Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

Despite Van Gaal supposedly saying otherwise, I can still see Fabregas at united.

This is closest to the truth... 'Catalan language paper L’Esportiu also report that Darren Dein has met with Arsene Wenger in recent weeks, but highlight the stumbling block of Barcelona being unwilling to release the player for anything less than €40m, a price Arsenal won’t match'... (buyback is 36 euros).

Last 24 hours Arsenal are not interested but are preparing a bid, city are leading the chase, he has agreed terms with Chelsea, we are not interested but have made a bid and Liverpool want him! Safe to say no one has a clue.

Great, now for us to swoop in paying the asking price

Yep, the newspapers know he's the pre World Cup transfer story, and they'll squeeze every ounce of publicity and gullibility out of it.

Agreed.

I hope we make a move but will understand if we don't. Really we don't need him unless he is coming in to take Arteta's position. But this will marginalize Ramsey somewhat, unless Fabregas is instructed to sit deep constantly - which I don't mind as there is no one better at playing passes around than him. But can he cope defensively?

I know he was brought through the youth ranks at Barcelona as a deep-lying mid (ala his hero Guardiola). But it's been many years since he has played there, the last being his break-through years with us.

No way he would play as a false 9 too. I would be well pissed if that was our plan for him.

Meanwhile he doesn't take Ozil's position, who has struck up a great understanding with Ramsey, and what looked like an exciting one with Walcott the few times they played together. Bring some pace into the side and look at counter-attacking more than a possession based game and we will look very dangerous.

If we could bring in some pace out wide and up front it could all work... That is where we need attention. For our midfield though, we realistically we need a DM and not another playmaker. Ramsey, Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere and Rosicky can provide the spark.

Is this the same as when FSG 'ignored' Suarez's clause? If there's a buy back clause surely that's the price, end of story?

Delusion 101: Find a report which is closest to your thinking, present it as the closest to the truth.

Parody.

No that's the max you'd pay, if there are no other bids then you lowball them.

Starting to feel a bit sorry for Francesc. Get's his dream move to Barcelona, and after 3 seasons, where he very rarely got to play in his natural position, they want to get rid of him. Now it seems no one wants him.

I agree. The guy only had a 'poor' return of 42 goals and 36 assists in about 125 apps. Terrible ;)

Could you imagine if Barcelona took a look at our midfielders!

I know LVG apparently doesn't want him and half the people on here think he would cause problems for Mata and Rooney, which I do not agree with in the slightest if anybody actually watches Barcelona, but I really hope he stays in Spain because all we need are teams that are already a lot stronger than ours improving even further by signing him.

Lets hope LVG has a really big midfield target up his sleeve - as the ones we are again apparently not interested in would all improve us greatly.

Good post, makes sense to me, can't understand why Wenger isn't trying to get Hernandez to be honest, would you take Song back as the DM?

In my mind it seems a little strange that he would go to work under Mourinho. I thought that all Barca players over the last few years had it drummed into them that he is pretty much footballs version of the Anti-Christ and as such, should be avoided at all costs. Guess not eh...

Agreed. I think united is his most likely destination if he comes to England. I don't completely believe Van Gaal saying he doesn't wand Fabregas.

LVG could be playing hard ball to smoke out other bidders or force Barcelona's hand but I wonder if fabregas just doesn;t suit the system LVG has in mind. He's not creating a team from scratch, he needs to buy players that compliment what he has already so that the players he has will be used to the best of their potential.

If buying Fabregas means operating a midfield formation that doesn't suit Mata or Kagawa then it wouldn't make sense to buy Fabregas no matter how good he is.

Has Van Gaal actually even said that? Seems like the suggestion that Van Gaal doesnt want him is just speculation.

Unless he's got the mind of a child I suspect he'll make his own decisions based on what's best for him. Players go where the money and chance of success is - and at Chelsea, to be fair he would have both. They're professionals at the end of the day.

Hed also have that at United, City and Arsenal.

True, true. Always the lure of living in London as well I suppose although I'm not sure Jose's band of football is the most endearing. The inevitable Arsenal meltdown if he joins the Chavs would be quite something I suppose.

I'm only going on what's been speculated. I can see Van Gaal going after good players who won't take long to grasp his methods.

If Van Gaal likes a 4-3-3, then surely one of those has to be a creative force, something we currently lack.

I would be surprised if we are not atleast a little interested, but then maybe he has his own different targets in mind.

Surely LVG had a set plan to bring in X amount of players that he thought were available but any manager of a top club has to show interest when a world class talent becomes available. Also for those who are saying he'd cause a problem, just stick Fabregas into our starting line ups last year with either Fellaini or Carrick and we would've got better results in games we dropped points in not to mention we'd have scored more goals.

World class talent, PL proven, good age, creates and scores goals from midfield something we've been lacking since Scholes. Why wouldn't we be in for him?

Indeed he would - but suggestions that he won't go to Chelsea, (if Chelsea represent the best option) just because of some loyalty to Barca - the team shunting him out of the door, are bizarre.

The inner child says Mourinho dumped a flair player like Mata, slagged off Hazard and turned Willian into a runabout.

If he plans (and thats a big If) on 4-3-3, then Mata/Kagawa would be used as the creative force.

LVGs opinion of a 4-3-3 is a single pivot with 2 attacking players. So he may plan on playing 2 of Rooney, Kagawa, Mata in these positions with a new signing as the holding player. Problem is he believes Strootman to be the best in that position and he's not fit till the new year.

As for signings, that would mean he is looking at a centre half and potentially 2 wingers.

Fwiw, i dont think he is certain to play 4-3-3.

I think he'll go to Chelsea. Just don't think Arsenal need him any more and van Gaal may have other players in mind. Seems the perfect Lampard replacement.

I'm really looking forward to seeing who these "other targets" LVG has if he really isn't interesting in Cesc and Kroos.. god they must be good.
Plenty on here have said we don't need any new players. We just needed a new manager, and that will be enough to ensure top 4 place. So no need to stress out :)

I posted in the Twitter thread but unless we werent interested which could be the case and we missed out on him because Woodward was dithering then we should be very very worried. Its been less than 24 hours since he was first linked and this news is coming from Spain...utterly embarrassing and I have no hope what so ever in the window, might as well be last summer.....that is of course if it is true, and we were interested.
