What I'm going on is basically every media report from the sale in 2011. It could be rubbish, but seems unlikely given Wenger obviously delayed the deal in order to insert the clause.

Yes, I have heard about it, but as you say, it may not be true at all. Even if it is, it would mean that Arsenal will have to step in with the 25m pounds, and also offer Cesc wages, etc, etc... It would be strange if true. Barcelona would not consider selling him if it would be so easy for Arsenal to derail the deal.

You literally don't need either. Football is simple. You need 11 men who compliment each other well who go out there and do better than the others.

Sunderland's survival fight was led by Cattermole but so was their gradual descent to the bottom of the league. They're 16th.

You don't need a "fighter" you don't need a team of tiki taka experts. You need 11 great players set up well.
For 'fight' read spirit. If I was to say United have completely lacked spirit, to either take the lead or come back from conceded goals, that is what I'm getting at. With respect, you seem to suggest that 11 robotic automatons are required. I don't recall any successful United sides, coming from that mould.

;)

Well we certainly showed the spirit last year. When we come from behind a record number of times.

I don't know how you can judge "spirit". We don't know enough about the players to base anything on their amount of spirit.

It'd be £25m for us - that's the buy-back clause.

Even so, £25m on a player you only bid for because someone else wants him? It isn't happening. Else why wouldn't teams fake a bid all the time just to make Arsenal spunk money they had no intention of otherwise?

The thought of another former Arsenal player who might, just might actually wanting to join Manchester United must be hard to take for Arsenal fans. Bless them.

Would Cesc want to go there and ruin his ties with Arsenal completely to join a side not even in the Europa League?

It'd be brave.
I don't think players care as much as you think. Their career is more important than what fans think. Here is an interview with Ronaldo in the summer of 2011. If this happened he would have ruined his reputation with Madrid and united fans.

And Ronaldo confirmed that a return to the Premier League would certainly be on the cards were he to leave Madrid, appearing to disclose that he had been tempted by a big-money offer from Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.
"I think if I went from Spain it would be to the Premier League - but not now," Ronaldo was quoted as saying by the Sunday Mirror. "First we have to win the Champions League. If I went back to the Premier League it would have to be with a club in the north west. I don't like London.
"It's flattering to be offered like £20 million a year - it's very good, but I spoke to my agent and I think it's better to stay in Madrid because this year we're going to be the best. This season we are going to be a big force.
"Jose Mourhino is staying at Madrid so I stay. If he went to Chelsea then I would have left. I would have gone to Manchester City. But now he's staying, I'm staying."

You said it yourself, last year we had it, in bucket loads - this year, it's evaporated.

Plenty of interesting clauses in Fabregas' contract according to that telegraph article.

"Providing Fabregas wins one European Cup and two La Liga titles over the next five years, Arsenal will receive a further €6 million." - Arsenal fans must be gutted the way Barca's season has gone

I reckon we should put in a cheeky bid for Rooney to see if we can lure him with CL football.

I'm sure Wayne (who has played in more finals of the competition than Arsenal have won) won't bother about a season out of it I don't suppose.. not when he has a nice little wage every week as well.

That said, with the sulking and the "don't hire Van Gaal" stories in the papers I personally wouldn't care if he did leave.

There's your proof as to whether it was true or not.

He's well worth £45m. Brilliant, brilliant player in the right system. I'd love him at United.

I didn't know if they were a good source or not but since 2011 I was hearing persistent rumours about him thinking of going to city in other reports too. I will try to find them but its hard to find old interviews. In all honesty false source or not, It is hard to believe he wouldn't go there if the offer was right and if they could fulfil his ambitions.

It's more Barcelona being willing to sell if we are being honest. Cesc does not want to leave his current club.

Honestly, if Barca want to let him leave and we go in for him I dont see Wenger matching what we offer and face it the only reason Cesc would agree to leave Barca would be for the money
We have a buy-out clause - unless we choose not to exercise it, no deal can be done with another club. We will exercise it if he wants to leave Barca (still unlikely IMO). He's not coming to Man Utd, just forget it and chase Kroos or some other chimera.

Luis Enrique is the name doing the rounds I think

That disappoints me really. They need a rethink, someone from outside with a strong enough personality and name to change them. Not another Barcelona through and through kind of guy. He's done well with Celta this season but wasn't great at Roma.

What if Fab prefers joining Manchester over Arsenal?

I think some United fans are being incredibly cocky about just how much this season might impact them five years down the line.

You're going to have to throw more money around this summer than the Glazers have ever spent. And as MUST like to say, there's been a lack of investment since 2009.

Man Utd are in a post-Busby moment, all these blithe 'spend a few bob and it'll be alright' mantras discount how hard it is to make top 4 once you drop out
