That's true, I apologise for that. It's just rather predictable. As soon as he pulled off that assist, I knew people would come to this thread and praise him/say that it was a mistake we sold him.

I'll leave now, but it's just something on the Caf' that irritates me.

Why does it iritate you? I wish we still had him, but understand people ddn't.

It always goes both ways in this thread. He does something good, selling him was a massive mistake. He does something shite, he's a terrible footballer. The truth lies somewhere in the middle of that.

Spot on.

Apart from the play for their goal he did absolutely feck all, people need to stop being sentimental with him. As much as I like him, he wouldn't improve us at all.

Wait a minute, didn't he leave United because he wanted to play as a striker? So what was he doing on the wing today?

He's their 2nd choice centre forward. I'm sure he knew he'd likely operate from wider areas some of the time as they have Giroud but he also knows when Giroud is out he'll be in. Unlike at United where he was 4th or 5th in the queue.

He left because he was told by the manager that he wouldn't get many games given we were buying Falcao and looking to promote Wilson.

He was boxed into a corner and duly left the club. Playing as a central striker has always been his main objective but he's said as recently as last summer that he enjoys playing as a wide forward, just like he does so successfuly for the national team.

Strange critique.

Boxed into a corner? It was said that he wanted to leave during Moyes's reign and I don't think that much changed since then. He wasn't good enough to play in the position that he wanted. Is that really being boxed into a corner?

He wanted to leave even before LVG came in because he was playing in wide areas most of the time. It was known that he wanted to leave when Moyes was in charge.

I think he said before that he doesn't mind play on the wing as part of a 433 (done it for England quite a few times) but it's playing out wide in a 442 that he's not so keen on.

He has great pace, but offers too little else and isn't close to being prolific enough in front of goal. I miss him at United seeing he was a local lad, but in terms of quality, he may not ever be good enough, nor did he seem content being a squad player.

Oh is it, I didn't see him on the pitch post Walcott. I hope Danny keeps his place when Walcott, Giroud and Ozil are on the team. He has played well for them without scoring too many goals.
Very little chance of that imo. Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott behind Giroud is/should be their front 4, for me.

Surely Santi gets the nod over Ozil when all are fit
I don't think there's a chance Santi plays over Ozil regularly. Ozil has 3 goals in 3 games as well, coming into some form.

I guess I see Santi more than just goals and assists he actually contributes more all round to their games. Where as Ozil is a passenger. But who cares hope they end up 6th

I'm excluding my opinion on the players, just that I think Wenger will play that front four when they're all fit. I don't see them dropping their record signing for Santi over a long period.

He did want to leave under Moyes. He wasn't playing very much after good form around the Christmas period and his camp leaked that he wanted out around about March time. Moyes was subsequently sacked, seems some players that were looking likely to leave now fancied staying, and he gave an exclusive interview in the summer detailing that he was happy here, while touching on the position issue. It was there he stated he has no problem with his position for England, and that's it's very different to the 442 we played here at United.

Welbeck would still be here if Van Gaal had made it clear to him he'd be getting lots of action, I'm certain of that.

So he needed assurance that he'll be given game time, when Van Gaal wouldn't give him that. Well, how is that being boxed into any corner? He'll play the same role he played for us at Arsenal.

It's a turn of phrase. With the arrival of Falcao and the promotion of Wilson it was clear to Welbeck that his game time would be very limited, hence he left with the blessing of manager and club.

Arsenal wanted him and have clearly planned to play him a lot more than Van Gaal planned to.

So he play on the wing today?

Oh the irony.

Not sure where the irony exist as he is getting more game time at Arsenal then he would at United despite our underperforming strikers. Our do you believe he left because he just soley wanted to play as a striker? if it is the latter, you are well misinformed and I will quote some that is informed.

Nevertheless, watching his performance today, it is frustrating to see what our attack would have been had we kept him. Our pre-season form was outstanding and him with Rooney alongside Herrerra was the catalyst towards such good performances. Van Persie and Falcao performances has not been good enough to say that it was the right decision to let him go. Wilson development is perhaps the only valid argument towards his departure. Wilson will learn much more and perhaps get more chance with Falcao and Van Persie at United then Welbeck.

All in all, I think it was a good decision for him to leave. I'm not really sure about going to Arsenal if his problem was not playing as a central striker. But meh.

So far he has scored 4 league goals and more than a half of the season is gone, I wonder if all the guys that said before the season kicked in that he'll hit 10-20 goals are still backing that up.

He wanted to *play*, position was secondary. That is according to Wenger - who said he (Welbeck) wouldn't always play up front but that he would get plenty of game time.

I agree with your first point. But like I said, he doesn't have a problem, at least not outwardly, with playing on the left of a front three. He's said he enjoys it. If he was going to get games on the left side of a front three at United he would still be here, but I think it's quite clear that he just wasn't going to get anything under Van Gaal, for reasons I have given.

I think playing as a central striker is something he desperately wants to do but I don't think that impacted on his decision to leave in any great way.

Absolutely, as hard as he works, he's just not good enough to be starting at a club like United.
