@BarneyLFC that newbie who made a post of you was definitely right, you've had a bigger transformation than a transgender after this season.

I find it amazing that for the first time in premier league history, united fall out of the top 3 thanks to Moyes and opposition fans believe we've fallen off the wagon for good
I'd say the presumption that you'll walk straight back into contention is the more laughable.

Why haven't we bought him yet?

And as to people saying "we don't need him", I have only five words for you.

Anderson.
Tom Cleverley.
Marouanne Fellaini.

Now tell me we don't "need" Cesc Fabregas.
We neeeeeddd him baby, yeeaahhhh

I'd say the presumption that you'll walk straight back into contention is the more laughable.

Your team has consistently been doing no better than fourth. To presume that your fourth place trophy is so safe is even more laughable.

City - Don't think it's them unless Yaya is leaving.

Arsenal - With Ramsey, Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla, Ozil, Flamini, I can't see where Fabreagas would fit in. They need more of a defensive midfielder.

Chelsea - Doubt he'd want to play under Mourinho and one of Arsenal's London rivals.

Liverpool - They're getting Lallana.

Man Utd - :D

I don't get why people keep saying "I don't see where he'd fit in at Arsenal". It's Fabregas, one of the best midfielders in the world. He walks into almost any starting line up in football.

Would love us to get him and won't rule out anything after the Van Persie and Mata signings which were by far bigger shocks. Still think he's Arsenal through and through though and if he leaves Barcelona and returns to England it'll be them.

Of course there are no future guarantees.

I'm just one of those people who thinks there's more quality and potential in the squad than advertised. The underrating that goes on when it comes to some of our players is pathetic.

That said, we do need three or four choice additions.

I fully expect United to have a season next time similar to Liverpool this time - we'll have no CL distractions and it's going to allow us to properly prepare for each game.

The same way we feel our squad is brimming with potential is the same way Chelsea fans will feel, and Arsenal fans, and City, and Liverpool.
The past under Sir Alex has very little bearing on our future, in my opinion.

I'd never accuse people of overplaying our 'pull' as a club before. Because our continuity was unique, Sir Alex was head and shoulders above everyone, and his record indicated we'd win more than anyone else.
But right now we're not much different from City and Chelsea (and even Arsenal) in terms of what we can offer just by being Manchester United.

Cash in the bank never translates to transfer budget.

Arsenal will spend circa £40-£50m this summer.

I'm not saying a cash balance of £120m (will have since increased very significantly) is their transfer budget, but it should mean that £30m on Cesc does not have to negatively impact the hunt for a top striker.

He'll probably go to Arsenal, but this whole "United aren't a draw for players anymore" by opposition fans (and some of our own) is a bit overstated. We're a fecking massive club, whether anyone cares to admit it or not, and with a good manager (we now have one) and a few smart signings (we'll get them) we'll be right in the mix again.

Moyes legacy here is to cause all those who hate us to underestimate just what we are and what we're capable of. Will make it all the sweeter when we're back up challenging for all the major honours. Which will happen sooner than Arsenal, Liverpool and City fans seem to think.

Over £100M I'd say.

Fair play if you do. But we hear the same bluster from Arsenal each summer, and then you invariably spend considerably less than promised.

Looking objectively at your squad, I think you need a leading holding midfielder and a striker. You'll buy a right full back on the cheap. Don't see you needing £100m.

£100m is more the sort of sum United need to spend to get three or four starters in. And I don't think we'll even spend that much. Maybe £60-70m.

Preach!

Agreed.

Let's not forget that we signed Juan fecking Mata when we had David Moyes as our manager. Fabregas will go to Man City but oppo fans will have a rude shock next season.

Good post, expect the same.

What's laughable about it? Do you assume we're some no-mark club that can't compete for any player that will improve us? You've won one trophy in 9 (nine) fecking years. Away and billy big bollocks a Spurs forum or something, where you have some kind of higher ground to take. We were shit last year and still took 4 point off you lot.

It will impact their ability to get a top striker in if their total budget is £50m. The leading goal getters don't come cheap.

Yeah, what a load of bollocks right. I mean, City were managing to buy players on money alone. You can say that Mata was not wanted at Chelsea, but I'm sure he could have had his pick of clubs who were in a better position than us.

