Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

I have not said they are more attractive than us, just that they should not be arrogantly dismissed as some club like Everton or Spurs. If Fergie was here it wouldn't even be a debate but we were very badly damaged last year in pretty much every way possible.

Yep, I'd agree with your assessment. One shit season doesn't suddenly mean we can't sign good players, or that all good players will automatically go to Liverpool, but people have to accept that CL football is a major incentive and that some players may be tempted to pick Liverpool ahead of us at the moment. If they're interested in Fabregas, then unless he completely has his mind set then they're well in the race for him.

Where do you even get this from? Your arse I imagine?

If I had to bet on United or Liverpool signing him, I would bet on Liverpool. I don't think Fabregas likes us at all.

He's an Arsenal player as far as I am concerned. I don't see him signing anywhere else.

Hopefully Van Gaal can be a pull so. He did help create the current batch of Barca graduates, Xavi & Iniesta speak very highly of Louis anyway. I'll be suprised if we get Fabregas though.

Watch Pep snake in and take him off to Bayern now...

Arsene Wenger has more pull than anyone as far as Cesc is concerned.

There's no chance he's off to Arsenal. they don't need him and wont throw £30m away like that when they need a top class striker and right back at the very least this summer.

On him not liking United.

Cesc is looking forward to his trip to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has admitted he is a huge admirer of Manchester United as he prepares to face Sir Alex Ferguson's men in the Champions League in midweek.

The young Gunner has enjoyed a fierce rivalry with the Red Devils during his time in north London and will renew hostilities on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

However, speaking to the News of the World ahead of the game, the Spaniard revealed the enormous amount of respect he has for the reigning European champions.

“I'm a massive Man United fan,” explained the 21-year-old.

“I have no problem saying United are one of the best clubs in the world - even though I want to beat them.

“They are the best side in the world at the moment - a top, top side and we respect them a lot.”

The midfielder also took time out to praise United stars Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he clearly expects to be the main danger men for the Red Devils.

“Rooney and Ronaldo are amazing. I really and admire them for what they do,” he added.

“I am a big fan of both of them. You can expect just about anything from them and they always make a difference in games. Look at Ronaldo against Porto - what a goal! It was one of the best goals I've seen.”

Yet despite his words of praise for Wednesday’s opponents, Fabregas also made it clear that he was confident his Arsenal side could knock United out of the Champions League.

“United are probably our biggest rivals but they are a team who play good football,” he added.

“At least we know we can beat them as we proved at The Emirates. They had their best players in the game earlier in the season and we won. That gives us tremendous confidence.”

Should Arsenal prevail, they will book themselves a date in the final against either Chelsea or Barcelona, and Fabregas confessed that this was his side’s priority now.

“We know the Champions League is now the main target for us,” he said.

“We're determined to go one better than against Barcelona in 2006 and win it in Rome.”

Are "various quotes" as reliable as "ask anyone" or "they reckon..." or is it along the lines of "I heard..." ?

If he loved us so much he would be pushing for a move right now. Those quotes don't mean anything.

He will not sign for us. And it won't be because we didn't try or offered enough money, it will be because he doesn't want to play here.

Where would he play at Arsenal? I cant see him fitting in a team with Wilshere, Ramsey, Ozil and Cazorla.

I suspect in 48 hours we'll be told how he's always spoken highly of Everton...

Bit dismissive don't you think? Whether he signs for us or not i think it's a bit daft to just disregard them seeing as we have nothing concrete to go on. Has he said anything to the contrary?

Liverpool 'leading the chase' to sign Cesc story on the Daily Mail's website looking less believable:

Do you know him, or something? You seem to know him better than anyone here, by the looks of it. For you to suggest he absolutely "doesn't want to play here" must mean you have had a conversation with him.

Liverpool's more likely than United - he's always admired the club.
He's also said he was a fan of United in the 2008/2009 season after we put you out of the Champions League.

So is Wenger's, isn't it? Fabregas was excellent in Wenger's system at Arsenal.

I see what you are saying. But I will be honest and say that I haven't watched Van Gaal's teams enough to decide if Van Gaal plays possession football more than Wenger. I rate Kroos higher than Fabregas in both possession and creative playmaking wise. And Van Gaal refused Kroos. Maybe Fabregas has something which Kroos doesn't have and what Van Gaal wants. And that is what I want to know. I asked just that in my earlier post. :)

From what I have seen of Fabregas at Arsenal, he was given quite a lot of freedom by Wenger to express creatively. He always had someone to put in the hard shift for him. afaik, Van Gaal doesn't give any of his players that freedom. So does Fabregas fit into Van Gaal's ideas in any way?

United has been chasing him for 2 transfer windows and he has never hinted a bit of interest of ever playing for us. That is more telling that a bunch of meaningless quotes from years ago.

He will choose another club.

I don't really see how United's 5 other average CMs will be a massive pull to Fabregas, to be honest. Top players want to be accompanied by players on their level.

Why is that such a surprise. They have Champions League football, are a big club, need a CM to replace gerrard, are looking for world class talent and £30 million they can afford. Makes sense that they would be interested in Fabregas.

I'm sure it's more sense for us than Liverpool. At the moment we have more money than Liverpool, we have a better quality manager in term of reputation than Liverpool, we have more players who can attract Cesc like RVP, Mata, De Gea than Liverpool. And we are still a big club. One bad season won't change it. If Arsenal is the most favor one and followed by us and Chelsea or even City then I don't see Liverpool to be able to compete to sign Cesc.

They threw in excess of £40m for Ozil last year when they still had problems in attack, there's every chance they'll throw £30m at him even if it means leaving problems in another part of the team.

He would have players infront of him on his level in Mata, RVP, Rooney etc. He also might see our midfield and think he's getting a game every week. Which he would do.

By chasing i assume you mean bidding for him twice last summer when he still believed he had a future at the Nou Camp? We were always going to lose out in a choice between us and Barca in his eyes, that's not the discussion here. Us or Arsenal is what we're debating. It appears he's leaving. Those quotes seem fairly relevant when speculating on possible destinations, combined with the fact we have no other capable midfielders and he'd be a starter.

I don't think Cesc is a guy who worries massively about getting a game every week. He's far more likely to worry about playing 4-4-2 with Darren Fletcher.

But seriously - he's got everything there for him at Arsenal. Great players, great city, great manager who he loves.

He's most likely not going to choose us though. I can see He picks Arsenal or even Chelsea.
But one thing for sure we are still ahead of Liverpool to sign Cesc.

Fans pressure was immense last year though, they needed a signing and now they have a cup. Id be amazed if Wenger decided to go for Cesc at the moment when he needs to strengthen in other area's but I could be wrong, if they were in for him then surely they're favourites.

So if we don't sign Fabregas, and he ends up at Arsenal for example, we'll have fecked up?

Woodward to blame, by any chance?

Depends on the situation, if it's a straight up choice between us and Arsenal and he picks Arsenal and was never interested in us then no we haven't failed. But if it's a case of he was interested and we take too long and he goes somewhere else and we don't manage to bring in a better option, then yes we've failed.
