Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

He was our youth player. We were lucky to get that amount. Just look at the list below for how much we got for our previous Academy graduates (above £1m);

Beckham to Real 25m (exception)
Welbeck to Arsenal 16m
Phil Neville to Everton 3.5m
Frazier Campbell to Sunderland 3.5m
Nicky Butt to Newcastle 2.5m
Phil Bardsley to Sunderland 2m
Danny Higginbottom to Derby 2m

None of those are even remotely comparable.

I don't understand why, after the last two games we've played people are still arguing you need another variant in our attacking player to create adequate chances. Yes we failed to score against Spurs but it could and should have been at least 3-0 at half time! Chance creation wasn't the problem, for some reason everyone was having an off day in front of goal. The 2nd half was a write off because the players were shattered from player so soon after the newcastle game.

Spurs also pressed us very high up the pitch in that second half. Something they could do without any real risk, as neither of our strikers had the pace to hurt them if we hit them on the break.

The big problem is that Danny sees himself as a main striker that will shoulder the scoring burden of a team. He also has high ambitions and wants to get as far as he can.

I personally see Danny as an excellent defensive attacker like Kuyt and Park only miles better and far more adaptable.

Really? You mean those constant balls over the top from where we should've scored a bucket load in the first half never really happened? Direct balls from turnover. This place is becoming a joke.

Given how RvP got behind their defence at least three times, at least once in the second half, makes me disagree with you. For me pace is this thing that everyone keeps bleeding on about but whats the point of pace if the end result is a goal kick? Our forwards are smart enough not to need to rely on pace solely - never-the-less Falcao is hardly slow.

I'd go along with this and think the left side of a attacking 3 is the best position for him, out there his failings as a player (finishing) is ignored and he can use his pace/strength to get behind fallbacks. I dont think its any coincidence that SAF saw that as his best position and LvG to a less extent.

Ah. My mistake. Should have recognised the username and dumbed down my point a bit more the first time I made it. Apologies.

No. I'm not talking about opportunities like the ones we created in the first half as Teddy fecking Sheringham could have got on the end of them. A perfectly timed run and pass in the opposition third doesn't need a quick striker to be effective. Which is why I specifically mentioned the second half, when we were defending deeper and having a striker who could run quicker than opposing defenders - over longer distances - would have posed more of a problem for Spurs. They would have certainly had to be a bit more cautious when it came to throwing men forward to press us in our own half, which was how they shut us down.

Can't believe I had to do so much typing to make a simple point. This place is becoming a joke, right?

Yes, exactly.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, when we did get in behind its because Spurs were shit, when we couldn't it was because our strikers weren't fast enough. The fact of the matter is we did get in behind regularly, we also got in behind in the second half, if we were doing it anyway why would a speed merchant make any difference? Our problem was all out starting XI played less than 48 hours earlier, they were visibly fecked and the simplest of passes went wayward, doesnt matter how fast you are if you don't get the right supply in the first place.

Spurs were pressing in the first half, which is why the long ball was working so well, which is why we were getting in behind! But hey, youve cracked it - 'its coz they int fast nuff'.

I feel we could have really used him during the winter fixtures. We're lacking in pace and power, exactly what Welbeck has. He would have linked up with di Maria amazingly.

Welbeck has yet to consistently deliver at the level Kuyt delivered at.

More talented sure, but he's not even there yet.

What happened to Danny? Not in the Arsenal first XI now that Walcott and Ozil are back?

I think hes been injured, however yeah I would imagine he will struggle to get into the 11, with Giroud back and Walcott and Ozil now fit.

Just read this post

He's working extremely hard, Bellerin keeps getting caught out of position and Ramsey is providing no cover, so his defensive performance has been crucial so far. On a yellow though no so will have to be careful.

Think we'd look better as a team with him here.
Agreed but that's under the assumption he would be willing to be on the wing/a sub. He clearly wasn't willing to do this anymore so may have just turned out to be a negative influence.

Not really sure why LvG wasn't willing to give him a chance. Surely it had to be more to do with Welbeck wanting out / wanting to be a starter. Would have been a good squad player but has become massively overrated on here in his absence.

That's exactly it, really. I don't think LVG would've been particularly adverse to keeping him, but once Welbeck wanted to leave because his playing time here was going to be limited, he wasn't too against selling him either. Which is fair enough, really.

Far far better on the wing. Arsenal look worse since he's moved to center forward

Edit: cracking effort that

Don't get what posts like this add to be honest, yes people are discussing Danny Welbeck in the Danny Welbeck thread.

That's true, I apologise for that. It's just rather predictable. As soon as he pulled off that assist, I knew people would come to this thread and praise him/say that it was a mistake we sold him.

I'll leave now, but it's just something on the Caf' that irritates me.
