Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

Great signing by Arsenal. Awful decision by United to let him go at all, downright negligent to sell him to a rival for the top four. If he went on loan we had the small mercy of him not playing against us. Now watch him score for Arsenal at Old Trafford ffs.

This will bite us on the arse. Mark my words. Big fan of his as a United player but hope this move doesn't work out, for obvious reason. Football, bloody hell :(

I'm sad to see him go. He'd been with us for so long, I expected him to stay forever.. or at least till he was in his 30s.

But then I was sad to see O'shea and Brown in the Sunderland shirt just after they had left. Phil and Butt made sense at that time.

Not sure we'll miss the 'striker' Welbeck.. Not even the 'footballer'.. Just sad to see him go. If he was at some other club, I'd want him to succeed too.. Not now that he is at Arsenal.. Do poorly, get a move to a mid table side, and kick on.

Tough one to take. Think the people at the top are betraying the traditions of the club by selling him, and to see him go to Arsenal... Convinced he'll to well for them and that we'll regret this in two years when RvP has retired and Rooney's decline has seen us bench him. Awful, awful decision. Disgusted.

Same but never thought any of them had as much potential, plus we'd already seen the best of them.

This is more like losing Rossi, Pique or Pogba. If they'd moved to bloody Arsenal, that is. Unbelievable.

What bothers me the most, is that we left Welbeck go, and we still have the likes of Valencia, Young, Fletcher, Anderson and Cleverley in our squad.

Danny frustrated us all at times, and you might even argue he was one of the players who should have been sold. Sure, i am happy with the apparent squad overhaul, but i feel like we started in the wrong end. Welbeck might not have been our best players, but he sure as h*ll wasn't deadwood either.

Also, the price we got leaves a bitter taste. It was deadline day, and Arsenal was desperate for a striker. All in all, it was a lousy deal for us.

This is not something we will regret doing.

Losing any of those 3 to Arsenal would have been far worse than losing Welbeck to them if we take away the local boy aspect.

I like Welbeck but my god, this place treats him like their first born son.

He hasn't done it for us consistently but may be able to for another top team, this, along with the fact he wanted to leave is why he's been sold.

How so they betraying traditions? They didn't want to sell him. Welbeck was the one who has been pushing for the move for a while now. This is even before for Falcao. And seems he was pushing for a permanent deal to Arsenal rather than loan to Spurs.

I feel Welbeck has been wrongly guided by his agent.

And the reason he wanted to leave is that LVG presumably told him he didn't really see him as a big part of his plans.

We've no idea how this started. There's every chance the club told him they didn't need him and started touting him to mid-table clubs, then him and his agent dug their heels in over a move to a bigger club and it escalated from there. Once he knew he wasn't wanted, stands to reason he'd push for the best possible move for his career. He got it too.

Most likely told him he's not a guaranteed first team starter. Maybe he didn't impress LVG at training?

Well it started last season there were reports leaked from his side that he wanted to leave, when Moyes was in charge.

Good luck to him. He's clearly wanted to leave for quite some time and it's probably because he wants to become a better player. He will have a lot more oppurtunities at Arsenal and I can only see him improving. It's a terrible deal for us as a club though.

Imagine the scenes here if he helps Arsenal keep United out of the top four.

It's the only reason I'm not happy about it. Let's face it, he was never going to start regularly and he has wanted that for a while now. Good for him and the club that he moves on, shame it had to be to striker-less Arsenal, much rather he had gone to Spurs, but can't have your cake and eat it I guess.

Rossi and Pogba never got a chance. Selling/Losing young players from the reserves to rivals would've been awful.
Pique was a different case. He did well in La Liga on loan the season before he was sold and Barca wanted him back.

Welbeck is nothing like those 3. He got plenty of game time and a lot of time in the first team squad.

