Barclay Refuses To Acknowledge De Gea Mistake
OCTOBER 17, 2011 149 COMMENTS
When Manchester United signed 20-year-old goalkeeper David de Gea for £20m you could more or less predict what was going to happen. His first mistake would be magnified, he’d get ripped apart in the press and would be under the spotlight from then on.

So, the script had been written and de Gea complied, letting in two soft goals against City at the Community Shield at Wembley. The team came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 but a lot was made of his mistakes.

On the opening day of the season, de Gea let in a shot he should have saved against West Brom and the papers went to town on him.

Whilst obviously not the finished article, our young goalie has started to win the press over now (The TelegraphDe Gea passes Anfield test, The GuardianDavid de Gea shrugs off his dodgy mantle to rise above the occasion) following fantastic saves in our games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Even Patrick Barclay from The Times, who had probably been the most damning of all, came round to seeing what a top talent we have between the sticks.

Whilst it’s nice to see some of de Gea’s fiercest critics come round to him, it’s cringeworthy that Barclay can’t just acknowledge that he got it wrong. To write de Gea off after one league game was a ridiculous thing to do but everyone can make dodgy calls at times.

The fact that he had been the first choice keeper at one of the best teams in Spain for two years previously, winning the Europa League and Super Cup as their number one as a teenager, should have been a big clue that we weren’t wasting our money. Still, nobody is perfect, even if Barclay’s criticism was excessive and too hasty.

“The goalie is like a jelly,” he said.

“He isn’t physically capable.”

“He’s Heurelho Gomes without the shot-stopping. I can’t see what he’s got. That’s what he is.”

“I have to say, I’m looking forward to Man United Stoke, when is it?”

“How on earth could Ferguson and all his millions of goalkeeping [scouts]… is Tony Coton still there? Whoever. He’s had Alan Hodgkinson over the years. How on earth they could have watched this boy, week in week out, and then signed him for the first team. I just don’t know.”

Clearly Barclay forgot all about this episode otherwise he wouldn’t have been so foolish as to claim that he had never questioned de Gea’s ability, just his form. I’m not sure whether just two games can count as “form” but in claiming he had no idea why United had signed him, after watching him regularly, Barclay is clearly criticising the lad’s ability.

We’ve seen the U-turn on his opinion, it’s just a shame that a journalist who is generally regarded fairly highly isn’t big enough just to admit he got it wrong.

We might as well keep our new GK coach for De Gea's sake, unless for whatever reason he's vehemently loyal to Moyes and decides to follow him out.

Round, Lumsden and I'm afraid to say Phil Neville should indefinitely follow him out.

I'd rather it was more sudden.

Imagine if the club now issued a statement saying he has their full support! I don't know what I would do ...
I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, seeing as how this disaster of a season has gone, I wouldn't bet against that happening

Only reliable reporter who hasn't reported yet is Andy Mitten. He's likely got the best scoop from OT aside from may be Mark Ogden. If Rio wasn't angling for a new contract he would likely have said something already.

Absolutely no chance of getting Simeone or Klopp. Getting Giggs when he's still working towards his UEFA coaching badges is stupid, and Queiroz would be better off as a coach not a manager. Leaves us with Van Gaal

TalkSport proudly lauding their source. Presumably the same source that said the club were willing to fork out tens of millions for a player Moyes had picked for the upcoming transfer window.

What a joke.

I genuinely dislike this guy. When I used to watch Sunday Supplement I wouldn't bother if he was on, he's like the Jamie Redknapp of journalism

Karma mate, the talentless turd hung round Goodison like a bad smell for 5 or 6 years too long.

A generation grew up shitting themselves about playing the SKY4 teams it is a MASSIVE myth the scale of his contribution to EFC - he should never have got the utd job.

Wow, I always got the impression that everton fans liked him and thought well of him. Although im not sure if your opinion is shared by the majority. If it is, then it really shows how much shit sky sports and the English media spout.

Paddy Barclay is an educated man who tries to undermine that fact every time he opens his gob.

I remember a few years ago starting the bandwagon for Moyes during one of the vacancies at Chelsea or Spurs - simply couldn't take him seriously from that moment. He's one of the main culprits in the whole Moyes myth.

The silence from the board is worrying. We need a 'we are behind the manager an will fully back him' kind of quote. That usually translates to 'get the feck out'.

People here feel sorry for Moyes but don't remember that he will have 5 years severance.

Yes he didn't hire himself for a job above his standards but he did decide to dismantle a championship winning backrom.

He bought this on himself sad to say

Feels like wait for the Mata deal to be concluded all over again, just sitting, refreshing each page hoping nothing goes wrong.
And to all those scumbags who lorded it over us this season.. REVENGE

First time in days I am away from the caf for a few hours and this news breaks!

It wouldn't take 5 minutes for the club to knock up a statement saying that DM isn't being dismissed.

Mate look at what happens at OT re Moyes. While a manager wears the tie it's hard to come out publicly and slate him but since he ditched his EFC tie the reality is being revealed. Plus Martinez has opened many previously closed eyes.

Too many journalists being too certain for this to be false.

I wouldn't be too sure that's the case. As been discussed, its possible there might be clauses in his contract which allow us to prematurely terminate his contract if he fails with certain targets.

Indeed. If they wanted to deny it, they could have done it by now, easily. Several papers and other media outlets contacted the club.

I just hope it's really announced tonight. Or tomorrow morning at the latest.

Yep, no coincidence if he was to be fired it would be as soon as we were mathematically out of the Champions League next season.

Come on Jurgen Klopp
Do better than the flop!
We'll go wild, wild, wild!
