Modric is a much more alround midfielder than Fabregas. Di Maria is hard working. The other two are 10s but Mourinho is looking for a CM. Özil was being covered by Khedira and Alonso, really not similar at all. Mourinho already has his Özils in Hazard and Oscar, he can't afford more silky players for his system to work.

Obviously he does one or two, otherwise noone would create a goal, but his preferences are very obviously players with focus on defensive attributes and some quick one trick ponies like Schürrle who can defend.

Very true. I still think he would like to have fabregas though, especially with lampard going.
His best position would be as a number 10 so theoretically it makes sense for us to not be interested. However, that only holds true if we're actually signing a top class central midfielder, otherwise Fabregas is a total no brainer due to him being better than all of our current options by quite some distance. I suppose we should wait and see who our targets are before going crazy.

True, his later days at Arsenal he played further forward but he also played excellently in a deeper role.
Still a world class player IMO. I doubt we'll sign a better player than him this summer.
He is the same player and that is the problem, he did not adapt. He was too direct a player for them, cant play in tight spaces as well as their other midfielders and didn't suit their style at all. Nobody doubts his quality, its just that he couldnt adapt to their system which only a select few seem to be capable.
Traditionally van Gaal has utilised a three man midfield: A holding player, a box-to-box player, and a playmaker. I'm assuming one of Mata, Kagawa, or Rooney is to be deployed as the playmaker, much like van der Vaart or Sneijder for the Netherlands. This leaves two remaining places, the holding player and the box-to-box player, neither of which Fabregas has been deployed as the past three or four seasons.
Yeah he did well and he could probably still do well in that role but he hasn't played in that role in years and he is probably better suited to that attacking point in a 3 man midfield which we have Mata for.
Either way I suspect the main reason he isn't a Manchester United player is because he doesn't want to be.
