Dani Alves

As i said in a previous post, its been rumoured that Rafa ruled himself out of many games under Fergie & now LvG - even though the medical staff cleared him to train & then play on matchday.

TBH I find that hard to believe from a player who plays on with a broken cheek bone, and shows as much commitment to play as he does tbh. I could be wrong, but since this is a rumour I would say its likely fabricated. LVG also being notoriously cautious when it comes to playing recovering players and the fact he was turning out regularly for the U21s.

As for Alves, would be a no brainer, WTF would we not sign a player for free who is clearly an upgrade on Valencia

This washed up player played 44 games for a treble chasing Barcelona this season. What a terrible washed up player.

Some people just talk nonsense for the sake of talking without looking at what's actually happening. If you are really convinced that he is a useless addition than name me a better RB that is available at the moment.

Alves is the best around that's available alright & he could play on at this level for atleast 3 more years - Cafu & Zanetti did & were still world-class up until they retired past 35 years old.

If we get Alves (and he's a free agent), then i dont think that should it at RB though. Get Darmian in also & he looks to be considering a move away from Torino - he'd be mental not to anyway:

Does anybody else think this will end with Alves signing a massive one or two year extension with barca?
They can't buy a new right back in the summer and surely if Alves wanted to leave he would have signed a pre contract in jan.

Coleman is already in his mid 20's so I doubt there's much point waiting for him to keep developing massively. Agree with your general point though, if there aren't good long term alternatives then why not go for a quality short term fix for now?
I just checked, he's 26! I thought he was very early 20s.

Tbh Kag, i cant remember where i heard it. Could have been Andy Goldstein on Talksport - that's what rings a bell mate..

You may not like Rafael, but it seems unfair to level these kind of accusations at a player who has previously given the impression he'd run through walls to put on the United shirt. His commitment has never been in doubt and this rumour is the first I've heard to the contrary.

It is rumored that he literally did that, in order to miss games.

I would not be surprised at all if he eventually works out a contract with Barcelona. However i also would not be surprised at all if he leaves because i think Adriano is a very good player. Always rated him since his Sevilla days.

If he is not our first choice and our interest have cooled on Clyne, then who the feck are we going for?

Hope it's Carvajal

Said for a while I'd like us to pick him up, really is the best option available at RB in that he's free and better than most who are available for a fee

A bit wary that his recent great form is down to him playing for a new contract. A past it Dani Alves is still better than Valencia, but ideally we should be aiming higher for that.

Jesus man - its only a football forum, where folk express opinions & info they've heard or read. Who gives a toss if you or i havent heard the same rumours or Chinese Whispers, as others have. No need to get all Detective Columbo about it though :D

You have a love-in with Rafa - i dont anymore. Its no big deal. We just have different opinions!

I loved the old Rafa, when he made the Prem team of the year. He was excellent & we looked set for years to come.

I dont like this new version we've seen the past couple of seasons though - even more hot-headed & reckless, which i deem to be an unreliable player.

I found some stats on Rafa's time here. Its not to back up any of my opinions, just thought its interesting to see:

2008/09 Season: 27 Appearances / 1 Goal / 6 Yellow Cards
2009/10 Season: 16 Appearances / 1 Goal / 4 Yellow Cards / 1 Red Card
2010/11 Season: 28 Appearances / 0 Goals / 3 Yellow Cards / 1 Red Card
2011/12 Season: 18 Appearances / 0 Goals / 5 Yellow Cards
2012/13 Season: 40 Appearances / 3 Goals / 8 Yellow Cards / 1 Red Card
2013/14 Season: 29 Appearances / 0 Goals / 7 Yellow Cards
2014/15 Season: 11 Appearances / 0 Goals / 2 Yellow Cards

No he's not - they're both the same height:

Do you actually know what "Small Man Syndrome" is - which was my point?

Here's a few definition's for you: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=rafael+da+silva&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=6YtjVZjuL4qfsgHXo4HQCA#q=small man syndrome

Its not because Rafa is short - its his mentality of being short. Its him tryin to prove how tough he is for the fans & the tv, and not giving a shit about the team - makin rash tackles & "gettin stuck in" when the situation doesnt require him to, giving away free's around / inside the box & gettin booked / sent off because of it.

He just constantly lets the team down to try to make folk think he's a "big man" ala John Terry, who is actually one tough bastard (injured & out for a month - but back in a week on painkilling injections & round the clock treatment for the next match), as much as i hate to admit it.

Nev was short & had a bitta Small Man Syndrome about him too, but he was hard & not a pussy like Rafa; who's been said to have ruled himself out of games because he didnt feel right (Fergie era) - even though the medical staff passed him fit on all those occasions.

He's been gettin paid shitloads for f*ck all - sittin on his arse "injured" for years. I'll be delighted to see the back of him & so will the club too i think. Sure we only wanted his twin brother Fabio in the first place - the much better player of the two, but the deal was take both or none. Bum deal we got in hindsight..

