They'll have an almost one in two goal scorer. PL proven. Good signing unfortunately.

He would of suited us based on the way we kept crossing.
Interesting to see how he works out for them then, cause they crossed the least out of all 20 teams last season.

He's not all that for me. Up until his purple patch at the end of last season he'd been awful for about a season and a half.

Wut ? Lazily ? Did you follow Drogba's career for Guingamp ? Or did you look up bulk numbers on stat sites as a form of justification for the opinion ? If you followed his progress at Guingamp, it was crystal clear that Drogba progressed significantly each season leading up to the transfer to Marseille, hence the well founded consistency argument once he signed for Marseille and later Chelsea. Distinctly remember him elevating his consistency in front of goal with each season gone by, as opposed to Benteke who has regressed a lot since his breakout first season at Aston Villa where he scored something like 20 odd goals.

As for the latter part, Benteke just doesn't have the ability of Drogba to elevate himself to that level. It's really simplistic to suggest that he can replicate what Didier did for Chelsea just because his numbers are comparable at a similar age. Infact, if you scroll up the thread, there's statistical evidence to counter this very argument. Why are you considering his goal figures in a vacuum, and projecting him to be something he won't be ? This just seems eerily similar to the Dembele love-in going off his performances for Fulham.

Yep, Drogba had like 60 odd assists over his Chelsea career, yet certain people in this thread seem to remember him exclusively as some sort of technically redundant, route 1 battering ram that plowed through defenses and didn't contribute much else.
From a goal scoring standpoint its pretty obvious that benteke can more than match Drogba moving forward. He scores goals and when he's on form and his team gives him decent service he's utterly destructive in front of goal. Apart from Drogba's 09/10 season, there's nothing he did in front of goal that Benteke hasn't already done. Let's not act like drogba consistently put up those ridiculous numbers of that season.

He was a battering ram with incredible strength and very good ball striking. What he had was a very good football brain, not some technical gifts that the likes of benteke don't have, he just used to make the 'right play' most of the time. No one says he didn't contribute much else, but painting him as some sort of technical masterpiece is nothing short of ridiculous.

Not sure how he fits in their way of play, till now he was fed with crosses. In that regard wonder did we cross more in one game vs Fulham then them in whole last season.

Hope they get the Benteke who scored 2 goals in the first 23 matches of the season rather than the one who scored 11 in the last 15 matches :D

Ok.

He's going to be a great signing for Liverpool, annoyingly good infact. They're slowly putting together an impressive front line again. Firmino, Coutiniho, Sturridge, Benteke. If that clicks, it could be fantastic.

Thank feck their midfield and defence is crap.

No mention of this on the SKY TV hourly bulletin so maybe not as cut and dried as the rumours appear.

Hehe I saw one headline of 'Southampton swoop for Man United target' the other day regarding Classie...ridiculous.

If we wanted Clyne, Ings or Benteke we'd have had them.

That's true... It's the same with Dutch players actually. Their agents must think "lets leak to the press than Van Gaal is interested and everyone will see the Dutch link and assume it's correct. Last year it was Sneijder (again), De Jong, De Vrij, Indi & Janmaat and this year Clasie, Cillessen & Van der Weil. Considering the Dutch squad on a whole is pretty crap I don't understand why the media would accept that we want their entire squad.

I'd prefer Berahino as a back up bench striker. Kane or Lacazette if we're being serious.

He'll be a good signing for Liverpool, I don't think he'd have been a good signing for us.
I think the opposite the guy feeds of being a target man by himself on the end of crosses. Liverpool cross the ball the least in the league.

£32.5m is too much for a back up striker, even though I really like him. Might as well just keep Chicharito. He'd be a good signing for Liverpool though.

I think he's an even worse signing for Liverpool than he would have been for us. What's the point of having Firminho, Lallana and Coutinho with all of their intricate passing and movement if you've got a carthorse like Benteke slowing everything down? Makes even less sense given that they don't really cross the ball into the box.

Good signing for them he will score more goals than any of our strikers next season unless we bring in someone good that's for sure

A little bit pricy but the market is that way out now.

Expensive but will probably be good for Liverpool. It's not easy convincing the A-list targets to come when you're out of the CL and that has been the case so often in recent years that they've slipped into oblivion for a lot of people. Trouble is the B-list candidates aren't necessarily cheaper.

It will be interesting to see how he fits into their system, but he's a strong, quick fecker who is difficult to handle. They could use a bit of bite on the team. Last years team was probably the meekest Liverpool I've seen, especially in the Anfield game against United. No wonder Gerrard went nuts. Players like Benteke and Milner will probably make them tougher to play against.

Decent, but not consistent enough for a top club. Decent Sturridge cover for Liverpool though.

This tweet lays bare how much they're counting on these deals going right.

It's even less that that considering £5m of Sterling's fee was in addons. They've been given £44m up front, £8.8m of which made it's way down to Loftus Road. If they end up paying £32.5m for Benteke, they'll only have £2.2m left as change.

Shame, I would've liked him here. 24/25, ridiculously strong, quick and a consistent goalscorer, not just a one season wonder.

What other striker can we realistically get now?

I think all our eggs are in the Cavani basket.

I'd love it if we could actually secure an unrealistic target (Lewandowski, Muller, Griezmann, Benzema) but its far too unlikely.
