Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

That Van Persie/Welbeck maths equation is one the most retarded logical non sequiturs I've ever seen in this place. Which is fighting off stiff competition.
It's not a 'non sequitur' at all, it's more 'fututa sum hic' ... I got forked ere

Arsenal did get well and truly f**ked between the two deals.

We took your captain and best player, and 2 seasons on you got Welbeck - and you're 8m better off for it.

I don't care how much sentimental, reactionary nonsense is in the air right now - Arsenal haven't come out of that trade off well, and I firmly believe time will prove me right.

You need to wonder why Real (who've just taken Hernandez off us) and Chelsea (who desperately needed a striker not so long ago) weren't in for him - he isn't good enough to cut it as an elite striker. Wenger knows this and is getting his excuses in early so no-one will be whinging when he puts Giroud back in as CF as soon as he recovers.

Welbeck, in my opinion, won't be Arsenal's first choice CF in the long run. Giroud and Walcott are both superior to him as strikers.

Neither were in for Falcao either... thus, he must not be good enough either...

Chelsea couldn't take Falcao due to FFP. Real were clearly in for Falcao and the deal fell through, wages, injury concerns I dunno, but they were in for him.

Forget the long term _ for 4 months we don't have anyone to play cf apart from Yaya who's a year or two off a start - I would have kept Welbeck just to fluck us over (I thought you'd pull the plug at midnight - waste our time, make sure we don't get anyone else).

Maybe we wanted to make sure you didn't get anyone else except for Welbeck...

They took Diego Costa without too much fuss... if they wanted Falcao they would have made it work... and were Real really in for him? Because again, if they were they probably would have got him.

Falcao's wages would've hit Chelsea's FFP status hard.

Like I said, who knows why the Real deal didn't come off, but they were clearly in for Falcao.

You keep saying this... but based on what exactly?!

Also, again, if Chelsea wanted Falcao - they could certainly afford him around FFP, considering their outgoings this summer and whatnot. Also, it's not like Deigo Costa will be on nothing...

you miss the point, the fact that they took him. Its not out of the equation that they looked at Welbeck, especially considering how he played against them
there were rumors about Madrid wanting him to replace morata. dont know if there is any truth to them.

As far as Wenger, you lot are taking his comments out of context. he said he didn't hesitate in signing welbeck but he was most likely lookin for a loan deal. Since Welbeck was signed permanently, it means he wouldn't have signed him as he wanted him on loan with an option to buy.

Welbeck v Giroud

I personally think that Welbeck will hold onto his spot when Giroud returns

I don't. I think Welbeck will be a useful player for them, a 'utility' attacker if you will, but he won't keep Giroud out of the team when he comes back.

Giroud is under-rated on here and Welbeck is wildly over-rated (since his sale at least).

Maybe, but I think Giroud is underrated by most fans, including some Arsenal fans I know. He's not top class, but he's still a very good striker imo. I think Danny can but Giroud is decent competition.

Exactly, its unfortunate he doesnt score lots but I really like his play. But Welbz is a legend, he turned twice as good when he left us.

Was reading an interview with Nicky Butt there.

To sum up, he said:

"Always sad to let a local lad go"
"He wanted to go to keep his England place"
"Have to respect his decision"
"Wasn't going to get many games here"
"Youth is still important"
"Giggs and I were at an under 10's match the other night"
"Main focus right now is getting the 1st team back on track"

I'm still waiting for Walcott and Reyes to turn into Henry. Gooner and their obsession about the next Henry is the same as our obsession with next Keano.
On another note. Danny must be already regretting the move.

Arsenal have developed a small club mentality. I think for fans who've been watching football for 10+ years, they're a big club, but the players themself behave like a team that is happy with 3rd-4th and the odd cup win.

The celebrations when they qualified for FA cup was what made me think this and they seem to behave like that subsequently, on the pitch and in the transfer market.

Need a striker to complete the piece and challenge for the title? Solution: Buy Danny Welbeck.

So today's presser confirms that this wasn't a case of a player who wanted to leave, against the will of his manager.

Fair play to Van Gaal for being so honest and so blunt. I just hope he isn't hoist by his own petard.
An awful lot of the media coverage from people close to the club suggests he did want to leave and had made that known both last season and this summer. Whether that was an idle threat designed to strengthen his position I don't know.

What a load of old wank. You're destined for another 25 years without the title. It's over.

Yes because we've obviously spent the whole summer chasing Danny Welbeck haven't we? That is like me saying you desperately need a world class midfielder and you sign Blind. In both cases those players were viable fall back solutions because you can't always get your first choice.

And in case you've forgotten we did sign Alexis Sanchez earlier this summer as well.

No, he preferred him to go out on loan, just like Hernandez.

Looking at the price, I think a lot of people here are considering his potential or the few matches in the last couple of years he played upfront and did well at times. But he's nearly 24 and you don't really pay for potential at this stage, if it remains unlocked. Nor do you look at just 10 of the last 70 matches the guy played. English talent hype no longer applies, because his stock is down. 16 million was fine.

Have you signed Fabregas yet? And I guarantee we will win the league before you do.

Arsenal will probably be busy trying to get past the round of 16 again in the CL, You know, when a true footballing juggernaut puts you back in your place.

Madness. He's much better centrally.

How the feck can anyone rate Danny out wide is beyond me. His goal/assist/win ratio as a wide player is dreadful. While the exact opposite is true for him being a CF.

I still think Arsenal have got a bargain, as long as they play him in the middle!

The ongoing situation was fairly obvious for me. Welbeck had been narked by Moyes' implication in December 2013 that he should train as hard as Rooney, the manager at that point was still going through his very own ongoing process of fellating Wayne Rooney. Welbeck publicly came out and rebuked what Moyes had indicated.

Welbeck then found himself playing as central striker for a period of time and delivered a healthy return. He was then, along with Januzaj, dropped as soon as Rooney and Van Persie returned. He would only play on the wings when Moyes was indirectly instructed to do so from Gary Neville's seat in the Sky studio. He had a poor relationship with the manager, was worried about his future and was setting himself up for a move in the summer. I have no issue with that. This was reported heavily by our whole beat, as well as chief football writers.

Van Gaal comes in, Welbeck is clearly happy to stay under a new, exciting manager that he may believe will opt for a 433, whereby he'll get plenty of game time. Welbeck conducted an interview just before the World Cup in which he stated he was looking forward to life under Van Gaal.

Over the course of the summer Van Gaal decides that Rooney and Van Persie are his main men and if Daniel Taylor is to be believed the Club has been on the lookout for another striker with "dynamism" for 12 months now. James Wilson's rise in reputation throws a spanner in the works and Welbeck is ultimately informed that he won't get many games under the new regime. Welbeck then decides, for the good of his club and national team career, that he'll be better served leaving the club and getting game time elsewhere. Understandly, he moves to the best club possible. All parties, for the most part, seem satisfied.

If you've followed the media reports from creditable people within the industry - and they are directly sourced by Welbeck's very talkative camp - then I think this is a likely scenario. Basically, nobody has done much wrong here and the accusations flying around are mostly bollocks.
