Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

Well done Danny, you needed a move and you've gone to a very good club, with a good manager. Wouldn't blame you given its clear you were never considered as starting 11 material. The problem being you could not be trusted to score the goals when it really mattered.

Of course this transfer window is not a zero sum game between us and Arsenal. Danny could turn into a wonderful player for Arsenal and United could have a great run with the players we brought in. It could turn into a win-win.

Forgive us for being sentimental about a very good player who was with United since he was 8 fecking years old.

And the same Welbeck who's shown more than Wilson has done in bigger and more important games. What a useless point.

Not a useless point. I think the game against MK Dons was the final nail in the coffin as far as Welbeck's United career is concerned. It was for a few players, including Kagawa.

Who got injured and came off in the 20th minute.

He didn't show anything in the time he was on the pitch. Van Gaal's opinions of these players will not have been based on one game, but the game against MK Dons was the final nail in the coffin for Kagawa and Welbeck, as I say.

The problem with Kagawa and Welbeck fanatics is they don't seem to grasp the simple point that these players weren't productive enough to start most games for us. Welbeck would've forced his way into the starting 11 if he was good enough. Same goes for Kagawa.

All players have off days, even against MK Dons. My honest opinion is that LVG had very little to no faith in the current crop of players even before he started to work. He already wanted to bring his own players in and overhaul the squad.

Kagawa was done before that game, lets be honest. The Welbeck one was a surprise to most people.

I don't get why some people are turning this into Welbeck v Falcao. RVP's been injury prone for years and didn't look the slightest bit interested last season. He probably has 1-2 years max left in him at this level. Surely Falcao replacing him would have made more sense?

Football is about building squads that provide different options. Welbeck's athleticism, build up play and tactical flexibility were very useful for us. We tended to be a better team with him than without him. On top of that he had our best conversion rate and goals to minutes ratio (minus pens) last season. So goal scoring was becoming less and less of a problem to him.

And at 23 he still has potentially another 10 years playing at the highest level.
This all makes sense, as do other posters who seem angry and confused about this transfer. But we've also got to take into account that it's not just games that the coaches see the players in - there's been hours and hours of training sessions and that can be enough to make a call on a player.

Should we really be selling a player like that to Arsenal?? In 2 years Rooney, RVP and Falcao will all be in their 30's. Welbeck will be 25.

Very true and it can be a scary thought. But I'll back the club and assume they've already taken this into consideration and have decided they can go out and spend 50m for a world class striker when the time's right, etc. Who knows what happens? James Wilson could be the next Michael Owen, Falcao could score 30 goals a season until he's 32, we could sign Ronaldo and play him up front until he's 35, Welbeck might want to come back in 3 years, etc. Enjoy the ride instead of looking at it with doom and gloom.

The problem is that we'll both be competing for the last CL spot. Welbeck could easily put them over the top in that race.

Has there not been no mention of a buy back clause yet?

I've been googling like a madman ever since we sold him to find an article that suggests there is one, anything even goal.com or tribal football would make me sleep better but there's no evidence of one existing.

The same set of fans who cheered when they thought the deal wasn't on.. Christ you'd think they've just signed Lionel Messi the way they are behaving on twitter.

And these are the same fans on here that defended him against his critics, but now he's at Arsenal he's suddenly rubbish.

See I can make idiotic generalisations too.

I don't think Wenger would have agreed to such a deal.

feck my life. He's going to suddenly turn clinical now, won't he?
Nope. He's no Diego Forlan. Shit, he isn't even a Giuseppe Rossi. Failures at United/Successes elsewhere.

As a few have said previously, he's scored for England while he was with us and converted that into very little with United. Come the end of the season, I'm fairly confident we'll be laughing at that £16 million price tag.

We have one for Lawrence. But thats for 11m and we sold him for 1m...

I just cant see us being that reckless..Arse had one for Fabregas and that was the same price as what they sold him for.
We did Arse a massive favour. I just cant see us not including one and them not agreeing to it, and not for something stupid like 30m

The only time we were decent in that game was when Kagawa was on the pitch, but that's besides the point. I don't think it was the final nail in the coffin for anyone. In fact I think Van Gaal would have preferred to keep them both if they would be fine with it. The problem was that we had world class players in those positions in front of them, and both of them wanted to be starting 11 players. Not quite the same thing as last nail in the coffin where Van Gaal makes them leave.