What a load of absolute shit.

What about Keano, did he have 'short man syndrome' at 5'11? Because if he was 5'8 he'd suddenly have it.

Or what about Costa? If he had the exact same personality and was Aguero's height he'd suddenly have 'short man syndrome' too.

If Suarez was a few inches shorter he'd have it as well.

Some people are feisty, some people are hard, some people are tall, some people are short.

It's like saying a woman is less intelligent because she's got blonde hair - outdated, offensive, bullshit.

I've accepted that he is leaving and no longer care. I've removed all kind of sentimentality in my thinking over the past few years and any player that isn't physically fit enough to start week in, week out should be given the boot.

Rafael was never in the team of the season and he's been no more reckless this season or last then he was prior to that, in my opinion. His recklessness has always been overstated and generally mythical. The fact he averages around 4 yellow cards a season is testament to that. Valencia, for example, gives away more needless fouls than any other player in the squad right now, but he is never accused of recklessness or hot-headedness. Rafael is outwardly aggressive, but that's the nature of his play style.

Rafael's fitness has been his biggest issue. I also think that he gives the ball away too much for Van Gaal's liking, but that's only a personal theory. He regularly has some of the worst pass completion rates amongst the first team. Sometimes as low as 75%, which is a no-no under the new man.

So The Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail all saying we're interested in Alves. If Howedes is the back up option, I sure as hell hope we get Alves.

The transfer seems likely. Judging by that interview, it doesn't sound like he'll be staying at Barcelona and he already said PSG is not an option. Can't see him going anywhere else if he leaves.

Problem with him right now is he isn't consistent. He can raise his game for some games and runs but doesn't mantain throughout most games.

We need a new RB as a priority.
Alves is better than Clyne or Coleman

Unless we secretly in for Carvajal I have no problem with bringing Alves to Old Trafford.

And why do we keep arguing about Rafael? Whatever our personal opinions on the player LVG has preferred playing Valencia over him so we it's pretty safe to assume he won't be here when the window closes

I'd love him here, yes it would be a quick fix but he would do well for a couple of seasons and in the meantime we could eye up a younger player.

We need a new right back. Juve aren't doing too badly with their quick fix 'past it' left back. I'd happily take Alves here. He's better than anyone else we can realistically bring in at the moment. We don't always have to buy young talent.

It seems Howedes is injured & is nailed on to miss the start of the season too Scorpy: http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/87/g...oubtful-for-start-of-next-bundesliga-campaign

Apparantly he's got "Tall Man Syndrome" aswell.. :(

True... Mind you did the juve right back sign a new deal or is he available on a free as well?

If Pep keeps on playing Lahm in midfield is bayern a potential option?

That's a great shout actually, I didn't think of Bayern as an option for Alves. Bayern could do with an upgrade on Rafinha and Pep knows Alves better than anybody. It makes perfect sense.

Easy there little fella.

Still looks like he's got the legs and he's a tough little fecker, no brainer for free.

Also, Dresses like a T*#t, which is a bonus.

Ah, right, that.

I doubt I'm short enough to qualify for 'short man syndrome' to be honest.

Plenty of mates I've had over the years would qualify though, and I'd love to see the outcome of you leveling it at any of them...which of course you would do, cause you're clearly a fecking huge, double hard bastard. Aren't you, big man?

Keane definitely had it. He kept getting rejected by English teams because he wasn't "big enough"

Way passed his best, should be looking at other options before him. He doesnt have the immense physical prowess he used to, which I think would mean he'd be a liability at times in the high tempo of the EPL. That said I won't be gutted if we sign him, still a class player who'd create loads of chances.

@JUPITER totally agree with you btw, extremely silly how people will assume any feisty short bloke is feisty BECAUSE they're short.

A lot of you who make this height argument don't really understand football.

This is why the England national team is terrible, we go for tall strong etc first then technique second.

Look at the height of Maradona Pelé and Messi all within same height range, look at Cafu, Roberto Carlos... height doesn't generally matter for these areas.

If you're picking 2 CBs and a GK fair enough.

Also Alves I can't see at Manchester United, he's probably the best RB in the world based on this season, his best in a Barca shirt.

No we don't

No we don't

England goes for athletes first, look at Walcott he's an athlete, look at Chris Smalling, athlete, Cahill, Henderson, all athletes with fairly limited technical ability.

None of those are natural footballers, compare that with a top player like Pirlo he's not an athlete yet put him against Henderson, do so with Marchisio, or Xavi, or Iniesta.

Technical ability first, people who argue about the height of a player is irrelevant.

Cahill is a class defender. Walcott and Smalling aren't starters. Roberto Carlos and Cafu obviously would have been if they were English. Neville is 5'8" and started their for England for years.