Agreed.

I'm not going to deny that you lot are not an attraction for top players, but Mata is a really bad example of that considering his circumstances at Chelsea.

I don't want him. I really want Arsenal to blow their budget on him and for them to end up signing someone like Remy instead of a top class striker. Fabregas is a great player, but this is one of the dumbest signings that Arsenal could make. Why stall Wilshere's and Ramsey's development?
It may stall the development of one of them (most likely wilshere) but they want to win trophies now and fabregas is a better player than both, comfortably I would say. He would be a good signing for any team.

We've got money to spend now (hence 50M euros on Ozil). Shopping list:

Cesc £30M
Aurier £10M
Benzema £40M
2nd keeper £10M
4th CB 10M
+ possibly Remy £10M

Arsenal won't spend £100m, but even if they did, it still wouldn't be enough for a striker, holding midfielder, right back, centre back and Fabregas.

God fecking damn it, even though I doubt that Fabregas will come here, watching Arsenal fans speak like they were overtaken by Ferguson and City owners themselves nowadays is just hilarious.

On top of that throw scousers and their 2nd place trophy in the mix and you've got an awful summer ahead.

I'm not going to deny that you lot are not an attraction for top players, but Mata is a really bad example of that considering his circumstances at Chelsea.
Why? He could have gone elsewhere. Do you reckon not another club would have been interested in signing a player of his quality? He was as available for everyone else as he was for us. If nobody else was interested, then why not? He's top quality and has been in his whole time in England.

He came because we're Manchester United, and we're still the top draw in the land whether you care to admit it or not. United are box office, always have been. That's why all you opposition fans are here.

Why is everyone underestimating after one bad season in 27 years? I'm not expecting us to win the title but I do expect us to make the Top 4 again. Even if we don't add to the squad I still expect a much better season. We have gone from from a manager who managed the likes of Preston and Everton to one who managed Ajax, Bayern and Barca and that'll make a huge difference

Arteta is a nailed on starter and at 32 isn't getting any younger, be a good time to replace him to be fair.

Pete has it spent and all. Just as easy as that.

Were any other big sides linked? I can only remember you and PSG.

Arse don't need him. Be a waste of most of their summer budget if they sign him back, and it will inevitably prove to be a poor decision when they still finish 4th.

Would love to sign him, would be a great addition. Offer £40 million and see what happens, I don't think Arsenal would spend that much on him.

They already wasted their whole budget on Ozil last summer when they needed a top class striker. Be funny to see them do it again.

Especially when you consider the £40m they spunked on Ozil for no apparent reason the season before. You buy players you need, not treat the transfer market like a housewife in Tesco who see's that a brand of cereals are on offer so "might as well".

IF Arsenal need Fabregas it's one thing but the interest seems to be nostalgia, and little else.

I don't think anyone is denying we're a huge club (clearly the biggest in the country), or that we have more prestige than Chelsea, City and Arsenal. But comments like "If Cesc wants to win trophies, he'd choose us" have very little base to them. Seeing as teams can spend what we spend, can offer the chance to work with managers just as appealing with similarly great philosophies. We all think our squad is capable of great things, but so do our rival fans.

A lot of what consistently made us the most likely team to win two or three titles in any given five year period has gone.
The continuity that would also appeal has gone.

This isn't to say we couldn't get Fabregas. But the gap in 'pull' is smaller between us and Arsenal,Chelsea and City, regardless of the money on the table. We aren't going to sway players who have tons of options just because we're United any more. It'll need more than that now.

And Mata was a unique situation. We're (and the Premier League is) still a much bigger draw than any French club (for non-French players), unless they offer double our wages.
It seems we'd been working on the deal for him a while, and there weren't many (if any) clubs near our level reported to be seriously in for him.

Obviously some will disagree with my view though.

Fabregas is not comfortably a better player than the Ramsey of this season. Would upgrading Ramsey to Fabregas make a bigger difference than replacing Giroud with someone like Cavani?

Guess what people, Arsenal has money to spend!

(where have I heard that before..)

The difference is this year we have a new Puma sponsorship deal which I believe is one of the biggest deals to ever have happened! In other years it hasn't been too clear whether we have had the funds that the board has made out. This year we have and we all know it!
