He scores two international goals and someone flippantly commends his performance in his thread and it works you up into a little frendzy where you have to disagree to the point you analyse both goals in order to explain why it's stupid that he said "two great goals".

I mean, seriously, he made a 7 word post and you give it that reaction?

Exactly, there just has to be some sort of bias associated with most comments in this thread. Either trying to downplay his performance to defend the transfer or overrate everything to prove what a mistake it was. Childish.

Looked really good again today, good link up and finishing and looking like he is relishing the pressure of being England's no.9. An absolute snip for the Arse at under 20 million squid, still hurts to see him flourishing in a gooner shirt. Fair play to the lad though, grasping his opportunities at club & ininternational level with real maturity and class.

Huh?! :wenger:

To think our record signing used to be Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for £15m. Now average joes like Welbeck are going for similar amounts and that's been seen as a 'snip'. Words escape me.

I wish words would stop escaping you.

This thread is great.
Posters who adore him, brand his every game excellent, the new Henry, he's flourishing in Arsenal shirt, crying we let him go.

Vs
People who bash him every time he doesnt score a goal or has a bad game.

Truth is somewhere in between I guess. :D

You mean fifteen years ago?

Exactly, 14 years ago we signed him for a then record fee, a striker who had scored 35 goals for Atletico just the previous season. Compare and contrast.

Welbeck cost Arsenal £16m.... LOL!

My initial post was very small. Frenzy? Erm okey dokey.

I do miss it when Man Utd Welbeck scores for England. Everyone always used to discredit him and he constantly proved them wrong on the international stage and it just felt great. Now Arsenal fans get to feel that same feeling.

I guess we'll just have to wait for Wilson to become the saviour of England :)

I'm sure no one's calling him 'the new Henry', or saying that he's been 'brilliant' for Arsenal so far. Any discontent is largely due to how more fluid we looked with him in the attack during pre-season, and the lack of pace in our senior forwards at present in comparison.

The truth is very much somewhere in between.

Hard to see how anyone can justify Welbeck for 16mn as a snip, think it's pretty much the right price for him.

Two very different goals for Danny tonight, but a goals a goal. He doesn't score enough of the scrappy goals. Nice to see him getting into the right position to put it away.

Thought the second one was super, and sums up Danny's type of play. Well worked from him and Sterling in a tight area (which is needed against teams with 11 men behind the ball), which was topped off by a nice, composed finish.

And this summer a striker who scored 30+ goals for Atletico went for £32m. Double what Welbeck went for.
Also I'm wearing a new jumper today and I'm absolutely devastated a thread has been pulled. Ruined it for me.

I know, that was pointless aswell.

Arsenal signed an internationally proven striker for £16m last summer. That is a bargain. Comparing it to a transfer that happened 14 years ago is ridiculous.

Seeing as you just bought the 2014 version of exactly what you described there, you must understand inflation given he was twice the price?

Hater? You deciphered from my post that I 'hate' him? I hate the way some people carry on when it comes him but have nothing against the player whatsoever.

I think you're unbelievably blinkered if you think the first goal was great. I mean seriously. He was poor in the first half but dramatically improved and had a very good second half. The second goal was good composure but the first was scrappy and appeared up to go in, in slow motion. I didn't know it was obligatory to bump this thread every time he scores. He has been relatively poor for Arsenal recently and it has been relatively quiet. Strange.

We are about to play Arsenal away and their striker is Danny Welbeck, that makes me happy.

Knowing English mentality/Hodgson/England NT once Sturridge returns Welbeck will be shifted wide or on the bench because Sturridge is "bigger name" lately even though Sturridge is regulary crap for England.

Sturridge has a decent enough record for England, to be fair. Shunting Welbeck out wide would be stupid considering how ineffective he is out there. He has been very good as a number 9 for England, but yeah, nothing would surprise with their set up. If Sturridge kicks on where he left off for Liverpool, he will most likely take the number 9 spot.

That will happen but mostly because Sturridge is the better 9

Well he is not for England, in fact, Welbeck has proved to be better player than him in England's shirt however you look at it.

Did amuse me the way Andy and Clive were harping on about his recent goalscoring exploits for club and country. Erm, 1 goal in 7 games for Arsenal.

Danny Welbeck 31 caps 13 goals. Daniel Sturridge 16 caps 5 goals. There really isn't much between them at all. Think you're slightly exaggerating by proclaiming that Welbeck has been much better. I do agree that Welbeck would be unfortunate to get shunted out wide / dropped as he has played well as England's number 9.

Unfortunately this is the kind of nonsense that you have to come to expect since he left for Arsenal. When he was here, he was pretty derided in the media, now he's apparently brilliant. His international scoring record is pretty good, though.

I think in a good portion of those games he would have been played on the left of a front 3, but I agree between him and Sturridge, for England, there's not much in it. Does Roy stick with the Roo - Welbz partnership though?

Sturridge scored just one goal that was important for England(vs Italy), other were eight goal in a game against San Marino, fourth(penalty) goal against Montenegro in 4-1 victory, and two goals in friendly games. Welbeck already scored decent amount of important goals for England even though he was shifted wide for Sturridge or Rooney quite often.

Also, Welbeck's goal per game ratio is much better than Sturridge's for England, those stats don't tell the whole picture because Welbeck didn't play double more minutes than Sturridge as those number of apps suggest (I think the difference isn't bigger than 250-350 minutes between the two in total) beecause he was quite often subbed on unlike Sturridge who was mainly starter when fit so that's why he has lot of apps that were just few minutes cameo.

It's clear there isn't much between them. Saying Welbeck is much better is a clear exaggeration.

You just never know with Hodgson. Rooney and Welbeck seem to be working at the moment but Sturridge will be hard to overlook if gets back to his prolific ways for Liverpool. I would imagine that either Welbeck or Sturridge will be played out wide but I have no idea which one. Hodgson seems to like Welbeck and to be fair, he's performed well for the NT as a number 9, so it would be unfair to play him out wide.