What I dont get is this. Is it not the problem Welbeck wanted to go to Arsenal of all clubs. He's a local lad, nice guy and all but he wanted Arsenal, our rivals.

If you were given a choice of Sunderland, Tottenham (loan) or Arsenal, who the farq would you pick?

Arsenal aren't really rivals. I couldn't give a feck about them. City and Liverpool are our rivals.

Arsenal v United's rivalry hasn't been as crazy as it was in ~2000s. Personally I don't give two feck about it for like 5 years but I expected something better from Welbeck, a Manchester lad .

Well, not mad at him but I guess the whole rationality is overrated.

I am afraid the Welbeck decision was a poor one for the many reasons:

1. Apart from the unproven Wilson was our youngest forward with a great injury record
2. His goals to minuets ratio are good considering the tracking back he does and his overall contribution
3. We have spent huge chunk of his transfer fee on player who is here only on loan.
4. Danny had passion and love for Man Utd (as opposed to players here predominantly for monetary reasons)
5. Never gave less than 110%
6. He has not peaked unlike others in our forward line
7. His pace on the break is vital and the PL suits this type of player
8. He is great with the ball at feet in tight areas of the pitch

I am afraid LVG, having only been in post for a very short period of time has made a huge call on a player he cannot of known that well.
Wenger, the most experienced manager in the PL who has seen much more of Welbeck than LVG did not waste any time in making a bid. Is this telling?

Of course we have to look forward but if our hired "big name" from Monaco and RVP get injuries we could quickly look lightweight up top.
This could all end up with the headstrong LVG not looking like the untouchable genius many on here think he is.

Personally called Welbeck's agent/brother in the morning to get the deal under-way.

It's likely that Wenger will have been following Welbeck's progress since he first broke through in the youth teams. He'll also have full scouting reports from when United played Arsenal in recent years.

would not mind to see him doing well, just has a stinker whenever playing against us and don't score that's all.

as much as i would like to see an academy product like welbeck stays, he is never going to be a regular starter as a no.9 and i could not say no to falcao too. and he wants to leave.

I'm struggling to understand the ongoing sentimentality and sadness over Welbeck's move to Arsenal. Yes, he was a youth product and a Manchester lad but that doesn't give him a birthright to play in our team. In fact, despite being a local lad, he was the one who chose to leave Manchester United and move to one of our biggest rivals over the last two decades. So much for loyalty/sentimentality! I will always have more affection for someone like Solskjaer (who is said to be a Liverpool fan) who was always loyal to us and didn't move despite always being a super-sub.

That being said, it is annoying that Welbeck had to move to Arsenal of all clubs. However, at the end of the day, he was clearly not good enough for our first team and I am thrilled to have Falcao as a replacement. Hopefully by the end of the season we will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Read it on Arsenal Mania, so I should have said 'apparently.'

But Wenger has a habit of personally contacting players or the agents of players he wants to sign - Ozil and Sanchez being recent ones. I'm sure it's not an uncommon thing.

This thread is going to end up being an absolute classic. The meltdown that Welbeck leaving has caused is beyond comprehension.

Arsenal aren't really rivals. I couldn't give a feck about them. City and Liverpool are our rivals.

Ridiculous statement. Of course they are rivals and at this moment in time one of the teams we need to overtake to get back into Europe.

A lot of bitterness floating around in here. How about folks just wish all the best for him and move on or maybe that will be easier done once Falcao starts banging them in in a way that Danny never will.

I think Welbeck would enjoy being the central striker in a 433, the way Welbeck plays suits it, and Arsenal I'd say.

I don't think Welbeck is suited to a 352, he didn't show much in preseason or in our first 3 games.

Don't forget LvG said it was Kagawa's unwillingness or inability to play in the manner LvG wished that meant he was surplus, not his lack of quality.

Something similar may have been the case with Welbeck.

Falcao scoring would probably end the complaints, agreed.
