Penny finally dropping at Arsenal (and hopefully United) that he's not actually that good?

I read one tweet yesterday that summarised Welbeck's entire club career.



He's certainly no better than Giroud, Walcott or Chamberlain (unless he's playing for England) and I'm guessing one of them has to be dropped for Welbeck to start. Arsenal look just as bad as they have in previous years, if not worse, and that's including having one of the best players in the world in Sanchez carrying them.

Still, I think the revisionism is tiresome. Just because he's an Arsenal player, half the Caf had decided that he's now a pretty useless footballer. When he was still at United, only a minority said he wasn't good enough. But I guess that's football fans for you. Fickle.

He's a good lad, United through and through and would much prefer to play for us under a manager who believed in him. Don't understand why so many United fans are to keen to bash him.

This is BS, by the way. We parked the bus, there was little room for him to operate in. All things considered, he caused us quite a few problems in the first half.
 
I think he's still a very good player and I'd rather he was still here than at Arsenal, but I think he is best in the position we played him in. You get the best of his abilities, without having to rely on him as the main source of goals.

Nah, it's not bs. It's your opinion, just like it's mine (and most of the world) that he's not as good as some of you like to make out.

:lol: how pathetic can you be to start slagging off your own players, unprompted at that, just because you've got some fetish for a player that used to play for us? RvP is in a bad rut of form and he may well be past it but age is a factor. Welbeck has never shown anything like what RvP has shown for Arsenal and United both to suggest a valid comparison can be made.

RVP is actually a world class player with a track record that's done the business for us in the past, its unsurprising that his form is dropping with age. You can't say the same about Welbeck.

It's something you'd expect from oppo fans but it's quite unbelievable we've got some nutters on here doing the same but actually slagging off our own players instead.

I'm simply trying to look at things with a pinch of objectivity, unlike so many United fans who used to think Welbeck was a good, promising striker and now slag him off at every single opportunity. That is pathetic.

I was simply trying to counter the logic that because a striker did not score in one game he is automatically useless at football.

He's a number 9 that isn't dangerous. He hardly caused us that many problems. I honestly believe that if a fully fit Giroud had of started, Arsenal would have won.

Nobody's saying he's useless at football, all that's been said is that he's not good enough as a striker. He has many good facets to his game, but unfortunately he falls down when it comes to the main job of a striker-putting the ball in the net. Two goals in - what - 10 or 11 league games is hardly any return for a striker.

Comparisons with RVP are pointless, RVP has proved in the past he can put the ball in the net. Maybe that's now in the past, I don't know. But RVP not putting the ball in the net doesn't make Welbeck a better player just because neither is scoring.

:confused: He was a lineup player under both Fergie and Moyes, even though that sometimes meant shoehorning him into the wrong position.
 
He's played in 13 games for Arsenal now and only scored in 3 matches. You can keep bringing up his hat-trick but unfortunately to only score in 3 out of 13 matches just isn't good enough for a top team playing in his favoured position.

It is absolutely bizarre and I can't get my head around it. It's not even as if this guy is setting the world on fire after leaving us.

It's actually pathetic. I saw a post in the match day thread from a newb saying he would love Welbeck to score against us to 'show' the United fans that don't rate him. That was probably the most pathetic post I have read on this place. A United fan actually saying that.

It's also sad how much our own fans have slagged off RvP, Falcao and Rooney, to make a case for how brilliant Welbeck is. I have never seem a more bizarre reaction to a transfer from the media, some Arsenal fans and our own fans.

He was let go mainly because of Wilson, not van Persie.

Because one team had the ball more than the other?

Should we compare him with Rooney and say how much better Welbeck was? Because i thought Rooney wasnt that great on the ball yesterday, granted he scored (and i love him for that!) but overall didnt contribute that much... Unlike the tireless Welbeck.

Precisely. No RvP means Rooney plays up front and Welbeck still isn't a "lineup player".
 
Bright play as usual. Mind-farts when it came to being decisive with the ball, as usual.

15 and 13 league starts in his last two seasons, with 10 and 14 sub appearances. He was the definition of a rotation player.

Rooney and Welbeck both played well. Just a pity they were on opposite teams because RvP was woeful.

Rooney i thought was really bad on the ball yesterday. There were a few moments where he really ruined good counter attack moves. But he scored and looked one of our better players so you cant be too mad!

Still I think the RvP criticism is a bit OTT because he was asked to play on wide right which he just hasnt got the pace for. He was bad but i think a lot was down to the the system we played
 
Had he scored yesterday, this thread would have grown by at least 5 pages. It's really sad the odd effect this transfer has had on so many of our own fans.

Not really. I have never once bumped this thread, nor have I slated Welbeck. It's funny, he's on a drought for Arsenal but the thread has grown at a very moderate pace, compare that to when he scores and it says it all. The people who need to bump the thread at any given opportunity when he has a good game, are extremely tedious. Those same posters go missing when he plays poor.

To say I'm the other extreme is just petty and without any foundations.
 
He was anonymous against a poor Manchester United side and some are still praising him? Anyway, van Gaal 1-0 Welbeck.