I've seen him since he was playing for the U18s and it'd suck to not have him around, especially when he is good enough to be in the squad.. He wanted more than being a backup though..
He wasn't getting games as a striker with the options we had... and now that we have started splashing the cash we have, there are plenty of better options in the market. He was unlikely to be first choice striker at United anytime soon.

He wanted the move, too good for mid table. Not a lot of options.
He isn't at that "world class" level for me to be upset about the transfer for footballing reasons..

Wonder how those potential academy recruits will think about us.Sold our only striker came through the rank in the last 20 years, sold a 20-year-old Wales international who had a great season on loan and leave our most promising talent from the academy stagnant on the bench. To think the likes of Valencia,Anderson,Young,... still here playing (and starting match) make me just want to scratch my head.We wanted to rebuild but the deadwoods still there and instead we sold those who are good enough to have a future with us (and were with us since 7-8 years old).

For me this sale is less about Welbeck specifically and more about United selling its soul/identity. Since Busby the club has been founded upon youth development and bringing youth through and for us to sell one of our young players, to allow room for an established older player, seems the opposite of I know and perceive the club to be.

Granted, in the past perhaps Fergie went too far in the other direction. However I now think the balance has shifted in that respect and it is far more negative than having misguided faith in youth.

For the Arsenal fans in this thread.. Remember "zup zup say nada"
You'll get to use it quite a bit

Welbeck will prob do well at Arsenal and will start well for them with odd goal and work rate but in time they too will see the inconsistency, fading out of games and no end product-that we have seen for years. Wilson is now our fourth striker too which is good news.

Maybe. Rooney and RvP must be dominating though because they continually get picked despite under performing.

Valencia must be the best though. He's managed to fool three managers.

Good move for him. He was a regular two seasons ago. Since then, he's seen Van Persie, Mata, Di Maria and Falcao arrive to play in the positions he's been playing. Now he's at a club in a better position, playing for just the right manager for this type of player in a team that suits him better, slotting into a squad with a huge Welbeck sized hole in it. Ideal move for him really.

Hope he does just well enough to finish above you. Don't see him doing a Sturridge. They are not the same type. But maybe with a few years of moulding, he'll grow into an Henry-lite type goalscorer. Also a good chance he'll frustrate them as much as he should have frustrated your lot with his lack of composure in the box.

Did he? Pretty sure he was saying if he's not playing centre then he could leave.

It will be interesting though what happens when Giroud is back.

That interview was pre-Van Gaal and included this quote:

His issue is particularly when United operate with a 4-4-2 system. “It depends what formation we are playing. On the left of a four-man midfield there are a lot more defensive duties so you can’t find the time to keep attacking. But if you’re on the left of a 4-3-3, I find that position really good. I can play in any formation but, if I play on the left, I’d rather play there if there are three in midfield.”

He was probably as excited as the rest of us when Van Gaal took over.

To me it's all about expectations. Would Welbeck be an asset for a team fighting for fourth? Absolutely. Just like Hernandez and Cleverley would be. However it seems Van Gaal doesn't want to build a team to fight for fourth, he wants a title winning team and apart from warming the bench Welbeck will never be key to that. Kagawa likewise.

I expect Young, Valencia, Cleverley, Fellaini and Fletcher to follow in the next 12 months.

This is fecking disgusting decision, I still can't get over it and never will. This was the first thing I checked in the morning at it ruined my day. I don't have any sympathy for van Gaal and Ed after this, terrible terrible decision. :(

A Longsight Red in an Arsenal shirt. I understand why it's happened but it fills me with sadness. My favourite player :(

Imagine if he's the reason you don't make Champions League. Just imagine.

Imagine he is the one who slips in front of an open goal and you miss out on CL. Just imagine! There are more chances of this happening than him keeping us out of CL.

Jeeesus, some of you really are cringeworthy. No player is bigger than the club, be thankful for the overhaul we've had, nobody expected anything like it. I bet Welbeck will be all forgotten as soon as the results go our way.
