agree, and am in favour of moving Welbeck out, in fact I think Manchester United Football Club should have tried more actively to move another of our strikers out.

He really should have gone out on loan and come back next season. I guess he felt disrespected that he was expected to go out on loan at the age of 24. Everyone would have realised RvP is past it, Rooney is a year older, and I can't see us paying for Falcao permanently.
We'll have to go out and buy a striker and watch Welbeck play for Arsenal every week.

Would rather sell Rooney or RvP back to Arsenal, if we get Falcao.

Feck it, he'll be a star at Arsenal as their style really suit him to boot. I'm unreasonably upset about this sale, as I was expecting big thing from him at United.

Van Persie was Arsenal's best player and captain. Welbeck has been a squad player for us and a surplus to requirements, if Arsenal hadn't come in for him he'd have gone to Spurs/Hull/Sunderland/any other mid-table club, van Persie would have probably moved to Juventus or Real Madrid if United hadn't picked him up.

Gutting.

There's a part of me that wants him to do very well there.

Gutted. All the best to him and I mean that. I like being proven correct and I genuinely hope he can turn into the striker I thought he could here given the game time and trust in his real position. He's got a cracking head on his shoulders and I respect him for rejecting the usual rotation bollocks that players from the academy tend to gleefully accept. It's a brave move, this, and I hope it works out for him, the national side and also my ego. Good luck, Danny.

How do you know the team still isn't focused on youth development?
One transfer window in which we have sold a player who a large section of the United fan base consider not good enough and virtually every other fan of every other club thinks isn't good enough is sold and all of a sudden the club has lost its identity and soul?

The only bad thing to come out of this window :( bye bye Wellbz and good luck.
Ah feck Cleverley has fecked us over, two bad things then.

It's ironic that given Wengers history of playing players out of position (especially forwards) that people think there isn't a chance that he is going to end up dumped out wide.

You like being correct so much you want the new striker Arsenal just signed to be a big success? Bloody hell. Priorities.

I honestly don't think he'll reach the height some of you are describing. Think he'll do well there, but I really don't see him suddenly becoming prolific.

Ridiculous decision to sell him. We will regret it.

If we don't finish top four it won't be because of Danny Welbeck, I'm sure of that. We can still win titles while Welbeck goes on to have a successful career.

It's funny, because Walcott, who is a natural striker, has played there about twice ever for Arsenal.

Out of interest, do Arsenal fans and Wenger not consider him a striker anymore?
