Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

Under SAF we put him on the left for the entire 2013 season, with rvp and Rooney up top. With moyes it was basically the same with a few more games up front.

Needless to say he didn't like it
We didn't play a 4-4-2 in either of those seasons.

The differences between the formations are fairly negligible, especially when two of the attacking three in a 4-2-3-1 are wingers and the central player is Rooney, who is a striker.

sure you can do it on a school yard with no one pressing

another story is doing it at the highest level, saying that that wasn't anything special is just being bitter tbf

Seriously? It's not bitterness I couldn't careless about welbeck anymore but I see it in sunday league games all the time it's really not hard to do at all it's a simple scoop pass .

Had a good game yesterday and was unlucky to have his goal disallowed. The ref was clueless last night. How he missed Tiote's kick in Sanchez's chest is beyond me. And then he disallows Welbeck's goal too. Welbeck is a proper team player. Always tracks back and helps the midfield - good to see.

For me he clearly pushed the defender over and the ref was quite correct in disallowing the goal.

Welbeck may be "a proper team player" but then again he always was that here. What he wasn't, and still isn't, is a central striker. Wasn't that why he left, because he wanted to play in the middle? To my mind everything he's done at Arsenal so far has mirrored his time here. Surely even his most ardent admirers will now have to recognise he's simply not the goalscorer a central striker needs to be.

Noticed quite often that any post related to Welbeck makes some people defend United's decision to sell him. I feel it's time to let that go. Why bring in the transfer over and over again?

I don't think he fouled the defender in the build up to his disallowed goal. It was a poor decision. Giroud has a much better understanding with players around him, which is something Welbeck must work on. Him and Sanchez were in the 2v1 situation yesterday and both kept running so close to Coloccini that the chance was gone. He played a part in creating that chance and many others yesterday, but would do well to understand teammates better. It will come with time.

Took the words right out of my mouth. You could call the formation under Moyes as this 4231 but for me when the wingers in that system are relied upon to cover the fall backs i consider it 442 which is exactly what Welbeck and Valencia were asked to do.

In a true 4231 formation you would see one of the midfield holders to cover the fall back and the "winger" to come into the middle. Regardless, Welbeck was asked to always come back and defend something he doesnt have to do when he plays up top on the left in a 433.

He's playing quite well in fairness. Links up well Ox and Cazorla, wins the ball high up the pitch and I wouldn't say he's been too guilty of missing too many chances either.

He needs to compose himself sometimes in the final third, but he's still a handful with his pace and running in behind - something we lack massively. Done some neat stuff today, and was unlucky to get his goal ruled out. Was a nice composed finish.

It's amazing how composed his finishes are when the whistle has already gone. Similar to his "disallowed goal" against Bayern. Whatever club he plays for needs to hire someone to blow a whistle whenever he's got a chance and he'll score 30 goals a season.

Even if Welbeck doesn't score (which he did yesterday, nice chip but disallowed), he works hard and makes it possible for other players to score.

However, the counter attack 2 vs 1 he did feck up by not pulling Collocini wide

LOL

Sanchez got two assist, put in a workload which would count for 5 players and you dare say he wasn't good enough.

You're either deluded or blind.

(or a WUM ;) )
He didn't play well by his standards, for example he screwed up the counter with Welbeck by not playing the ball early enough.

Still seems the same story with Welbeck. General play good but not scoring enough. van Persie - 7 goals, Rooney - 6 goals, Mata - 5 goals compared to Welbeck's - 3 goals.

Of course he's young and can still improve but I've been saying that for a while now.

I have a feeling you are not a big fan of Sanchez?

He'll be lucky to get 10 goals in the league this season, never mind 20.

I can see him getting dropped from the wing when Ozil is fit. He'll be back up to Giroud

A nothing player. Not a big loss. Thougj some will feel we should have kept him because he has sentimentality value.

meh.

he will come good.

I'm not sure that he will. He's going to have the exact same problems at Arsenal with his playing time/progression that he had here, although he'll probably do decent overall.

When Arsenal have everyone fit, Ozil and Walcott back, he won't be starting for them, will he?

His overall play is way bellow his level in recent month or two which looks bigger concern for me than lack of goals. He is not getting into good positions, but it's not like Arsenal are creating much either.

He was sold because he's not a goal scorer. I still think he's been decent for Arsenal at times despite the lack of goals.

People will still be saying he'll turn a corner and become a goalscoring machine when he's 30. Based on nothing whatsoever really. Not a bad player, but no loss either.

Where people really expecting much else from him?

Don't get me wrong, he will have one season where everything he hits goes in, almost every striker does and suddenly everyone will be declaring that he has come of age and look how stupid United were for getting rid of him (just like they were bleating at the beginning of the season).
But he has fundamental flaws in his game that he isn't addressing that run deeper than just not being in form or lack of confidence.
