Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

It's Arsene being his usual self.

What he probably meant was that if he was in London and seen to be actively pushing a move, United might have pulled out of any deal, or asked for way too much.

Yeah, that's plausible.

"So listen, Arsene's out of town. You ok to do business now?"

"Hell yes. Just do us a solid and keep this on the down low. We hate that French twat and wouldn't be talking to you if he was in town."

Some people are stuck on cloud cookoo land if they think Welbeck was worth 26m when the likes of Diego Costa are going for 32m, thought we got a very good price for a third choice and average (so far) striker.

Yeah, that's plausible.

It does seem a little daft, but AW can be relied upon for eccentric reasonings.

Also stressing that he has the perfect qualities to play centrally. If you read the quotes on the Arsenal website it's obvious he was happy to sign Welbeck. My guess is that he would have pushed for a loan deal because he didn't think United would sell him to Arsenal. Surprised that representatives had managed to get him permanently he jumped at the chance.

It's going to be so weird watching him play for Arsenal against City this weekend.

Welbeck signed a five year permanent deal and, asked if he would initially have preferred a loan, Wenger said: “With an option to buy yes. In the end, when it was a permanent transfer or loan with an option to buy, I was happy to buy permanently."

Asked to clarify if that meant he favoured a loan, Wenger added: "At start of day, he was only available on loan. At the end of the day, I agreed.”

Of deadline day – and the criticism of his trip to Rome – “Wenger said: “If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here. The coincidence made it. If I stayed in my home, Welbeck would not be here. I will tell you that story one day. That is the truth. We are in 2014, you can always be in touch.”

The only way I'd interpret that is that Wenger would not have paid the £16m fee. I would speculate that we intended on sending him out on loan originally, which due to the lower cost Wenger agreed with, but then someone came in with an offer (presumably the same as what Arsenal ended up paying) and it forced their hand.

I'm guessing Wenger would have preferred the money to be available (either on deadline day or January) for a defensive midfielder judging from his comments after the Giroud injury.

Asked if he wanted to take Welbeck on loan, Wenger replied: “With an option to buy, yes. At the start the player was only available on loan but after he became available to buy, I agreed.

I thought when they bought Falcao they had to let somebody go and I was not aware at the start [that United would sell to Arsenal] when I heard that he could be available. It was quick because it was on the last day of the transfer window and I had no hesitation to do it.”

Wenger attracted a great deal of criticism for spending deadline day in Rome, where he took part in a charity game named the ‘Match for Peace’ to promote religious harmony, but the Arsenal manager cryptically claimed that Welbeck would not be an Arsenal player had he not made the trip to Italy.

“If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here,” he said. “I'll explain that a bit later but the coincidence made that [deal] because I was on my way. If I stayed at home, Welbeck would not be here today.

“I will tell you that story one day but that's the truth. We are in 2014 and you can always be in touch with everybody even when you travel. The advantage of that day was I had to get up at 6am and I was available the whole day.”

"We lost an important striker in Olivier Giroud so we were short of numbers up front. Danny Welbeck was an ideal signing for us. He can play through the middle, which I think is his best position, but as well on the flanks.

"He brings his qualities and his team attitude, which is very important for us, his pace as well, and as you could see with England, his goalscoring. His attitude as a young boy - he is not yet 24 - let's not forget that some players who arrived here aged 23 made huge careers here, so I hope we can contribute and help him."

That's a very strange thing to say. I hope Danny reads it.

I think he has been misquoted, I'll need to see the video to confirm but it looks like he was trying to say he sanctioned the signing on a loan deal as he thought at the time that was the only option.

Ah. Ok. That makes a lot more sense. He's saying that because he had to travel he was up much earlier than usual, which meant Arsenal were able to get the go-ahead from him earlier than they would have otherwise.

Arsenal get spanked by City on Saturday, Welbeck anonymous:

'He was never top class/Wasn't good enough to get into our side/Arsenal are welcome to him, we have RvP/Falcao/Rooney'.

Arsenal smash Villa next Saturday, Welbeck scores a couple:

'Why did we ever let him go?/He's showing his quality now :(/Could've really done with his pace against Leicester'.

Ad nauseam for the rest of the season.

That's much less sensationalist than the earlier 'quotes' suggested, and in fact makes sense.

Unsurprisingly, I guess.

Indeed. At the end of the season we can tally up how many games fit in each category and decide whether or not Van Gaal dropped a bollock.

Same will apply to each game United play, with regards to the bigger picture about whether he's done a good job as a manager overall.

That's football.

As I've posted elsewhere, we bought RvP for 24m and sold them Welbeck for 16m. So we effectively bought RvP for 8m + Welbeck and then had Welbeck loaned back to us for 2 seasons.

How any of you think Arsenal have "got a bargain" out of this is utterly mental.

So we actually wanted to loan him and not sell him. I wonder why Welbeck didn't agree to that deal.

theres already rumors that both giggs and lvg were against him leaving permanently. I found it weird united were asking so much money for the loan and teams such as Arsenal and Spurs were willing to pay it. But Welbeck wanted the move to be permanent. I'm guessing he didn't want to deal with the uncertainty?

 That's very good.

Truth is though, GB, we have taken RvP from them for 24m and sold them Welbeck for 16m. I understand lots of posters develop sentimental attachment to players who've been at the club since youth, but to me, that's good business.

The loan thing makes sense too. Even if it had an option to buy, it would still mean Welbeck couldn't play against United. Which could have been critical in Arsenal's campaign for top four (and United's)

I guess from his point of view knowing that Falcao was coming in and having RvP & Rooney to contend with he possibly pushed for a permanent deal rather than loan. At his age he needs to know exactly where his future lies so you can't blame the guy either.

Nah, RvP was part of the Silvestre deal. Obviously.

Welbeck probably remembers what happened to Rossi at Newcastle. Loanees don't always get the opportunities they deserve.

Be great business in a couple of years when RVP is wheeled out on a zimmerframe into the centre circle

Welbeck vs Kagawa next week. Both players' threads will be very busy one way or the other.

Can't wait!

Career first, club second.
I'm pretty sure that you're right. The reason I bought that up was that Welbeck made that decision for the good of his career and he has my full respect for that. He's now moved on now, putting his needs over the club he grew up at, which is a fair call IMO. But now, we should move on too.

I think Wenger wants to wash his hands off what seems like a last minute snap decision.

Precisely. Why he fecked off on deadline day when his club was still looking to be active in the market is just sheer craziness.
He probably wasn't planning to be active on deadline day until Giroud got injured and he most likely had already given his word to ref the charity match by then.
