Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

How was he today?
Classic Welbeck. Does a lot of good work for the team and got an assist. But also should have done better with the one decent chance he had and shot across goal instead of to the near post.

8 games so far all as a starter 2 goals, 2 assist as a #9. Hasn't scored in 5 games in a row in all competitions. Had a very good chance to score one today, fluffed it.

So far it's typical Welbeck.

He's been fine. Arsenal will look for a better centre forward as soon as possible though, he'll end up on the bench just like at United.

Thought he did well. I wish we had him here.

Yeah he did well and he would be an asset still here but that's because we are competing at the same level as Arsenal. If both clubs want to improve (ie challenge Chelsea for the title) they'll most likely have to do better than Welbeck up front as @KiD MoYeS has pointed out.

Sure. We're quite light at CB so how about Smalling?

I rate Smalling actually...and so does Wenger.

so unlike some of our lot who went berserk...I think he has a future here.

seriously on Welbeck...he will improve playing regularly and I wont be surprised if we tried to get him back in a couple of years.

Personally I am happy for the lad.

Above United?

That only makes sense if Arsenal are in a rebuilding phase, in the summer you guys were talking of fantasy land title challenges. Louis van Gaal expects to be in the race for top four this season but next he will be with Mourinho.

Here's hoping. For Arsenal, finishing above United isn't a great achievement anymore (maybe it was under Fergie) but whilst we are rebuilding it's nothing to write home about. In the other thread someone scoffed the idea they were having a terrible season because they had 1 point more than us. By definition we're having a shit season so far, so 1 point isn't something to crow about.

Giroud scores goals, so he'll start. Danny may well find himself shunted out wide again.
He will be better there with this Arsenal side I think. He's not a goalscorer, his attributes will be utilized better on the wing.

Definitely. Although if Arsenal and Wenger ever actually regain any ambition and want to win trophies they will have to upgrade Welbeck.

Why? If the team plays better because of him and others score then so what?

Chelsea's top scorer in their first 2 league wins was Lampard. 2nd was Gudjohnson and Drogba on 12.

Do they play better because of him? No, it's been the same old Arsenal.

They certainly aren't playing better because of him. He has been subbed off 3 times in the past 4 games and hasn't looked particularly good at all.

He isn't showing anything so far to justify some of the ridiculous hype levels in this thread.

@KiD MoYeS said when Arsenal 'gain some ambition again' - that isn't right now, and my point was that his goal count alone shouldn't be something that necessarily needs upgrading to challenge for titles etc.

I'd choose Sanchez, Walcott and the Ox ahead of Danny out wide any day of the week, if I were an Arsenal fan. He'll just be competing for the strikers spot imo.

Hows that 30 goals in one season working out?

You are in the wrong thread, as far as I can remember everyone was saying that about Falcao, and his thread is in Manchester United forum.

I thought the narrative with Welbeck at United was that he was never able to get a run of games at #9-and once he did so at Arsenal he would show his goal scoring ability?

Now people are saying he should be on the wing? Don't understand.

it would fairer to judge him after a season.

My question is in response to posts about Welbeck's place in the first XI when Giroud returns. That someone suggests he would be on the wing when that happens IMO goes against the rationale for bringing him in.

To be fair Arsenal have been shite all season. Not creating much for him

His record for Arsenal is 12 games, 5 goals and 2 assists.

That's close to a goal every 2 games. If he keeps that up for the season he will break 20 goals for the first time in his career.

This is the first time in his career he's getting a run as a first team regular in a CL side. I don't think there is any past barometer to judge him on.

Until Giroud is back he will be their starting striker.

When did Welbz score 5? Unless you're counting CL which is totally unfair as RVP and Falcao aren't playing in it
SHHH its all Asnl fans have anymore over us

But 3 of those goals game in one game right? i know they all count but when you think about it 2 goals in 11 games is pretty bad given how he plays up top for them

It's not unfair as most top teams play in the CL. You just need to factor the appearances in as well so it does not give a misleading impression of his goals per game.

But he has not scored 2 goals in 11 games. His record is 5 goals in 12 games. Why take them out of the equation? They still count.

Right-and what happens when Giroud comes back?

Largely depends on Welbeck's form and the number of competitions they are in. If they are in the CL, FA Cup and Champions League both are going to be playing week in week out. I just checked and Giroud is back in training now and may play against United.

The problem is that he's not a winger either. He's useful there because he's a hard worker and has some ability, but unless he's been playing as more of an inside forward perhaps, he's going to struggle to be much more than a squad player on the wing because he lacks a lot of the attributes a top winger should have.

Dont get me wrong they all do, but remember when Berba scored 5 goals against Blackburn? He finished with 20 goals that season in the league, which finished joint top scorer with Tevez. Take those 5 out and he would have been a lot lower in the charts. They all count but i would have rather had Tevez in our team that season. Stats have this nasty habit of distorting the facts which this hows - word it "2 in 11" and its pretty bad but "5 in 12" makes it seem like hes really hit top form for them when thats not been the case.

Also when you consider hes playing up top in a settled team that create lots of chances a game but he doesnt take them you cant fall back on "5 in 12". The last 3 games i've seen of him hes a handful up top but rarely threatened

Arsenal have enough players to create chances. What they need is a prolific number 9 and Welbeck isn't that player. I would most definitely have Giroud up top when he returns. He may not be a better player than Welbeck necessarily, but he's definitely a better goal scoring number 9.

If / when Ozil, Giroud, Ox, Walcott, Cazorla, Sanchez and Welbeck are all fit, Welbeck will definitely struggle to be a starter.
