Is it just me, or does he seem a bit more selfish in front of goal these days? As in always looking to fashion a shooting chance for himself, even when passing might be the better option. Not necessarily a bad thing, but maybe it stems from him trying to prove some kind of point . . .

He's much more confident in his abilities to be that main striker that's for sure. He probably needed that move where people scrutinized his goal record because he's a very important part of the starting line up whereas he got scrutinized because he wasn't getting close to matching the records of more established players. And in his view from interviews that's unfair because he was played out wide to do a more rounded job up and down the pitch for United. For England he's regularly done well even when with us as he's more of an inside forward from the left. At United he was very good in build up but shirked when the responsibility to be a killer finisher in front of goal. Always hesitated like he shouldn't have been there. It's a good thing that he's developing an arrogance as a striker. He was a team player for United because we used his qualities to be someone to come in and out, do a job, let the main men take risks. At Arsenal he has to be that man taking risks. He'll do well.

Well, back when he played for United he had an awful shot on target and goal record. Nowadays he doesn't feck up in the final third as much, so he gets way more shots on goal. It also helps that United midfield was not creative enough for years.

Wenger on Welbeck: "One reason we bought him was because he wanted to play. Playing centrally wasn't a condition"

On the wing it is.

I could understand sticking Welbeck on the wing if we had someone like van Persie or Rooney. But for Giroud? :wenger:

I wouldn't get it too, my thought is that if you have to play them both then have them as a front two. Otherwise just let them compete for the lone striker role. Also, given the options Arsenal has on the wings, putting Welbz there would be a waste. Let's see what happens, but definitely puzzling words from Arsene there.

A shit load of "injury" scares for this weekend. Classic poker face tactics before a big game.

Arsenal's players will be fit, we'll have 9 fit from the first team squad, two U18's and bench full of U16's.

You just know he'll score. It will be interesting to see how he fits in when Giroud is fully fit though.

Can't decide if this is a stupid thing to say by LVG or a well thought out ploy.

He's going to be very fired up, maybe too much so but if he scores then Louis has set himself up for a fall.

I don't agree with his statement about Ferguson and Moyes both agreeing with him that Welbeck was only good enough to be a sub. Fergie picked him in so many of our biggest games that he certainly saw him as more than that.

Interesting comments. Guess it depends on Welbeck's mentality. Is this likely to spur him on so he does better? Or will it distract him significantly so he under performs?

While Welbeck prefers to play up top, he's already said he doesn't mind playing on the wing in a three man midfield, where he has more attacking freedom.
When he played on the left for us, he never really had that attacking freedom because we played a 2 man midfield. I mean, he plays on the wing for England pretty often and scores his fair share of goals.

Having said that, I don't think Arsene's comments immediately means he won't be played up top. Wouldn't really say he's done anything wrong up top for Arsenal. I guess it's just an option to have, though. Danny's a pretty versatile player.

But how can he possibly score goals from the wing? It's impossible.

If he plays wide in a 4-3-3 on a regular basis it means they won't be able to play Ozil or Sanchez in the number 10 role when everyone is fit. I really hope that's what they do.

I wish the media wouldn't just make up stories by twisting words and kind of 2+2=5 stuff. I don't think Lvg has anywhere said that he didn't rate Welbeck , if Danny was ready to sit on the bench and wait for his chance then I am pretty sure we would have kept him. At 23 he obviously wanted a starting place and the fact that Lvg let him leave to another big club is something I hope Danny appreciates rather than be bitter about it.

Agree with this, I think in general if Wenger picks Giroud over Welbeck then Welbeck will struggle to make the starting 11 unless a few players are injured.

Yea, It's just the media trying to stir things up.

The Daily Telegraph is just re-printing a story that is months old now. LvG is just saying the same thing he said when he sold him. Whether it was the right or wrong move, it's too early to say, but LvG has been consistent in his reasons for allowing Welbeck to leave.

It was Welbeck's choice to leave. If I recall correctly, van Gaal tells players what role they will be expected to play in the squad and lets them decide. Welbeck would have been told he is behind van Persie, Falcao and Rooney in the pecking order, and rightly so, and Welbeck didn't want that, which is fair enough.

Really? RvP and Falcao have hardly been huge hits this season. And Rooney isn't even playing up-front.

Exactly. Rooney can't seem get a game up front, when his only competition was RvP. There was no hope for Welbeck.

I don't think I've ever seen such revisionism about a player as with Danny Welbeck after joining Arsenal.

The BBC are running a story this morning with Paul Ince the latest person to say United have made a mistake.

He's scored two fecking league goals! In context, an out of sorts van Persie has scored more, as has Rooney, who has been playing in midfield and had a three game suspension. Falcao has only scored one less, and he's been pretty much crocked ever since arriving.

Yea when you look at it properly in context, it makes no sense at all. The only thing you could perhaps say is our 3 strikers are aging and hence keeping him would have been better but the counter argument is that these few chances are better off being given to Wilson.

Oh and the other argument could be that we helped out a direct rival. Fair enough, for this season but I hope we don't see them as rivals in the future.

When it comes to replacing our senior strikers, we need players far better than Welbeck. He's a 15-20 goal player, basically what Giroud is.

So Van Gaal said that the reason for selling Welbeck was that ,we had RVP and Wilson and if he had kept Welbeck we would not be giving youth a chance.Pathetic.
