Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

Have to laugh at the story saying Wenger may move Danny out on the wing when Giroud comes back.

Exactly. According to some members here Welbeck is a massive United lover and only left to play as a striker, but apparently he is perfectly content playing for Arsenal in the same exact position he played at United...

My two cents says Wenger will not move Welbeck to the wing regularly. Wenger never wants to be boxed in on what decisions to make, which is smart. Most likely why he made the statement. After all, Welbeck is versatile but everybody knows what his favored position is, and what kind of professional doesn't want to play in their favored position? It wasn't a smart question to ask, or the press are just after Wenger to make him seem clueless. I'd bet on the latter, but blame really rests on the media worshiping bunch.

It is not a new concept for managers to try and accomadate players to get the best out of your team. At United, we are accomodating Rooney in a deeper role to fit Van Persie and falcao. Welbeck does not have the attribute to be a great 'lone striker' because he is not predatory in the box nor is he selfish, so it is understandable to why Wenger would rather have a striker that has those desirable trait. As seen with us this pre-season, Welbeck thrieve off playing with another striker, so a player like Giroud who has great hold up ability and understand one touch interplay could benefit Welbeck and Arsenal. In particular at the cost of Carzola who has been poor for Arsenal this season. It is not like Welbeck is incapable of performing out wide, it is just how he is used in that system that matters. At United, he was used as a restricted winger which was not the right way to use him.

Just had a realisation of how sad it is that Welbeck is playing against United. Something sad about a player who supporter United all his life and was at the club for 15 years, being sold to a rival because a new manager doesn't rate him. I guess that's the reality of it, but still somewhat of a shame.

Made a decent start so far, wouldn't be shocked if he got a goal.

Typical Danny I thought.

Decent link up and hold up play. But more often than not making the wrong decision in the final third.

Giroud will get back in to the starting 11 quite easily and Welbeck will either go on the bench or out wide.

Typical welbeck performance and personally when I saw he was starting I was pleased. He needs half a dozen chances to score.

I think the bench awaits him. AOC had a great game and Walcott is due back. This game had the worst possible outcome for him, for multiple reasons.

He's a good footballer, but he's just not what you need from a first choice striker at a top club. Can you imagine the drop off for city if City went from aguero to welbeck? While Rvp isn't working out right now and falcao is unfit that's the standard of player we have to try and have uptop.

He will go on the bench because they have better wide players than him.

I think he will find out the meaning of Ferguson words: “Sometimes you look in a field and you see a cow and you think it’s a better cow than the one you’ve got in the field. It’s a fact, right, and it never really works out that way. It’s probably the same cow and it’s not as good as your own cow. Some players like to think there’s a better world somewhere else. It never really works.”

I can't recall the number of times where he slipped or fluffed his chances. Welbeck needs to learn to smash the ball convincingly and not lose balance/confidence at the most decisive moment.

Heh. I've been wanting to use that quote all day long

I said in the England match day thread he'd be tapped out after the goals he scored for England .

It'll take him after another game to score again.

That's the Danny we know and can now love. Saw the difference between him and Rooney today. Rooney takes his one chance while Welbeck messes up his five or so.

As I've said all along, Giroud is a far better number 9. Welbeck has his qualities but he isn't a natural number 9 at all.

Typical Welbeck in many respects. Worked hard, played relatively well and even had some half-decent chances, but just wasn't clinical enough overall.

At the end of the day, barring any meteoric improvement, Welbeck is a useful squad player to have in a team.

Will he lead be able to lead the line for a genuine title contender/winner? Probably not and he will likely never break the 20 goal plateau (in the Prem).

Hopefully he wont get buried on the bench for them now that giroud is back.

When he signed for Arsenal I said in the newbs that it is one thing being loved at your own club but being a 16 mn signing for another club carries its own pressure. I think if he played for us like he did today he wouldn't get much criticism because he did ok but if you are an Arsenal fan you genuinely question the idea of signing him.

Indeed. Wenger has his work cut out in order to mould him into a true centre forward. I thought today he showed glimpses that he has improved slightly in that regard at Arsenal, but still a long long way to go.

The way he played today is pretty much the way he played for us. His application or work ethic was never in question. He done some good things today but ths crux of it is, he isn't natural in front of goal and can't be relied upon in that respect.

They should try playing him out wide.
You would have thought that's bound to happen now Giroud is back. But who would you drop? Sanchez or the Ox? They were 2 of Arsenal's brightest players today.

Why we sold him was evident today: Simply not good enough to be a guaranteed starter at an elite team.

I know that hurts the sentiments of those who demand local players at the heart of our team, but if they are not good enough, they don't deserve to play.

Will struggle to be top dog now Giroud is back. Will be interesting to see how Wenger now uses him, and if he starts wingeing again when invariably he is shunted out onto the left wing.

Let's see how long it takes for him to start bitching about playing out wide. Giroud will start at Striker.

I'm always shocked if he gets a goal.
 I was thinking today, how good is to play against a team who have as their man striker Welbeck. Well yes, he can occasionaly score but he doesn't do that a lot. Every time he was in good positions to score, I was really calm.

It was also quite funny to see him doing a Bambi on the first half.

As shaky as we looked at times it was always a bit of a relief knowing it was only Welbeck up front. Whenever Sanchez got on the ball around our area I almost shat myself and when Giroud came on you just knew he was going to get one.
