Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

Man needs to learn how to shoot without falling over. Horrendous technique. Can't think of many goals he's scored where he strikes the ball cleanly

He hasn't had many shots, to be fair. I think he's only had 2 shots today, one of which was disallowed, and the other which was a volley. However, given how often Arsenal were threatening this half, Welbeck should do better to make himself more available for chances. He's a good finisher, but he somehow cannot take up good goalscoring positions through the middle.

I don't regret us letting him go, but I'd have him in the team over the current Mata if we still had him.

What's with the commentators and arsenal fans creaming themselves over that drag pass by welbeck, Was that actually classed as skill what welbeck just did?

Ermm pretty sure anyone that's ever kicked a football can do that kids included

sure you can do it on a school yard with no one pressing

another story is doing it at the highest level, saying that that wasn't anything special is just being bitter tbf

This game kind of sums him up to an extent. A disallowed goal that was a very nice effort admittedly, but with lots of tripping over and falling about as well.

Aye, did well to earn that one for them there.

So, his scoring record has been quite poor so far. No surprises there. Average player and he's no loss.

Henry should come in and give him some tips on how to keep your balance when striking the ball. He's all over the place in that respect.

There was a typical Welbeck situation in the first half when Sancez lobed the ball over to him. It wasn't a tap in but the ball deserved a more ferocious hit.

I'm not sure this is the right place, and feel free to delete this and rebuke me, but why does this thread stay open and kagawa one close, out of interest? It seems much the same to that thread. Not complaining that this should be closed, nor that reopened, I'm just curious.

6 out of 16 overall which isn't too bad, although obviously his hat-trick against Galatasaray skewed that a tad.

Certainly though, the people who expected him to suddenly turn into a superb goalscorer like Sturridge when he went to Liverpool were well off the mark.

I'd imagine it was because Mad Winger was largely keeping that thread alive with his constant Kagawa obsession. People do actually seem to want to talk about Welbeck more, especially with him being a youth product for United and such.

Maybe it's the youth product thing alright. Mad winger has been banned a while all the same and the thread kept going. Either way,off topic, I was just intrigued.

He needs to compose himself sometimes in the final third, but he's still a handful with his pace and running in behind - something we lack massively. Done some neat stuff today, and was unlucky to get his goal ruled out. Was a nice composed finish.

How long has it been since he scored a goal? Unless I missed something, it has been a while, correct?

Wenger's smart enough to see how many of their goals and how much of their best football is made possible by his work and creativity. He'll want to score, of course, but as long as they're playing him alongside Giroud, his inclusion won't be contingent on his goal tally.

He was good today and worked very hard, unlucky not to get a goal himself.

I think this wide striker position suits him to a tee. He's never going to be a prolific front man and isn't creative enough to play behind a front man. This wide position really masks his failings and highlight his strengths

He scored a good goal tonight which was unfairly chalked off when it wasn't even a foul in the buildup.

Just to be more dismissive, Galatasaray are absolute shite.

Be interesting to see if he starts when Walcott is fully fit. I think Wenger prefers Giroud as the main centre forward and Sanchez is obviously a cert.

I agree. I think it's clear why every manager he has played under has played him out wide a fair bit. His attributes suit it. Giroud is a better finisher and better in the air. Sanchez is a better finisher too, so I don't see him playing centrally ahead of either of them.

I know he doesn't enjoy it, but I think he's fine playing a wide midfield role as well, due to his hard work and physical strengths. He's a great ball winner and his link up in midfield is very good too. Even when he plays in a 4-3-3, he still defends well and will track back a hell of a lot.

Indeed. The worry for him is what happens when Ozil and Walcott come back, and if/when Arsenal buy an actual goalscoring striker.

I think he didn't like playing wide in a flat 442 in a 433 I don't think he'd mind that role

Yeah, that's what I meant. He didn't like playing wide in a 4-4-2, but he was definitely decent there for us, and it suited him and the team IMO. Though understandably he wants to be scoring goals, and not tackling overlapping full backs.

I think he's better wide in a 4-3-3 than 4-4-2, but regardless I predict his long term future is as a wide player and not a centre forward.

When did we last use a 4-4-2 regularly? Under Ferguson it was a 4-2-3-1, same with Moyes.

Under SAF we put him on the left for the entire 2013 season, with rvp and Rooney up top. With moyes it was basically the same with a few more games up front.

Needless to say he didn't like it

Danny was great today as was everybody (except Sanchez). Mobile, available, playing Wengerball and scored a neat goal (disallowed for Mason knows what).

To be fair he did score a magnificent chip, which was unfairly disallowed.
I think Welbeck clipped the defenders leg while running behind him which caused the foul. If memory serves asnl got a pen last week under similar circumstances so you can understand why it was deemed a foul and the goal disallowed
