Don't see the point of comparing him to Drogba other than both of them being big units.

Drogba's main assets was his value to overall play, with goals second. He should be compared with the likes of Kluivert or even Heskey (though obviously superior to both).

Sorry, did you just describe Drogba as obviously superior to Patrick Kluivert and place Kluivert on a par with Emile Heskey?

For a period in around 98 - 01 whilst at Barca Patrick Kluivert was one of the top 3 strikers in the world. To describe Drogba as "obviously superior" is farcical.

Signing Benteke for £32m, using almost all the money from the sale of Sterling, with Balotelli, Lambert and Borini still at the club wouldn't sit well with the fans though surely.

You already spent £35m on another similar player that didn't turn out to be a success for you. You need a hard working striker to suit your playing style, Benteke doesn't fit in that.

Yep, I wanted us to sign Bacca.

Based on his goal record in the PL and his age, we could do a lot worse, if fact we did last season paying big wages for the privilege.

However, if he does sign for Liverpool, he is Shite and we were never interested in the first place.

I am a bit mixed on him, it's odd but I am not 100% sure I want Liverpool to sign him, but I don't really want to see United get him either!

We definitely need a quality striker, having said that we really need to offload a couple too.

The last I heard was before the Sterling sale, and we were interested but didn't want to pay the release clause value and were looking at an alternative way. But it's gone quiet now (even the RAWK thread on the player has been closed).

You may be right - as I suggested we may have waited and missed out. Unless we are looking at selling a couple of our unwanted strikers first, or maybe have looked at other targets.

We still have:
Sturridge, Ings, Origi, Lambert who can play CF, second strlker or both

Ibe, Markovic, Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino who can play both wide or SS

Still have Borini and Balotelli on the books too

I think most United fans have mixed feelings on us signing Benteke & also that Pool will get him too; because he could turn out to be a really top-class player soon enough & just needed motivation in playin for a big club like United & Pool. It's just the fee that's wrecking heads - he's not worth that, but neither is Kane & he had a brilliant last season.

You need to get rid of Balotelli & Borini - 2 waste of space players for a club like yours. Lambert / Balotelli or Borini, could all be used as a makeshift in a deal for Benteke, but maybe Lambert doesnt want to leave Pool & the other 2 have massive delusions of grandeur & want a much bigger club to move to?!

From what i gather about Lambert - he's a real nice fella & is probably brilliant in the dressing & never complains about not playin etc either. That's a great thing to have in a team, but its about the contribution he makes on the field more importantly & Ricky's not contributing as much as Pool folk maybe thought he would.

One things for sure - you're massively overstocked with forwards & many of them are not gonna bring you's on man - the 3 aforementioned for example..

He's a decent player but I've not seen anything to suggest he is worth in excess of £25M.

On a positive he is big, 6ft 3 inch, strong and quick so in that respect he has the physical attributes to be a success in the PL coupled with a decent scoring record.

If Villa are demanding £32m for him then I would rather bid another 15-20m for Kane.

And we'd get laughed at by Levy & told never to contact Spurs again..

Levy would laugh at £50m? I imagine thats probably somewhere around what he'd be after.
Levy is absolutely mad. He'd probably ask for £800m while lying on the beach laughing like he laughed at a £80m bid from Real Madrid for Bale according to @GlastonSpur

This might have been true when he came to Chelsea but he definitely became a more creative player over his first stint there.

Stats seem to agree with my memory, as he is 4th all time in Prem Assists among strikers with only Rooney, Henry and RVP ahead of him. Drogba was no Bergkamp or Ibra as a creative 9, but he wasn't Chicharito or Trezeguet either.
That post of mine was about how technical he was rather than how creative he was. Anyways drogba wasn't all that creative, he just had a great football brain and would make the right decision in the final 3rd hence he'd pick up assists.

£15-20m on top of £32m is no laughing matter but I guess Levy would reject whatever bid from us.

Sorry Nate, i read your post wrong man & thought you meant an opening bid of £15-20m. I've kinda posted an apology just above (and its quoted below). Should have done it directly to you in hindsight, but i gathered you'd see it. Anyway, sorry mate :):

I read into what Nate Dogg said, that we should bid £15-20m for Kane. He meant £32m + £15-20m. My bad..

£15-20m on top of £32m is serious dough & no way should we pay that, but if we want him - that's probably what it'll take unfortunately.

There must be cheaper & better alternatives than Kane though - not that money is the real issue of course (we're minted); its just gettin screwed by Levy that does most of head-wrecking more than anything. I really hate that prick

I don't think Rodgers used Balotelli or Lambert that well either. Playing a lone striker doesn't suit them.

Yeah Ricky comes across as a great bloke, feel a little sorry for him to be honest as I rated him at Southampton where he scored plenty of goals, and being a Liverpool fan and all.

Borini hasn't had many chances but clearly the manager doesn't want him.

I haven't seen any real links for moves regarding any of them yet.

Heskey was obviously not as good as Kluivert either.

Kluivert was never ever one of the top 3 strikers in the world. He was however a very good foil for Rivaldo and Figo.

During those years, you had Shevchenko, Batistuta, Vieri, Raul, Ronaldo and Shearer who were all better.

He was never even the best dutch striker.

Overpriced but good player. They've obviously paid £5m-£10m more than he's worth but we've been guilty of that too recently. The most important part is they've got a quality striker in when there's not many available out there. Again, a good bit of business by Pool after the signing of Firmino, Clyne and Gomez.

Think Benteke will do well for the scouse.Turning into a decent window for them.Firmino,Coutinho and Benteke is the makings of a good attack especially if sturridge can get fit.Milner and Clyne are also improvements over their current options.Nowhere near enough for 4th though.

Yes praise the scousers for getting him before we went for him. Dodged a real bullet with this one :D

Unfortunately I think he's going to do well for them. Though I said that about Lovren and Lallana so who knows.

I think he'll do well there too. I don't think he'd have suited us or the style of play we are looking at. Good signing for Liverpool...but if I had the choice of Rooney or Benteke starting up top...I know who I would be choosing.

Why is it that the majority of transfers that the two clubs make seem to be pitted as a "United vs Liverpool battle" for the player?

Clyne, Ings & seemingly Benteke so far have all been "Liverpool beat United", whilst Depay was "United beat Liverpool".

I can only assume it's agents feeding stories to the media to scare the other club into paying the price, given the rivalry between the two clubs?

Liverpool close to £32.5m Benteke deal, reports @TonyBarretTimes

Pretty reliable source.
Cheers. Good buy for you lot. Think he will do much better than the dross and the perma crock you have in your striker department. Still feel the fee is on the higher side, but you have at least spent it in an area which you guys desperately need to improve.

Hehe I saw one headline of 'Southampton swoop for Man United target' the other day regarding Classie...ridiculous.

If we wanted Clyne, Ings or Benteke we'd have had them.

They'll have an almost one in two goal scorer. PL proven. Good signing unfortunately.

He would of suited us based on the way we kept crossing.

Benteke is not Woody's type....I'm sure he has his eyes on someone like Cavani.
